SpaceX Factories
« on: 04/05/2014 04:42 pm »
On Space-X's website they say that their manufacturing space is almost up to almost 1 million square feet, so I looked up their building in Google Maps to measure it.

It appears to be about 218 x 92 m in size, which is about 20,056 sq m, or 215,881 sq ft, or only a quarter of the quoted space.

So my question is, does anyone know where the other three quarters is?

The "factory" is not just one building in Hawthorne.

And you can include TX, FL and VAFB.

As I recall, the main Hawthorne building was ~450,000 square feet.  I think that they subsequently added stories on a part of the existing volume for offices, so the square footage in the main building would have increased.  Lastly, Musk or Shotwell also stated recently that they were thinking of dividing into two stories a part of the existing volume devoted to manufacturing.  It may have been that they already did multiple stories in other parts of the building besides the office space.

Added to that was SpaceX buying up buildings around them "like the borg," as Musk stated.  I don't have a clear idea about what they bought.

They will have to start looking for a tank mfg. facility in the gulf coast or Atlantic coast area once they get to Falcon X and XX.  No way they will be able to transport 6-10 meter cores overland.
