Will Juno discover Europa's Oceans?
« on: 09/10/2022 12:54 pm »
On the 29th of September Juno is going to flyby Europa.  While Juno wasn't designed with the Galilean moons in mind, its instrumentation is still more sophisticated that Galileo's was, and in particular the magnetometers and microwave radiometer might detect at least the shallower pockets of water.  It wouldn't create a subterranean map of Europa, but whatever hints past probes saw Juno ought to see more strongly; the abyssal plains of Europa would keep their silence, but a geyser-spouting lake would sing like a siren.

How strong do you suspect Juno's findings will be?

Will Juno discover Europa's Oceans?

Only if they exist.

Juno certainly should return dispositive evidence about Europa's oceans. The intended purpose of running experiments, since the Renaissance, has been to state falsifiable or verifiable or testable hypotheses, test them by some method, and conclude. Of course however, then reality smacks us in the face. For example, with the Mars Viking landers in 1975, to find life we had several clever instruments to detect metabolism, and GCMS, and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy but we reached limited conclusions. Likewise now, we'll get Black Swan events, we'll say 'gee that's funny', and discover something.
I'd rather be here now

At least with Europa we're asking a simpler question of "is there (liquid) water?" as opposed to "is there life?"  All the same, indeed there's a chance reality gives scientists with grandiose expectations unexpected results.

With the Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer having successfully launched last April and the Europa Clipper scheduled to launch next year, the Juno spacecraft might discover a possible ocean on Europa ahead of the arrival of the JUICE and Europa Clipper at the Galilean moon system.

The launch of Juice and pending launch of Europa Clipper has no bearing on when or whether Juno finds an ocean on Europa.
