First Boeing 787 Roll-Out Today - Webcast
« on: 07/08/2007 09:27 pm »
OK, so it's not space, but it is aerospace, and a pretty big event.  Boeing will be doing a webcast of the rollout today at 6:30 pm ET.

It's sort of space related, 787 derived avionics are going into the CEV.  OK, that's a stretch.  Anyway, I'll be watching.

It will be great machine (I hope). Our prime airlines (LOT Polish Airlines *) are going to buy 15 "Dreamliners" - eight 787-8 and seven 787-9. They will be used for intercontinental flights, and they will replace our 767s, but I'm not sure about this - our 767s aren't much old, but I don't know how long is their lifetime - maybe they will be still in service.

* - "lot" means "flight" in polish language. ;) But some koreans after their arrival at Warsaw Okecie Intl Airport (my uncle was doing some electronics-related business with them) said that "LOT" means "Lot Of Traffic" ;)

The 767 will be old when 787 shows up in service.
Problem with "old" planes is not their lifetime (they can last quite a while if they are serviced well) but generally that older planes are more expensive to service and operate and the whole point of the 787 is to have an edge in that area.

Actually, after 30 years Boeing seems to turn the game around and beat Airbus where Airbus' original strength came from: Efficiency and meeting customers' requirements...

Funny, you see this up-and down scheme a lot in different industries... Companies obviously have to come under serious pressure do evolve.

I agree that it's a big stretch to make this at all relevant to this site, but we'll allow it as a one-off seen as we have so many pilots on the site.

The video feed for direct Windows Media Player use (see "Webcast Tips" on Premiere page) is already showing some video. And it looks like they have some problems with audio ;)

Try this: Click "Webcast Tips" at Premiere website, then click "English", or other language.

EDIT: Hmm... Now I haven't got audio at the webcast.

Boeing's concepts for the interior are beautiful.  Unfortunately, I think the interior design is ultimately up to the Airlines, who have a trend of sacrificing style for passenger numbers.

I know why it *can* have more dihedral, just wondering why it was designed to have more?  Plus, Carbon is stiffer than Aluminum by a factor of 3-5.

In the case of the 777, wasn't the reason for the large dihedral angle as simple as providing clearance for its large engines?  I'm sure there's more to it, though, and I'll defer to someone more knowledgeable in aerodynamics.

Best place to go to if you want to talk about the 787 (or, any other aircraft - especially commerical - for that matter) is at the airliners.net website... I'm a very frequent visitor there, too.

I'm thinking you're right.  High engine efficiency demands large engine diameters which means low clearance on low-wing aircraft.  Low-drag requirements lead to thin, flexible wings.  Combine the two and you get images like this one:

Well, to makes this thread a little space friendly...has the creation of the 787 proven that space vehicles or rockets made of composites can be feasible?

No, dihedral is a roll stability thing.  Engine clearance mostly dictates length of the landing gear.  Sometimes it can size the rudder due to the need to land one-engine-inop.
...
Gerbils working.  I think it has more dihedral on the ground because composites ARE stiffer.  Ergo, in flight, under load, they are bent the same as metal would be.  So
ground dihedral w/composite > ground dihedral w/metal
airborne dihedrals = same
Check it at first flight.
If I like something on NSF, it's probably because I know it to be accurate.  Every once in a while, it's just something I agree with.  Facts generally receive the former.

I know both dihedral and sweep add roll stability, but I'd think a plane like that wouldn't need much, especially when looking at its predecessors that seem to have much less.

I don't remember 737s, 757s, and 767s looking like that in-flight artist's drawing I posted.  The 777 is closer in flight, but the wings are very flexible by comparison.

Making the landing gear taller can be a pretty big mass hit.  They flattened the bottom of the 737 cowlings rather than redesigning the gear for the higher-bypass engines.
