These low-inclination orbit pointing NOTAMs were released some days ago and it was uncertain whether they are meant for the launch of Aditya-L1 instead (which fits with previously reported rocket serial numbers, however it was reported for an August-September launch before hand).

How do we know this is C56? The previously published information gave the vehicle as C57. ISRO has launched vehicles out of sequence before, e.g., C30 on 28 September 2015 was before C29 on 16 December 2015.

How do we know this is C56? The previously published information gave the vehicle as C57. ISRO has launched vehicles out of sequence before, e.g., C30 on 28 September 2015 was before C29 on 16 December 2015.

PSLV-C56/DS-SAR Mission

The launch of PSLV-C56 carrying DS-SAR satellite, along with 6 co-passengers from the first launch-pad of SDSC-SHAR, Sriharikota is tentatively scheduled towards the end of July 2023.

PSLV-C56 is configured in its core-alone mode, similar to that of C55. It would launched DS-SAR, a 360 kg satellite into a Near-equatorial Orbit (NEO) at 5 degrees inclination and 535 km altitude.


DS-SAR
The DS-SAR satellite is developed under a partnership between DSTA (representing the Government of Singapore) and ST Engineering. Once deployed and operational, it will be used to support the satellite imagery requirements of various agencies within the Government of Singapore. ST Engineering will use it for multi-modal and higher responsiveness imagery and geospatial services for their commercial customers.

DS-SAR carries a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) payload developed by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). This allows the DS-SAR to provide for all-weather day and night coverage, and capable of imaging at 1m-resolution at full polarimetry.

The co-passengers are:
1) VELOX-AM, a 23 kg technology demonstration microsatellite.
2) ARCADE Atmospheric Coupling and Dynamics Explorer (ARCADE), an experimental satellite
3) SCOOB-II , a 3U nanosatellite flying a technology demonstrator payload
4) NuLIoN by NuSpace, an advanced 3U nanosatellite enabling seamless IoT connectivity in both urban & remote locations.
5) Galassia-2, a 3U nanosatellite that will be orbiting at low earth orbit.
6) ORB-12 STRIDER , satellite is developed under an International collaboration

Nice launch ISRO! But strange that there is no specific mention of the Aditya mission by the chairman. Only a reference to a PSLV launch in August or early September. That could be another commercial one.

The stage is purposefully manoeuvred to a 295 km x 300 km orbit.  It now spends significantly less time in space, reducing its duration from over two decades to less than two months, before re-entering the Earth's atmosphere.

Reduced time in Space = Less risk of debris!

A remote sensing nanosatellite built by multidisciplinary students from CDE has been successfully launched into orbit from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre near Chennai in southern India.

Galassia-2 blasted off at 900 AM on 30 July 2023 aboard PSLV-C56, a rocket operated by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

Galassia-2 is a 3U CubeSat class of nanosatellite, measuring 300 millimeters tall, 100 millimeters long by 100 millimeters wide and weighs about four kilograms. Its primary mission is remote sensing for agriculture and environmental change using a multispectral camera on board.

Galassia-2 was launched alongside six other satellites, including the 351.9 kilogram DS-SAR, a Singapore-owned earth observation satellite.

After deployment, mission controllers will spend the next few days stabilising and establishing contact with Galassia-2, checking that all the deployables have performed correctly, and conducting functional tests for the satellite’s sub-systems before beginning the mission proper. It is expected to be operational for between six months and a year.

De-orbiting PS4 stage in PSLV-C56 Mission

August 05, 2023

PSLV-C56 vehicle successfully injected DS-SAR and 6 other satellites into their intended 536 km circular Low Earth Orbit (LEO) with a 5-degree inclination on July 30, 2023. The vehicle achieved the precise target orbit conditions in 20 minutes after lift-off using the Onboard Navigation, Guidance and Control system and completed its mission.

Left alone in a 536 km circular orbit, the PS4 stage would orbit the Earth for over 25 years. As the number of satellites in LEO is growing and the space around this orbit is of particular interest, the orbit of the spent PS4 stage was reduced to 300 km circular. In line with India's commitment to supporting worldwide space debris mitigation efforts, the Onboard Guidance Algorithm was modified to achieve this orbit-change manuevre. The Orbit Change Thrusters (low thrust engines) were fired twice for orbit change.

Furthermore, in line with standard launch practices, the PS4 Stage was passivated after the re-orbiting process, as no further active propulsion need was anticipated. This passivation involved venting of all pressurized compartments (Tanks/Gas bottles) to release any stored energy or potential hazardous substances. By mitigating the possibility of pressurized compartment failures, the chance of fragmentation of the spent stage in orbit is minimized, thereby further reducing the creation of space debris.
