@NASA administrator Bill Nelson is on a multi-day visit to India involving a series of meetings beginning Monday with key government officials. 1/n

Nelson will also meet with space officials to deepen bilateral cooperation across a broad range of innovation and research-related areas, especially in human exploration and Earth science. 2/n

According to NASA, Nelson’s India visit fulfils a commitment through the US-India initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology (iCET) spearheaded by President Joe Biden and PM Narendra Modi. 3/n

Stated objectives of iCET for space include strengthening cooperation on human spaceflight, including establishing exchanges that will include advanced training for an Isro astronaut at NASA Johnson Space Centre. 4/n

According to the White House, “...Identifying innovative approaches for commercial sectors of the two countries to collaborate, especially with respect to activities related to NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) project,” is part of iCET.” 5/n

The partnership will also see initiation of new STEM talent exchanges by expanding the Professional Engineer and Scientist Exchange Programme (PESEP) to include space science, Earth science... 6/n

...and human spaceflight and extending a standing invitation to Isro to participate in NASA’s biannual international programme management course is another initiative. 7/n

Both countries will also strengthen bilateral commercial space partnership, including through a new US Department of Commerce and Indian Department of Space-led initiative under the US-India Civil Space Joint Working Group. 8/n

“Expanding the agenda of the US-India Civil Space Joint Working Group to include planetary defence,” is another joint goal, as per the White House. 9/n

“Nelson will visit several locations in India, including the Bengaluru-based facilities where the #NISAR (NASA-Isro Synthetic Aperture Radar) spacecraft, a joint Earth-observing mission, is undergoing testing and integration for launch in 2024,” NASA said 10/n

“Students in each country also will have the opportunity to meet with Nelson to discuss science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education and their roles as members of the Artemis Generation,” NASA said. n/n

#Update #space #IndoUS #thread

@NASA administrator Bill Nelson today reiterated how #Space has unified even adversaries for decades, pushing each other to partner for larger goals & said he'd visit URSC where #NISAR is being tested before its launch next year, on Thursday. 1/n

On a week-long visit to India, Nelson spoke with the press after an interaction with students at the Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum (VITM) here. 2/n

Highlighting the ever-growing collaboration between the US and India in the space sector, he said countries can achieve more when they join forces to explore outer space. 3/n

“It’s an honour to be in Bengaluru where it’s clear that NASA-Isro’s work will create possibilities that benefit members of #Artemis Generation [referring to youngsters, while he's from the Apollo Generation] in both our countries & around the world,” Nelson said. 4/n

Nelson also noted how NISAR is just one example of how the US and India’s partnership in space is helping people on Earth. Data from NISAR will help people worldwide better manage natural resources and hazards better, he added. 5/n

On the proposal of sending an Indian astronaut to the #ISS, Nelson said: “As per the agreement between PM Modi & President Biden, NASA is committed to training & sending an Indian in about a year. I have no more details on the matter and it is best to consult Isro.” 6/n

Nelson said he would visit URSC along with Wing Commander (retd) Rakesh Sharma, the first Indian citizen to go to Space. 7/n

Stressing on the importance of collaboration and how Space unites people, he said: “When I saw out of a spacecraft, I didn’t see race or religion that divides us back here. I saw a beautiful, colourful Earth suspended in the middle of nothing.” 8/n

Reiterating how even US & Russia worked together in the space domain in the middle of a cold war in the mid 1970s, he said: “This is true even with domestic politics in US. Republicans & Democrats are divided, but we see them come together when we speak of space." 9/n

He added that there was a great opportunity for US and India to further collaborate as the former looks to return to the Moon with an international crew using commercial landers through its Artemis programme. 10/n

India recently signed the Artemis Accords, while details of how the participation would be are still being worked out. It is still early to determine how India would benefit from the programme. n/n

Unquestionably third?  I put them fifth, and a tie at that.

1. USA
2/3. China/Europe
4. Japan
5/6. India/Russia

I would not put India in a tie with Russia.
Russia has put astronauts in space for many decades. Not only that, but the Soviets put the first astronauts into space, did the first spacewalk, first woman in space --- too many firsts to list here.

If Russia's been having a bit of a slow period, it doesn't feel like it will last.

I'd put Europe, Japan and India behind Russia.

This was specifically about "deep space exploration", which Russia's manned firsts were not. Deep space starts outside Earth's Hill sphere, IMO.

Russia does not seem to have a deep space exploration program at all, at the moment.

US court asks India to pay $132 million to Deutsche Telekom in Devas Antrix case

This was awarded by the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law arbitration, after it found that India was in violation of the bilateral investment treaty with Germany

The United States District Court for the District of Columbia confirmed a $132-million award awarded to Deutsche Telekom against the Republic of India. The German company had petitioned the court to confirm this award even as India countered this petition to get the award dismissed.

...

Indian courts have dismissed some of these awards, including a $1-billion award against the government enforced by the ICC. The Supreme Court of India acknowledged that the reason for the dismissal of these awards is the fraudulent incorporation of Devas.

#ISRO has developed a Carbon-Carbon composite nozzle for use on PSLV's 4th stage (PS4) engines!! 🚀

These nozzles are 67% lighter than the Columbium alloy nozzles that are currently used.

A PS4 engine fitted with this nozzle has also been successfully test-fired for 200 sec! 🔥

Successful ignition test on Semi Cryogenic Pre-Burner Ignition Test Article (PITA)

May 6, 2024

ISRO is developing a 2000 kN thrust semi-cryogenic engine working on an LOX Kerosene propellant combination for enhancing the payload capability of LVM3 and for future launch vehicles. Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC) is the lead centre for the development of semi-cryogenic propulsion systems with the support of other launch vehicle centres of ISRO. The assembly and testing of the propulsion modules were done at the ISRO propulsion complex (IPRC), Mahendragiri. As part of the engine development, a pre-burner ignition test article, which is a full complement of the engine power head system excluding the turbopumps is realized. The first ignition trial was conducted successfully on May 2, 2024, at semi cryo integrated engine test facility (SIET) at IPRC, Mahendragiri, which was dedicated to the nation recently by the honorable Prime Minister of India. Smooth and sustained ignition of the preburner is demonstrated which is vital for the starting of the semi-cryogenic engine.

Semi-cryogenic engine ignition is achieved using a start fuel ampule which uses a combination of Triethyle Alumnide and Triethyle Boron developed by VSSC and used for the first time in ISRO in the 2000 kN semi-cryogenic engine. Many injector elemental level ignition tests were conducted at the Propulsion Research Laboratory Division (PRLD) facility of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) for characterization. The ignition process is one of the most critical parts in the development of liquid rocket engine systems. With the successful ignition of the semi-cryo pre burner, a major milestone in the semi-cryo engine development has been achieved. This will be followed by development tests on the engine powerhead test article and fully integrated engine. The development of a semi-cryo stage with 120 tons of propellant loading is also under progress.

The successful ignition of a semi-cryo preburner is a major accomplishment of ISRO in the development of semi-cryogenic propulsion systems.

Will GSAT-22 also be GSAT-N3?

According to this presentation, it doesn't look like that.
https://www.nrsc.gov.in/sites/default/files/pdf/ebooks/UIM-2024/4_UIM_2024.pdf

I believe GSAT-22 is a Ku-band satellite. GSAT-N3 is supposed to be an S-band satellite.
https://www.nsilindia.co.in/sites/default/files/u1/Annual%20Report-2022-23%20-%20English.pdf

A long time ago GSAT-21 was announced as an S-band satellite. I don't know if that's still correct.
