Sierra Nevada Corp. will spin off its Space Systems division into an independent company, Sierra Space, over the next several months. It projects current revenues of $400M/yr to grow by 10x in the next 5-10 years.

Part of Sierra Nevada may be preparing to go SPAC. Worth noting that the projected revenues are largely based on securing future NASA contracts for Dream Chaser and habitats. Certainly no guarantee of that.

Offline TrevorMonty

SPAC if SS  is one way to obtain large funding need for orbital projects while keeping SNC 100% privately owned.

SNC doesn't necessarily need to give up DC and habitat technolgy to SS. Maybe case of   SS contracting SNC to supply DCs and habitats.

From CNBC article

“We have this vision…we may get there sooner than later…if we leverage some of the capital markets. There is that excitement that one cannot ignore, whether SPACs, I mean valuations are top levels, investment is record levels,” added Fatih, who is CEO of SNC, during that same interview.

I hope they make an IPO soon...

This is great news for Spirit team in Wichita, hopefully becomes of something.

This explains Spirit for those of us who've never heard of them. Their revenue for 2021 was $4B, been hit hard by their involvement in 737 program.

Spirit AeroSystems is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of aerostructures for commercial airplanes, defense platforms, and business/regional jets. With expertise in aluminum and advanced composite manufacturing solutions, the company’s core products include fuselages, integrated wings and wing components, pylons, and nacelles. We are leveraging decades of design and manufacturing expertise to be the most innovative and reliable supplier of military aerostructures, and specialty high-temperature materials, enabling warfighters to execute complex, critical missions. Spirit also serves the aftermarket for commercial and business/regional jets. Headquartered in Wichita, Kansas, Spirit has facilities in the U.S., U.K., France, Malaysia and Morocco. Is Turkey (TSA) going to functionally try have a national space station via outsourcing to Orbital Reef, rather than doing something with ESA?

It's actually TUA, Türkiye Uzay Ajansı, and my pure guess is that they will rent space in modules and buy seats on Dream Chasers as needed. Minimizes their capital outlay.

Doubt that this cooperation will result in anything other than to bring the first Turkish astronaut to space in some sort of a short patriotic mission.
I've been hearing about Turks ramping up their space game for about 20 years now and still they haven't achieved anything notable.
Not to mention that currently Turkiye's economy is in pretty bad shape.

Ah! Once again there are predictions of a dreaded "gap."

Quote from: Tom Vice, CEO of Sierra Space
The future of the ISS and the risk of a gap for continued U.S. presence in LEO have garnered headlines for months.

We must not lose sight, however, of the biggest and most concerning risk to the United States’ leadership in the commercial orbital age: China.

[...] China is showing no sign of slowing down and, in fact, could outpace the rest of the world in space transportation and LEO infrastructure.

For first Turkish astronaut, agency works with Axiom Space. They plan to buy a seat (actually they are at the signing the contract stage) from the Ax-3 mission.

This cooperation is about the future plans of the agency. Using Dreamchaser as an unmanned temp. station for longer duration experiments, using LIFE module for long duration human presence and creating commerce between Turkish spacetech companies and Sierra Space.

Turkish space efforts starts nearly 30 years ago. There was some attempts during 2000s. Some earth observation satellites produced in house and some launced. Then everything went dark. Until last 5 years.  Some companies working of IoT satellite constellations, one company working on an observation constellation (3m resolution ) and agency working on for astronaut program, and two moon project.

These are similar agreements to one RL signed and SpaceX with SS. I just don't see case for LVs replacing cargo planes when it comes to rapid deployment. A C5 Galaxy can be loaded and anywhere in world without 25-48hrs, good luck getting LV on pad with payload in that time. Still need weather to play ball.

This smells like japanese investment FOMO, same as how Spaceflight Inc got bought out. It isn't enough to pull Dreamchaser over to H-3 (assuming that's even a thing in the face of HTV-X and the planned manned capsule variant).

Sierra Space is expanding the use of AI in the space industry.

Excerpt from https://www.sierraspace.com/blog/generative-ai-in-the-space-industry-revolutionizing-engineering-monitoring-and-support-roles/:
Quote
At Sierra Space, AI is strategically segmented into three key domains to optimize its impact on our space operations. The first domain includes commercial solutions, which offer a range of AI tools designed to be deployed rapidly, which offer support functionality to team members and streamline administrative tasks while not requiring extensive training.

The second domain focuses on custom solutions that derive insights from Sierra Space’s unique datasets, employing AI to leverage historical data for strategic foresight and informed human decision-making. These intelligent algorithms significantly reduce time and cost, outpacing traditional methods for engineering design optimization and efficiency.

Lastly, the most advanced domain where AI comes to the forefront is with autonomous systems like those in the Dream Chaser spaceplane, granting spacecraft the ability to autonomously navigate to and dock with the International Space Station, while dynamically adapting to changing conditions in space. This adaptability extends to monitoring and tracking through real-time data analysis.

Not sure if this fits in the Dream Chaser thread...

Sierra Space Corp., Broomfield, Colorado, was awarded a $15,997,234 face value contract for maturation of the VR35K-A advanced upper stage engine. This contract provides for further development testing of the VR35K-A prototype engine and vehicle integration maturation. Work will be performed in Madison, Wisconsin, and is expected to be completed by Dec. 25, 2026. This contract was a sole source acquisition. Fiscal 2023 Congressional Interest Item research and development funds in the amount of $15,997,234 are being obligated at the time of award. The Air Force Test Center, Edwards Air Force Base, California, is the contracting activity (FA9300-23-R-6008).

Sierra Space Successfully Completes Key Development Milestone for SDA Missile Warning and Tracking Satellites [Nov 12]

Quote
Sierra Space, a leading commercial space company and defense-tech prime that is Building a Platform in Space to Benefit Life on Earth® and protect economic freedom in the Orbital Age®, announced today the successful completion of Preliminary Design Review (PDR) for the missile warning and tracking satellites the company is developing for the Space Development Agency (SDA) under a prime contract valued at $740 million.

The satellites are part of the SDA’s Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture, specifically the Tranche 2 Tracking Layer, which is a segment of the Defense Department’s Low Earth Orbit constellation.

“In response to the evolving threat environment, we are retooling our commercial capacity to focus on revitalizing the U.S. defense industrial base through innovative satellite and spacecraft systems technology,” said Tom Vice, CEO of Sierra Space. “Our company is focused on innovation at speed to support an entirely new era in National Security Space – at Sierra Space we care deeply for this planet and have the responsibility to protect it.”

SDA awarded the contract to Sierra Space through an Other Transaction Authority (OTA) in January 2024 for the design, production, delivery, operations and sustainment of 16 missile warning and tracking satellites, as well as two (2) satellites for missile defense with fire control fidelity. Additionally, the agreement includes two operational ground segments.

Sierra Space’s solution aims to enhance the capability to provide global, persistent indications, detection, warning, and tracking of conventional and advanced missile threats, including hypersonic missile systems. The company’s solution also offers preliminary missile defense capability by incorporating fire control quality sensors into the constellation. These sensors will generate fire control quality tracks that enable missile defense kill chains, a critical defense capability, to the warfighter.

Since 2023, Sierra Space has secured $1.5 billion in national security and defense contracts for the production of 30 satellites, including the SDA’s Tranche 2 Tracking Layer deliverables. In addition, Sierra Space continues to make strides in its spacecraft systems business, boasting more than 20 active contracts for solar arrays and other components.

Sierra Space will develop, integrate, and test its space vehicles at its satellite production facilities in Colorado.

Tom Vice retired as of Dec. 31st. Here's a statement for you:

After three and half years in the role, Tom Vice has retired as Sierra Space CEO as of the end of 2024 - we thank him for his leadership and wish him well in his retirement.

Sierra Space has experienced substantial growth and success through several key defining points throughout its history, becoming a leader in the space industry with significant investments made since its inception.

This year will be another defining point for us following the establishment of Sierra Space as a standalone company three and a half years ago and the additional major technology investments made for growth since then after a record capital raise.
To ensure a smooth leadership transition while we identify a new CEO, Chairman of the Sierra Space Board of Directors, Fatih Ozmen will serve as interim CEO alongside Eren Omen as President.

Sierra Space’s Resilient GPS Satellite Program Reaches Key Milestone [Jan 16]

Quote
Sierra Space, a leading commercial space company and defense-tech prime that is Building a Platform in Space to Benefit Life on Earth® and protect economic freedom in the Orbital Age®, announced today a key development milestone for the company’s Resilient GPS (R-GPS) program, marked by the successful completion of Systems Requirements Review (SRR). The SRR completion comes after the program’s kickoff in September and is a notable moment for Sierra Space’s national security program, with the ultimate goal of benefiting civilians and military operations through the protection of U.S. satellites.

GPS technology relies on satellite infrastructure and supports everything from ride-share and food delivery apps for civilians to critical navigation for military and defense operations. The increasing sophistication of adversarial threats, however, such as jamming and spoofing, necessitates advancements in GPS resilience. The U.S. Space Force’s (USSF) R-GPS program plans to address these challenges by integrating proliferated small satellites into the existing GPS architecture. Sierra Space’s expertise in small satellite technology and rapid deployment provides a competitive edge in achieving this goal.

“The successful Systems Requirements Review of our R-GPS program is a proof point for Sierra Space technology and a notable commercial milestone with our DoD customers,” said Erik Daehler, Vice President of Defense, Satellites & Spacecraft Systems at Sierra Space. “We are focused on efficiency and speed of development to outpace adversaries. The quick turnaround of two months from R-GPS program launch to this next step of development is exactly the speed at which commercial space companies should be moving. We look forward to the next phase of our R-GPS program and getting our satellite technology into orbit.”

SpaceNews: Geost sues Sierra Space over breach of contract in military satellite program [Feb 6]

Quote
Optical and infrared sensor supplier Geost has filed a $17.1 million breach of contract lawsuit against Sierra Space, alleging the company reneged on an agreement to use Geost’s sensor payloads for missile-tracking satellites under a U.S. Space Force program.

Geost, a subsidiary of LightRidge Solutions based in Arizona, filed the complaint on Jan. 4 in the U.S. District Court in Denver. The lawsuit accuses Sierra Space of engaging in subcontracting negotiations and encouraging Geost to pre-purchase materials, only to later abandon the deal in favor of a competing supplier, Leidos, after securing a $740 million contract from the Space Force’s Space Development Agency (SDA).

Listen, I'm always happy to see a new hydrolox engine. And when I first heard about this engine back in 2018, I thought it was a fantastic idea at the time. But frankly, now that it's finally here, a staggering 7 years later, I have absolutely no idea who the customer would be. The RL-10 has gotten cheap enough for ULA to just keep using it, OmegA went away, Blue Origin has it's own engines, as do Japan and Europe... and that's pretty much all the hydrolox users there are in the market.

This engine really needs to be getting some next level performance or affordability from the VORTEX design to have much of a chance. Which, to be clear, it might be. The oxygen is going to be much warmer when it starts combusting in this design than in the RL-10 (though probably not warmer than in the BE-7, which is a dual expander), which should help combustion efficiency. And supposedly the propellants have more time in the combustion chamber to mix and combust (though I'm not totally sure I understand how) which obviously would also help combustion efficiency. And while with modern 3D printing and channel walls, machining a regeneratively cooled combustion chamber is easier than it used to be, not have to do that is still cheaper. So... maybe?

For over 20 years, we have led the way in researching how to grow plants in space. Our team in Madison, Wisconsin, operates a specialized lab where we develop cutting-edge technologies to support life in space. Our principal scientist, Dr. Bob Morrow, has been pioneering space agriculture since the 1980s.

Our latest innovation, the Astro Garden system, utilizes hydroponics to grow plants without soil, ensuring a reliable food source for astronauts on the International Space Station.

This looks pretty interesting. Energy production is an issue in space and on the surface of places in our solar system not named Earth, but if the energy is produced from solar electric systems, then storage becomes the gating issue for night time survival.

This is also the kind of fundamental space science that the ISS is supposed to do, so good to see that they are planning to get it up in space before the ISS goes away.
If we don't continuously lower the cost to access space, how are we ever going to afford to expand humanity out into space?

Regenerative fuel cells don’t really outperform lithium batteries for the most part. Not for daily cycling, at least.

What do you mean by perform here? Cause it would seem to me there are a lot of metrics to judge by.

total system mass for earth or mars.

For the moon, it can potentially go the other way, but it’s still close.

Ok. That's what I guessed you'd meant, but I'm glad we clarified. And regenerative fuel cells performing similar or worse than lithium batteries in daily use, in terms of overall mass, makes sense to me with my limited knowledge.

So my intuition is that regenerative fuel cells might do better than lithium ion batteries for long term (ISS-like, multi-decade) deployments, especially in a thermal environment as extreme as the surface of the Moon. And since the vast majority of the imagery in this video is of a Moon base...

Does this make any sense? I'm not well plugged into the power systems world.

No, on the contrary, the regenerative fuel cells are more complicated with more moving parts (valves, etc), and so likely will last less long (note that the actual fuel cells themselves are electrochemical devices with degradation over time much like lithium cells, on top of the moving parts & pressure vessels).

I was referring to energy storage period and cycle time. For the Moon, you’re storing enough for 14 days of darkness instead of like half a day or so on Mars or Earth.

When used as part of a fuel cell, 1 kg of hydrogen can produce up to 23 kWh of electrical energy.

https://ahdb.org.uk/knowledge-library/hydrogen-electrolysis#:~:text=When%20used%20as%20part%20of,lower%20with%20an%20older%20battery.

Typical Li Ion battery is 250WH per kg.

To increase storage just need to add more LH and LOX tanks which are lot lighter and simpler than batteries.
Producing LH and LOX from water exhaust during lunar day shouldn't be issue given amount of solar available.

Okay, so now you also need water tanks.

Lithium batteries are available at up to 500Wh/kg.
