From SZ-8 to the present, the instrument panel of the spacecraft is as shown in the picture. It is part of the spacecraft instrument lighting subsystem. There are several integrated display units, human-computer interaction equipment, and sounding units installed on the instrument panel. If I understand correctly, the instrument panel will be significantly upgraded from SZ-16 onwards. The new upgraded instrument panel will look similar to that of the new generation of manned spaceship test ships. Just like in the rendering above.

China Recruits New Astronauts for 2023 missions

China has finished recruiting a total of six astronauts for spaceflight missions in 2023.

Chinese astronauts will be on regular duty at the country’s space station in the future. Each batch of astronauts will support a mission duration of six months. There will be two batches of six astronauts in total to conduct spaceflight missions this year.

The update on the new astronauts comes from China’s first space traveler, Yang Liwei, also deputy chief designer of China’s manned space program.

“Before the start of the spaceflight mission, we will select the astronauts one or one and a half years in advance, including the astronauts who will perform the mission and the backup crew,” Yang said in a recent interview with the China Media Group.

Diverse backgrounds

“Now we’ve basically conducted astronaut selection for two missions together, and will select a backup crew. This is conducive to the connection between the regular training and that of the backup astronauts. Therefore, you can also imagine that we must have selected the next space station crew and the backup crew for this year’s missions, which is conducive to the execution of our entire mission,” Yang said.

China’s first batch of astronauts were initially pilots from the air force, “and now our astronauts come from colleges, universities, research institutions, engineering departments, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences,” Yang said.

This is not a new taikonaut recruitment.  The article should be titled "China assigns astronauts for 2023 missions".

What does seem new is that they will assign 6 taikonauts for SZ-16 and 6 more for SZ-17.  Until now, it seems that the backup crew fly the next mission.

All active taikonauts in groups 1 and 2 have flown at least one spaceflight, so I think that for these future missions they will already include in the assignments taikonauts from group 3, who approximately around last October would have already finished their ASCAN course (although this has not been confirmed by China). And I guess the first non-pilot to fly, could be a physician (or an engineer).

This seems to be just a notional guess as to the expedition dates given an average time of staying in orbit, after factoring in the handover period as well.

Someone on the Chinese side has been tracking the CSS orbit and simulates the optimized launch time for a 6.5 hours rendezvous-to-docking profile. According to them, the best T-0 is currently tracking May 30, 01:26:37 UTC +- 1 minute.

There are two Ceremony tours, one between May 28~31, one between May 29~June 1, so the May 30 is more possible.

As far as I'm aware, that's a record. Anyone can confirm?

Shenzhou-16: 3 people

This is correct.
(Jonathan also lists sub-orbital launches of New Shepard and SpaceShipTwo in the list, but they can be easily picked out by the very short time intervals)

AFAIK the overlap will be just under a day with the AX-2 Crew Dragon currently planned for undocking from ISS around 12:00 UTC on May 30 with landing a few hours later.

Interesting, Zhu is apparently also a university professor, but at the National University of Defense Technology (NUDT), and a 3rd Chinese astronaut class member (so not a Payload Specialist).

BTW that information about Zhu is incorrect (he did got his PhD from NUDT, but he actually was associate professor at the People Liberation Army's Strategic Support Force Space Engineering University, and it looks like he left when he was chosen into the Chinese astronaut corps' Class of 2020). He's currently Colonel rank (Jing is Major General).

Gui worked as a post-doc in Canada for several years before taking a position at Beihang University (York University, Department of Earth and Space Science and Engineering, 2014-16; Ryerson University (now Toronto Metropolitan), Department of Aerospace Engineering, 2016-17).

China unveiled its crew members for the Shenzhou-16 spaceflight mission on Monday, with the astronauts meeting the press a day before their scheduled launch.

Taikonauts Jing Haipeng, Zhu Yangzhu and Gui Haichao will carry out the mission to the China Space Station (CSS), the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) announced at a press conference.

The trio, the first crew after the CSS entered the application and development phase in 2022, is made up of three types of astronauts, said the agency.

Jing Haipeng will be the commander and spacecraft pilot, Zhu Yangzhu will be the flight engineer and Gui Haichao the payload specialist.

Coming from the astronaut brigade of the People's Liberation Army, Jing and Zhu will be mainly responsible for direct control and management of spacecraft and carrying out technological experiments.


Gui Haichao, a professor from Beihang University, will be responsible for conducting the in-orbit operation of aerospace science experiments and research.

Gui has received professional training in science, space engineering and other fields and has rich experience in operation, said the CMSA.

Jing Haipeng


Born in 1966, Jing was selected in the first batch of China's astronauts in January 1998.

He has participated in the Shenzhou-7, Shenzhou-9 and Shenzhou-11 manned missions, and served as commander in the last two missions. He was selected as the crew member and commander of the Shenzhou-16 manned flight mission in June 2022.

Jing will have conducted more flight missions than any other Chinese astronaut when his fourth mission begins on Tuesday.

"I feel honored and proud be born in a great motherland," said Jing at the press conference, adding that he also felt proud to be part of "a great new era."

The 57-year-old said he has been eager to go into space again for seven years, when he completed his last mission. "I haven't missed training in seven years, nor have I slept before 12 o'clock every night, and I've barely had a weekend off," he added.

Zhu Yangzhu

Zhu Yangzhu, born in September 1986, joined the Chinese People's Liberation Army in 2005. He was selected in the third batch of the country's astronauts in September 2020.

Shenzhou-16 will be his first space mission, and he will be the first flight engineer entering the CSS.

Gui Haichao

Gui Haichao, born in November 1986, was also selected as a member of China's third batch of astronauts in 2020, serving as a payload specialist.

"The word 'astronaut' was sacred and far from me in the past, and I've been dreaming of moving my research work into space one day," he said. "I didn't hesitate to sign up when I learned in 2018 that the country was about to select payload specialists."

"... Shenzhou 16 will evacuate the space station and plans to return to the Dongfeng landing site in the early morning of October 31.
What is different from the past is that after the separation of Shenzhou 16, it will briefly accompany the space station . The astronauts in the spacecraft will use handheld cameras to capture high-definition images of the Chinese space station with the earth as the background, depending on the lighting conditions .
This will be the first high-definition image of the exterior of the Chinese space station captured by Chinese astronauts in person."

The hole in the parachute wasn't that big but that seemed like a rough landing.

Will that impact the taikonaut's candidacy for the chinese moon program? Soyuz style landings are rough enough as it is, so if it's harder than normal they might have sustained injuries.

It is hard to tell how hard a Soyuz style landing is. Since a lot of debris is thrown up by the terminal retro rocket pack on the bottom of a Soyuz/Shenzhou capsule that ignites just prior to touchdown. Think there is actually more risk with high-G ballistic reentry than from any landing with a Soyuz/Shenzhou capsule.

At least once Soyuz 5 retrorocket failure had resulted in deceleration trauma. However, Boris Volynov recovered and returned to flight.
