Flight Director update. I think he sounds just like Ross from Friends  ;)
Edit: Extra comedic value when he said "...take your clothes off..." when describing the leakcheck procedure.

CNN

Q: What has the mission been like so far?

Lindsay: Fantastic, accomplished most of the major objectives and got some extra get aheads done on the EVA. Installed last US pressurised module

Q: Eric what will you be thinking at wheel stop?

A: Be glad to be back on earth, will be bitter sweet, discovery looks like shes flying her first flight

Q: Alvin what was the message in a bottle?

A: JAXA wanted to capture a bit of outer space to put on display

ATTG TV

Q:  What are you doing today?

A: Nicole: Today were at the point where we’ve finished robotics and space walks. Doing transfers and taking time to look out the copula

Q:  Anything Alvin wants to pass along to people in the Washington area?

A: Looks frosty down there hope you’re bundled up

Q: How do you tell time?

A: Alvin: Have very little idea what time it is up here, have three watches to keep track of MET, GMT and Houston time

Q: Is this a bitter sweet moment being the last flight for discovery

A: Lindsay: still two flights left of the shuttles, sad to see the shuttle program end. They have a great service record look forward to seeing them retire with dignity and the next space ship

WTSP TV

Q: Nicole: If you could bring back one experience and share it what would it be?

A: A combination of that we should look at the ISS as a true example of what we can do as an international community. ISS is complex and we came together to build it beautifully. You can’t leave here without appreciating what a wonderful planet we have.

Q: Can you describe what its like to look down at Tampa Bay? Do you look at google maps and think this isn’t as good as my view

A:  Nicole: Google maps doesn’t compare, feel a fondness for Tampa Bay every where you look its clear and colourful and glowing. Pictures don’t really capture it, you can’t describe unless you see it

Q: What do you do with free time in space?

A: Take pictures, look at the planet at night turn down the lights and look at the night sky. Like to look at meteorites. Talk to other crew mates

Q: Steve: You’ve been Nicoles boss twice now what is it that makes Nicole so exceptional?

A: Can’t say enough good words about her blessed to be working with her. Known her for years assigned her to ISS stay. Nicole and everyone on the crew do everything really well

Q: Who is the prankster on the crew?

A: Several comedians on the crew Steve and Eric are the biggest

Q: Nicole, Do you talk to your son often?

A: Talk to him once a day works out well

Q: Nicole, What do you want to say to people back on the ground?

A: Thank you its heart warming to see how people follow my missions

Q: Nicole, how does it feel to be on Discoverys last mission?

A: Strikes me very much, talk about it a lot with the crew its bitter sad. Need to look at positives and the successes of Discovery.

KNBC TV

Q: How are you feeling with the days winding down?

A: Steven Lindsay: Bittersweet moment, enjoying the flight. Privilege to be on the last flight of Discovery.

Q:  Alvin what’s it like to do a space walk?

A: 43 years ago I talked to my dad as Apollo 11 crew walked on the moon asked my dad how much you have to pay to do that, and couldn’t believe they got paid to do it. Now I can’t believe they pay me to do a space walk

Q: Alvin, What goes through your mind?

A: View is spectacular

Yep, this sounds live.

Notes Nicole's hair in micro G.

Nicole: I try to keep mine refined. Fun to let it flop around, but it'll get you into trouble with velcro.

About Discovery's mileage.

Mike: Discovery's at the top of her game and viciously defended by her ground crew and she's pristine (nice one Mike!!)

Eric - she's a great machine, to be she looks brand new. The KSC team maintain her as a perfect vehicle. Bitter sweet moment when we put her on deck at KSC.

Very, very good :)

WXIA TV

Fluffy stuff about wanting to be an astro. Sounds like Eric's local station.

Eric: I really enjoy being a fighter pilot. I flew F4 and F15C.

Last flight for Discovery.

Eric: We're all honored and privilaged to fly Discovery on her final mission. She's a great machine.

On the future:

Eric: If I'm lucky enough I'll get to pilot another vehicle. Test pilots should still go into the astro program. Every shuttle flight is a test flight, so the new vehicles will be too.

Benefits of the space program.

Eric: All sorts of techs come out of the program. The ISS is a national facility. The small computers and miniturization all came through the space program.

What's Eric like to work with?

Mike: We have a crew of six amature comedians, but two stick out and Eric is one of them. He has a teachers hand and if he can take a doctor like me to fly supersonic jets....he's always all over the flight plan.

Nicole: We were part of the same astro class. We were called the Bugs and we've spent a long time training together. It's a real joy to fly with people like Eric. Flying with Eric both in plans and shuttles has been a real joy. Out of nowhere he'll make you crack up.

About speaking to the President.

Eric: Expect he'll talk about the path forward after shuttle.

That was good too.

Fox News radio:

How's the mission going so far.

Mike: Mission has been going great. We're on FD8 - a lot of the hard stuff is behind us. Working on transfers.

On Discovery.

Eric: She is has a lot of miles left in her, but this is the time to carry out the plan from five years ago. It's about time to move on to the future vehicle.

How is she performing?

Eric: She looks brand new, she looks like she's on her first flight. Testiment to the ground crew.

Nicole on the size of the ISS: It's much bigger. Cupola was something I was looking forward too. It's a positive addition and provides us opportunities to do robotics and appreciate our beautiful planet.

Mike on Cupola.

Mike: We're all wired to appreciate beauty. You can be ovewhelmed at the planet. The view is absolutely magnificant. Also really helps us with robotics, to be able to see payloads directly.

Discovery again, for all three.

Nicole: Eric said it very correctly. It really is an honor and privilage to fly with Discovery at any time, but this final flight stands out. It's a time to celebrate her fine history. Done everything from deloying satellites, orbiting lab and contributing to the flights for the ISS. When we walk away from her on the runway there will be tears. I worked with her at KSC and it was a real privilage.

Mike: There's been lots of ships of Discovery, a rich legacy in the name Discovery. To be able to take the final flight of this Discovery is a real privilage. She's set the goals high for the next Discovery.

Eric: For me after we do the walkaround there will be a tear come to the eye, one of pride. The people behind the ships that make the difference, and they are the ones which make Discovery a great machine.

Awesome comments!

Hot tip of the day:  pay close attention on passes within a day of docking or undocking, and you (usually*) get to see orbital formation flying!
Very rare are these events (especially with clear skies), and oh, so cool...

*We saw ISS pass about 14 hours prior to docking, and did NOT see Discovery.  This is because they did a large burn about 8 hours prior to docking and raised Discovery's orbit by about 100 miles (not sure if it was related to launching so late in the window)!

Oh my god! just saw the International Space station and the docked Space shuttle Discovery came over our house. AMAZING! Finally saw it.

And this means that Discovery will land having spent exactly 365days (or exactly one calendar year) in space over her 39 mission career. Amazing!

Not sure if someone has mentioned it already, but the fact they've added TWO days to the mission speaks volumes about the capability of the orbiters in general, and Discovery in particular.  Remember, they pulled one set of PRSD tanks from Discovery to maximize upmass over the summer (still remember that great article, ChrisG!)...

Most of it...

"Hello everybody".

"Welcome onboard the ISS" - Commander Kelly.

"Is that Scott? How are you my friend."

"Very well Mr President"

"We're always inspired by your work as you make ISS operational. You make us all proud of your courage.

"Must be proud to be the last commander of Discovery (to Commander Lindsey).

Called Discovery an "it" - outrage! ;)

"On behalf of the crew it's a real honor to fly with HER. We think Discovery will have flown in space for a full year. She's been into space 38-39 times and she won't be forgotten" - Commander Lindsey.

"Full 12 astronauts and cosmonauts. Every vehicle from the ISS partners. That's a pretty good metophore for how we work in space and back on Earth."

"That you for that sir and you're right. It is a testomony to international partnerships. All these countries came together and everything fit first time."

On R2.

"We just pulled him out of the PMM. And he's off camera, still being unpacked. It'll be fun to see him work.

President "Come on, still unpacking him man?"

Commander Lindsey "Every now and again we hear scratching sounds and "let me out!"" :D

"I just want to congratulate everyone who works at NASA and works on Discovery. We could not be more proud."

"Hope you get back safe and sound".

Over.

He'll of been briefed, clearly - but I thought it was very good, and he got across some important facts, some good lead ins for the commanders to do the same.

I liked it - apart from the President calling Discovery an it - but Commander Lindsey's been great in paying her tribute.

As always it's not word for word transcription (especially as NTV keeps cutting out on VLC).

FD Royce Renfrew: A lot happening today, announced mission extension. 13+0 mission.

Looked at the cryo on Discovery. Have four SSPTS. 21 hour above the 13+0 mission and will still transfer some O2 to ISS.

73 percent complete as an average of transfer activities.

Crew was on a half day off. Russian CO2 scrubber working. Node 3 CDRA installed the new bed. Up and running. Expect it to be operational around an hour from now.

Call from the President was very nice. Had some kind words to say to the crew.

FD9 - back into the PMM. Have cleared out the aisle way, some stowage back to the bungle jail. Will work on the racks next. Clean out a place to move Express Rank 8, after cleaning out a space in the lab.

Robert asking about the PMM status after undock.

Mr Renfrew: About six hours short on completing all activites before we release HTV. After Discovery undocks, there will still be some work to do.

On R2/Obama

Mr Renfrew: Currently not in the docked timeline (for bringing out R2). Will be probably during the stage.

Denise on extension helping 134/135

Mr Renfrew - all of the work the crew need to do for 134, will offload from the work on the increment. A lot of work over a short time with all the visiting vehicles.

Marcia on R2 unpacking.

Mr Renfrew - Not sure when we're due to unpack R2 (the actual date). All R2 work from 133 is done.

Charles has a bad comm line again - Mr Renfrew resists :)
Was about normal EOM timelines. Can come home as late as Friday EOM+2

On OTV-2.

Mr Renfrew - NASA's had conversations with the USAF on the range for Discovery going up and down.

Robert on extension relating to food on Station.

Mr Renfrew - One of the things we did on 133 was to work via ISS supplies. Balance on ISS stores can easily accommodate for the extension.

Over.

So, we're getting into rack moves (which Chris knows I love)! ;D

A full overview of PMM rack moves was detailed in my article "International Resupply Vehicles Impact ISS On-Orbit Stowage".
http://www.nasaspaceflight.com/2011/02/international-resupply-vehicles-impact-iss-stowage

As a summary, PMM rack moves are as follows (in order):

• ZSR at LAB1P1 > PMM1P1 (completed yesterday).
• ZSR at PMM1S3 > PMM1P2.
• ER-8 at PMM1S2 > LAB1P4.
• ZSR at PMM1S4 > PMM1S3.
• ZSR at PMM1S1 > COL1F2.
• 2x RSPs in PMM > HTV2F1 & HTV2A1.
• 2x ISPs in PMM > HTV2S1 & HTV2P2.

It is unlikely that the STS-133 crew will perform all of these rack moves, however (some will be completed by the increment crew post-133).

Updated NTV schedule for FD9.

Remember, running order for the big events tomorrow are

FD9 wake up at 03:23am Central....and throughout the day.

Glory launch at 04:09am Central:
ARTICLE:
http://www.nasaspaceflight.com/2011/03/live-orbital-taurus-glory-with-nasa-satellite/

LIVE:

And the Atlas V with OTV-2 launch at 2:39pm Central:
ARTICLE:
Friday.

LIVE: http://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=23962.0

Big picture plan:

Given we've already pre-empted the second mission extension day (and only had to update with positive result) I want to beef up my next 133 article - which I've been working on for the last hour or so - with a bit more with lovely vehicle status (she's performing so well I don't have a whole lot to write about :D)

Want to see if SSP held a standup today and then we'll meat it up with what the big bosses are saying about the mission.

Chris G will be writing up the excellent ascent report from MER (L2) at the weekend and I'll of checked into the potential slip for 134/review her VAB flow for another article. Then we're into preps for undocking.

Don't forget, if you're new, feel free to catch up via our pre-launch flow and mission coverage via here:

http://www.nasaspaceflight.com/tag/sts-133/ - we're up to about 115 articles now.

Hmm, it's not like some of the previous events, where kids sent videos asking questions. It's blog questions, read out by someone who works on a NASA education site.

Funny moment was when she asked about the benefits of social media (her job) and Steve Bowen had a bit of a dig about Twitter :)

Still good questions. John44 will have the video.

No kids asking questions, it's just someone reading out questions and they seem to be scripted, rather than ones that comes from kids.

They'll of come from all ages. Doesn't matter anyway, so long as the video gets into schools etc. Every little bit helps.

But of course it's much more fun if a kid can go home and tell the parents the she/he talked one-to-one with an astronaut :-) but better than nothing, true.

More info on the alarm from Josh.

One sensor was inhibited because it had tripped before because of dust. The Russians had rebooted some systems, so that sensor turned back on and tripped the alarm one more time.

Sensor is re-inhibited.

Have to step out and do day job things for a couple of hours, so anyone is welcome to keep a check on things, add some screenshots etc.

All PMM Outfitting over this time period.

Per today's Execute Package, the following rack moves will be performed today (in order):

Note: For all ZSR relocations, the ZSR's "tent-like" structure will be deployed as part of the relocation procedure.

• Soft stowage at LAB1O5 > various locations.
• ZSR at PMM1S3 > PMM1P2.
• ZSR at LAB1P4 > LAB1O5.
• ER-8 at PMM1S3 > LAB1P4.
• ZSR at PMM1S4 > PMM1S3.
• ISP at PMM1F3 > PMM endcone.
• ISP at PMM1P3 > PMM endcone.

In addition, the following RSPs will be rotated down, allowing stowage to be removed from them:
• RSP at PMM1A1.
• RSP at PMM1A4 (will go to HTV-2 eventually).
• RSP at PMM1A2.

Following these rack moves, the only remaining rack moves will be:
• ZSR at PMM1S1 > COL1F2.
• 2x RSPs in PMM > HTV2F1 & HTV2A1.
• 2x ISPs in PMM endcone > HTV2S1 & HTV2P2.

Will note the interesting ones.

Robert on first on Discovery.

Commander Lindsey. There are times where I've reflected on it and what a wonderful vehicle where you can see Discovery on the wings and in the Payload Bay and recall all the things the vehicle has done.

Robert on cool views of Discovery during EVAs.

Al - Discovery filled our entire visor. Wonderful ship and a blessing to be part of Discovery's history.

More questions - won't know some of them.

Hometown questions for Steve Bowen - notes his pride in the crew.

Anadotes on Bowen.

Commander Lindsey: When Steve was taking the PM off the truss, he was being driven on the arm. When they they were flying him over the RWS crashed and he was stuck holding the payload. Crew did great work to get the back up going, but it gave us an opportunity to joke with him when he was stuck there with nowhere to go.

Mark on extention.

Commander Kelly. The original plan didn't have them working PMM too much. So it would have been a time crunch to outfit PMM to get foam into HTV-2. So we have two extra days of six people to get a lot of it done before they leave. Helps maximize our time.

Where Express Rank 8 is heading.

Moved it this morning, it's next to Steve Bowen, it is the last express rank.

Denise on Discovery flyaround

Eric Boe - it's a privilage to do an undock and flyaround with all the VVs on ISS. When we finish the flyaround it's amazing how big the vehicle is, how each piece was brought up by Shuttle.

Eric Berger on ISS complete/size.

Nicole: This is the largest pressurized volume in space, in history. You could spread all of us out all over the Station. It's the interior size of a 747.

Question on trash.

Commander Kelly - we recycle certain things, such as urine into water. Right now we don't have a whole lot of common trash (food and clothing), as we've had two Progress vehicles depart. 11-12 large garbage bags were removed. Certain areas in the node and Russian area for where it stays until we can dispose of it.

Marcia on R2.

Cady - we've all been voting to get him out of his box. We're sure we can hear scratching :D A lot of work to do, and we'll see if we can bring him out before 133 departs. Exicted about the prospect of working with him.

On Bowen's late catch up.

Steve - Am I pinching myself and there's no way I could make this up to Tim. If there's anything I can do for him I'm willing to discuss it.

Bill on Soyuz flyaround.

Alexander - Yes, we were ready, but now we have a no decision for this operation. Would have been unique. But unfortunately we don't do this.

Commander Kelly - would have been historic, but the risk is there. I didn't get to see the risks. I'm not sure why they decided no.

UK woman - woo....on astronomy.

Mike - well hello to the UK :) - your senses can be overwhelmed. We actually have a medallion for James Cook and the rich heritage of Discovery in the UK.

On inspiring future astros.

Commander Kelly. When the shuttle retires we'll still have a space station. We'll have a program beyond this. Don't know what it'll be, but we'll eventually head to other destinations.

James on ground crews when Discovery lands.

Nicole - it's going to be a sad day. We all appreciate the history and legacy of the space shuttle. Will be hard to walk away from this seemingly brand new vehicle to us for retirement. It seems there is just an abundant pride to work on these vehicles. It shines through in the state Discovery is in right now. In the end we'll be taking the time to celebrate it was a wonderful program.

Difference between Shuttle and Soyuz re-entry.

Mike - Soyuz was after six months flight. I'll probably look like the typical people coming down and we're seated upwards on shuttle, and the G is much less. 1.2 Gs will feel like 3 after being up here. For most part people do well.

ESA questions.

On international partners.

Commander Kelly - I think it's great. It's one of the biggest significant achievements. A real highlight of the program.

Paolo's getting a lot of questions in Italian :)

About six questions for him! At the end Paolo and Commander Lindsey both grinned at each other, as Paolo looked over the moon about the interest in him :)

I had to step out for a few minutes. Did anyone catch the answer to Cady's question about if the ZSR's are all the same? I would have assumed that they are, but am no longer so sure since they are supposed to move ZSR's out of some slots in the PMM only to go and put a different ZSR in the same slot.

All ZSRs are the same - they are standard racks. The reason for moving some ZSRs around inside the PMM is because they were mounted on top of other racks for launch, and now they must be assembled in their own rack bays.

Attached are images of the PMM's launch config vs. the on-orbit config. This is what the STS-133 crew have been working on today. Note that the two ISPs and two of the RSPs in the final config image will be going down on HTV-2.

These images are taken from a 70-page Increment 25 & 26 overview document, available to download in full on L2.

Thanks. So why do this sequence? why not do PMM1S4 > Pmm1P2?

• ZSR at PMM1S3 > PMM1P2.
• ZSR at PMM1S4 > PMM1S3.

Good catch - you just spotted an error on my part! :)

ER-8 is at PMMS3, not S2. My original post has been corrected.

Therefore, in answer to your question: A ZSR was installed on top of ER-8 at PMM1S3. That ZSR was relocated to PMM1P2 in order to clear the way for ER-8 to be relocated.

Once ER-8 had been relocated, the ZSR installed atop the RSR at PMM1S4 was moved into the empty bay at PMM1S3, in order to allow access to the RSR at PMM1S4.

http://www.spaceflight.nasa.gov/gallery/images/shuttle/sts-133/flightday07/ndxpage1.html

NASA images of this mission have so far been awful.

There were less than two pages of images released for FD-8. There was less than one page for FD-4.

ISS is currently in a unique configuration that we will never see again. Where are the images of ATV-2's interior? Where are the images of HTV-2's interior?

During Discovery's approach to the ISS on FD-3, just before sunset, the Shuttle crew would've had an amazing view of HTV-2 berthed to Node 2 Zenith (we all remember the amazing shots from STS-130). Where are those images?

During EVA-2, I watched on NASA TV as Steve Bowen photographed HTV-2 from the end of the SSRMS. Where are those images?

This unique moment in station history is going largely unseen by the public. Very very sad, and a tad annoying too, seems as US taxpayers have paid for these images that they never get to see. :(

Maybe the "general" public won't/don't, but us NASA fans do (at least I certainly do).

I've always wondered why NASA doesn't seem to be interested in catering for its biggest fans. I think the PAO who releases the images should at least have some technical knowledge of the ISS, so they they can recognise the significance of certain images (i.e. HTV on Node 2 Zenith).

There really should be someone at the PR dept. who has a photographic background (Is Mike Gentry still there?) to make a better selection - and more of them! This is a continuing frustration. The PAOs in recent years haven't had a technical background, and I don't think they appreciate how much the geek fans of NASA are a 'force multiplier' who go out into their communities and spread positive stories about NASA - when we are provided with the high quality (meaning detailed and technical) background info to let us do that.

(this is a generalization and obviously there are some really good people in the NASA system as well, but on average it's been hard to get good info out of NASA. Stupid overconservative interpretation of ITAR doesn't help either I suspect...)

Look at it a different way. This could easily be seen as overt political advocacy, which in the government is supposed to be a "bad thing"  ... even though it happens all the time with top level people with "foot in mouth" disease. Last thing a politico wants is to fund a public mouthpiece of some sort that might hypothetically be used against them ...

No - not ITAR.  It's just that the good ones find better things to do where they are appreciated more. Hiring is more focused on "safe" "dumb" types who are recognizable as "PR flack" types . And some "educators" sometimes.

I'm actually considering E-mailing the NASA PAO to raise these issues. Seems as my opinions seem to be shared by a few others on here, I wonder whether anyone else would be willing to do the same? Perhaps if enough people say the same thing, NASA will put more images online.

Spaceflight imagery is, I think, the single most important aspect of public outreach, as images/video are the only way that the public can experience what is going on up there. Text-based articles can give you info, but if no-one can see what's actually going on, then that's a big loss IMO. NASA doesn't seem to realise this, as they continue to hide images away on a site that is only known by a handful of people.

Sorry to go off topic - back to FD-9 coverage now. :)

I will 100% concur with that. There hasn't been any babbling of random, irrelevant facts on this mission. NTV PAOs have been excellent, and I've loved their tributes/nostalgic reflections on Discovery, which you can tell come from the heart.

Not sure about Mr. Gentry, but that department went through at least one layoff at the end of the last fiscal year (i.e., 30 Sept 2010).  (Technically, I believe the people there are contractors.  Or, well, were contractors.)

There are still people there, but fewer of them and probably not fewer "responsibilities."

Re: imagery, I'll check, but IIRC "PAO" is not specifically responsible for what gets published on spaceflight.nasa.gov.  (Be glad there was no gov't shutdown, BTW.)

But these questions might be a better topic for a mission-specific PAO thread...we've had several of these before.

I read in the ISS reports that Scott Kelly did a tour for the STS-133 crew prior to the mission, but I haven't seen it anywhere.

I remember Mike Fincke did one for the STS-119 crew back in 2009 (which NASA released), and it was very good as it was full of technical content.

Every ISS video tour I know of has been released, if not let me know when it happened and I'll see what I can get.

I read in the ISS reports that Scott Kelly did a tour for the STS-133 crew prior to the mission, but I haven't seen it anywhere.

I remember Mike Fincke did one for the STS-119 crew back in 2009 (which NASA released), and it was very good as it was full of technical content.

To me, the best video tour would be when they have finished unloading & transfering all the cargo from the VV & PMM. THEN we will see what the ISS truly looks like! (when it's all cleaned up)

Mr Renfrew - another great day on orbit. Getting the PMM squared away.

Transfers are 90 percent complete. In the PMM had a very successful day, getting the PMM into ease of usage. Removed a bunch of hardware. Express Rank 8 into the lab.

Spent some time playing with the Zero G stowage racks. One to go into Columbus. Little bit of stowage reconfig.

All in all a great day.

Spent some time in the airlock, getting the EMUs ready to transfer to Discovery. Putting the tools away and getting the airlock into nominal stage ops config.

Did some WVS troubleshooting.

Tomorrow is another busy day. Three major activities. 1) Continue in the PMM to get the last bit of launch hardware off the ranks.Time in HTV-2 removing food and transfer to PMM. Move some ballast around. Important to maintain center of gravity in the modules.

2) Node 3 installation of a remediation kit into the OGA. Hardware is a filter.

3) Lab CDRA. Had a failure during EVA-1. Root cause tracked to the heater pads - where a heating process cleans the CO2 by baking it. Mike did the same activity during his increment. Also is the same Environmental Control and Life Support System officer, so we've got the band back together :)

HTV-2 to be relocated on 10th. Release 28th from the Nadir Port. R2 won't come out until after relocate.

Mark on OGA.

Mr Renfrew - hasn't been working for a while. Been waiting for the remediation kit on 133. Haven't needed to use it as ATV-2 brought up a bunch of O2 tanks.

Mark on CDRA:

Each have two beds. Two strings of heaters on each bed. Lab CDRA only running with one bed. Work to find the short and get both stringers of the heater bed.

Philips on :) Asking about Russian CO2 scrubber.

Mr Renfrew - yes it just went down. Moscow not going to work on it until the morning to try and get it back up and running.

On O2 transfer.

Mr Renfrew - the ISS tanks will be near full (Little difficult to say). Pressure on the tanks relating to solar beta. Average it out. No exact number of lbs of O2. On the math from the Environmental Control and Life Support System, we'll leave the O2 tanks full when Discovery departs.

Robert on R2/134

Mr Renfrew - Relatively extensive process. Increase the tasks for R2. Once relocate HTV, set up, power up and MSFC will look at the telemetry. Can't focus how long that will go on before R2 moves. Long time to check out the system. Will have a breadboard to play with, moving sockets, and then increase the difficulty.

On ground command for R2.

The crew actually has the ability to operate onboard. Crew time is a resource we check out. Majority will be from the ground, then the crew will get involved. Majority from the ground.

Question to recap on OGS/OGA and R2

Mr Renfrew - Bringing home the hydrogen dome. Packing from PMM to Discovery middeck for the dome. Chemical imbalance in the dome root cause. Haven't operated it at max capacity as the chemicals need adjusting - which is what the redemiation kit is about. Hope to fire it up tomorrow.

R2 schedule is where we expected it to be. It's a science payload we want to get active. After 133 and HTV-2 relocate.

Marcia on R2 between 10th-28th?

Mr Renfrew - Correct. This crew is very fast, we're one step ahead of the crew, but I prefer being 10 steps ahead of the crew, so wouldn't be surprised to do it faster, but the schedule is between the 10th-28th.

Over.

Good article, Chris.  I'm in awe that any machine as complex as an orbiter could be working this well.  Let's hope it continues through wheel-stop.

When Discovery began suffering from launch delays, due to problems with her External Tank (ET-137), some people joked the orbiter had conspired with her problematic orange friend from New Orleans, in order to resist her impending retirement date. Ironically, Discovery’s superb performance on orbit has resulted in just that, with two additional docked days added by the Mission Management Team (MMT).

HA! That is a great paragraph in a technical article.

Thanks :)

Although it wasn't all that technical - compared to PRCB level content - lest we forget that troublesome ET-137. May its stringers rest in pieces at the bottom of the Indian Ocean.

Do you see what I did there? ;)

Quality article Chris.

I echo your sentiments there, above, after meeting quite a number of people who had gone to see her in November and experienced the many long and painful delays. One ET tank I was glad to have burn up!  LOL

It's a weekend in the US.

That's never been an issue on previous Shuttle missions.

I don't see how that's an issue anyway - if five images have been released, then it must mean that somebody is in the PAO office. So what's stopping them releasing more?

Discovery's final mission is going largely unseen by everyone who cares, and history is going unobserved. :(

Fear not, we've been kindly offered some help to at least make the situation better, per message in the other thread. Hopefully that will cause a chain reaction for additional help on that matter as we'd take whatever they have :)

I got impression that yesterday was kind of a slower day, or at least the evening. Still, I wouldn't argue with more pictures.

There was a lot of work going on in orbit in PMM but for us on the ground it might have seemed slow

Re: pictures again, what was the response when sending feedback to the email address provided at the bottom of the Photo Index pages?

And I'll note again there have been layoffs, so one shouldn't assume that staffing levels that applied in 2007, 2008, 2009, or 2010 still apply today.

Yeah, definitely speaking from a ground POV.

I know for a fact they are lower.

Re: pictures again, what was the response when sending feedback to the email address provided at the bottom of the Photo Index pages?

I haven't sent an E-mail yet, but I asked @BethBeck (SOMD Outreach Manager) about it via Twitter, and this was her response:

"Sometimes files are uploaded faster than others. Not sure why for this mission...."

You'd think the SOMD outreach manager would be more on the ball than that.

Definitely follow up on open lines of communication.  If Beth can help you, great.  The email is provided -- or perhaps was provided by people that are no longer employed -- for feedback on that specific subject.  It doesn't guarantee a response, but the more people that ask, the better.

yeah, that was a rather small set of images.
but to be fair, I don't believe there were even 2 dozen pics downlinked that day and those were the best of the lot. guess they were just too busy working to take any photos.

Actually I have noticed that some missions are better than others when it comes to photography. I don't know if it is just that some missions have crew members who are more photographically minded or whether it comes down to who is on duty at the PAO.

Lay-offs at the Photographic Unit started a while ago, before NASA started using digital. I was in regular correspondence with Debbie Dodds who was one of the contractors at the time and who put me on a list to automatically receive the press release photos and I remember her telling me that budget clampdowns meant folk were leaving. Then I think she left too.

After that NASA went digital and the photos were available electronically.
