On Aug. 12, 2018, NASA's Parker Solar Probe launched into space to "touch" the Sun.

A little more than six years later, it captured our closest-ever images of the Sun's atmosphere.

65 years ago today, the Discoverer XIII reentry capsule became the first human-made object to be recovered from orbit. "Discoverer" was the cover name for the highly classified Air Force/CIA Corona photoreconnaissance satellite program: https://s.si.edu/3DRYKID #AirSpacePhoto

August 10 was the Discoverer 13 recovery. August 18 was the Discoverer 14 recovery, the first one with film. If I had thought about it, I would have had an article ready for that anniversary, but I didn't. So bummer. Here's a small one:

Happy birthday to the one and only Gene Kranz! I’ve been fortunate to meet Gene on a few occasions, but one of my proudest moments at NASA is my interview with him last year.

He’s the definition of tough and competent, and you can listen here! https://nasa.gov/podcasts/houston-we-have-a-podcast/call-sign-white-flight/

If this photo looks a little retro, it's because it is!

On August 20, 1977, Voyager 2 launched from Cape Canaveral on a Titan/Centaur rocket, beginning its epic journey through the solar system and beyond.

48 years and counting:

50 years ago, Viking 1 launched, AND 48 years ago, Voyager 2 launched! 🚀

Both spacecraft mean a lot to us.

The Planetary Society was founded because of the Viking missions. Carl Sagan, who helped lead the mission, saw that NASA’s budget was going to be cut because the government believed people didn’t value space exploration. So he, Bruce Murray, and Louis Friedman started a grassroots group in 1979 to prove the public did care about exploring other worlds. They founded The Planetary Society in 1979.

Voyager 2 carried the Golden Record. Carl Sagan played a significant role in the Voyager missions by helping design the missions and advocating for the Golden Record—a time capsule containing images and sounds of Earth—on both Voyager 1 and Voyager 2, to potentially communicate with any extraterrestrial civilizations that might encounter the spacecraft.

Happy launchiversary to both missions!
