Heat tile pizza oven
« on: 07/04/2025 04:45 pm »
Hi everyone,

Big fan here.  So I was wondering if I could recycle the heat shield tiles collected along the beach post RUD and use them to build a cool backyard pizza oven?

My pizzas don't reach atmospheric reentry temps.  I think it would look cool with a hell of a story.

Basically at 1,000 degrees or less is there any real toxic off gassing?  Could I get it up to temp a few times to season them and then start cooking?

Seems a waste to throw these insanely heat resistant things away.

Thanks

There's silicate fibers in it, it might lead to asbestosis if you use it in your backyard like that.

JIMO would have been the first proper spaceship.

You could line the inside of the oven, but you'd still have the seams to worry about. I put some over a motorcycle exhaust where the rider kept burning his leg once, but he vanished before I got photos.
The tiles are pretty fragile. I haven't seen the new ones, but you could just about poke your finger through the old ones.

The restaurant found one use for them.
(It was the high point of the meal. All the food was California fufu Wolfgang Puck kind of stuff)

Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.
