In the last couple of days, the danish cubesat, AAUSAT3 (http://www.space.aau.dk/aausat3/), has been  succesfully vibration tested and integrated into it's X-pod at the University of Toronto (http://www.utias-sfl.net/). The spacecraft now waits for transportation to India, which is expected to happen during first part of November.

By the way, the official spelling of the spacecraft is AAUSAT3 (only capital letters, no dash). On the other hand, it is a 1U cubesat and thereby weighting no more than 1 kg, not 3 kg as in the upper post.

Thanks for keeping us updated about launch news!

    Regards,
    Troels Jessen
AAUSAT3 developer, responsible for antenna system.

    SARAL launch postponed to February

Problems surfaced when Indo-French satellite was put through thermo-vacuum testing

Glitches in SARAL, a satellite meant for studying the ocean currents and sea surface heights, has led to the postponement of its launch from December to the second week of February 2013 from the Sriharikota spaceport.

    MEDIA AVAILABILITY

    NEOSSat Arrives in India

Longueuil, Quebec, January 21, 2013 – On January 18, Canadian satellite NEOSSat (Near-Earth Object Space Surveillance Satellite) arrived in India. It is the world’s first space telescope designed by the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) to detect and track asteroids and satellites. NEOSSat is planned to lift off aboard India’s Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), during a launch window scheduled to open on February 11.

By circling the globe every 100 minutes and scanning space near the Sun to pinpoint otherwise almost invisible asteroids, NEOSSat will provide a dramatic improvement in the surveillance of objects that pose a collision hazard with Earth. As part of Canada’s commitment to keeping orbital space safe for everyone, it will also offer unprecedented opportunities for tracking space debris.

This mission builds upon Canada’s expertise in compact, microsatellite design. The 65-kilogram spacecraft is the size of a small suitcase. Although NEOSSat’s 15-centimetre telescope is relatively small, once high above the Earth’s atmosphere, it will give it a huge advantage in searching the blackness of space for faint signs of asteroids.

    When:  January 22, 2013 (from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Eastern standard time)

What:   Media availability from the CSA

Who:    William Harvey, Senior Project Manager

Guennadi Kroupnik, Director, Satellite Comm. & Space Environment Projects

Denis Laurin, Space Astronomy Senior Program Scientist

To schedule interviews with CSA spokespersons, please contact CSA Media Relations.

Are we sure Max Valier is schedule for this flight? On the project webpage the countdown clock says launch is still 159 days away (or is it counting down to something else?).

Good for Canada. Actually doing something, maybe it will spur others! What's the design lifetime of this satellite?

NEOSSat to Launch on Indian Rocket

Longueuil, Quebec, February 21, 2013 – On February 25, Canadian satellite NEOSSat (Near-Earth Object Surveillance Satellite) will be launched aboard India’s Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) from Satish Dhawan Space Center, in Sriharikota (India).

NEOSSat builds upon our country’s cutting edge expertise in compact, microsatellite design and will be the world’s first space telescope entirely dedicated to detecting and tracking not only asteroids, but also satellites and space debris.

This ground-breaking mission was developed in Canada as a result of a close collaboration
between several key partners including the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC), the University of Calgary and Microsat Systems Canada Inc., amongst others.

The media should be able to view the launch live on the DDI News Website.

    When:          February 25, 2013

What time:  7:25 a.m. (Eastern Standard Time)

What:          Launch of NEOSSat from India

    Where:         Live feed at http://webcast.gov.in/live/

    About NEOSSat

    For general information:

Does any one (from technical ppl) have any idea on the C20 technical changes from it's previous flights?

In the brochure, few changes are mentioned:
    1. PS2 (L40) is mentioned as PL40. Usually it is PS2 (L40 with Vikas 41.5T liquid). What does 'P' signify here?
    2. PS3 is mentioned as HPS3. Usually it is PS3 (S7 Solid). What does 'H' signify here?
    3. Even the PS4 specification is changed: the length is reduced from 2.6 m to 2.0 m. Not sure whether it is a typo or not!

If any one has the info, request to clarify.

    Thx in advance! :)

  • 7 S/C
  • DLA-U
  • PS4

59 hour countdown! Sounds like a lenghty countdown, is it possible to get a breakdow n for the different operations / checkouts? How does it compare for other vehicles?

I suppose the major time consumeing operations would be the propellant loading of the the two liquid fuel stages and the R.CS.

Canada Stays at the Forefront of Space Telescope Technology with the Launch of New Surveillance Satellite

Longueuil, Quebec, February 25, 2013 – The Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), today celebrated the successful launch of the Canadian space telescope, the Near-Earth Object Surveillance Satellite (NEOSSat). NEOSSat launched at 7:31 (EST) from Sriharikota, India aboard a Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) rocket together with Department of National Defence’s satellite Sapphire.

“Today marks another milstone for Canada’s world renowned space sector. This microsatellite is a testament to Canadian ingenuity and leadership in advanced space technology,” said Minister Paradis. “Our Government will continue to support the development of this vital sector to ensure it can continue to foster innovative technologies and create high-quality jobs for Canadians.”

Known as Canada’s “Sentinel in the Sky”, NEOSSat is the world’s first experimentalicrosatellite designed to detect and track space objects, debris and satellites. Funded and managed jointly by the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC), NEOSSat will perform multiple tasks, while carrying out two distinct missions serving the needs of the science and defence communities.

“Today’s successful launch is a great accomplishment made possible by Canadian specialized expertise and technology that has literally pushed the boundaries of innovation. As NEOSSat becomes fully operational, the satellite will provide us with key data and imagery from the unique vantage point of space to become our Sentinel in the Sky” said Gilles Leclerc, Acting President of the CSA.

The suitcase-sized NEOSSat will orbit approximately 800 kilometres above the Earth, searching for near-Earth asteroids and space objects that are difficult to spot using ground-based telescopes. Because of its location, NEOSSat will not be limited by the day-night cycle and will operate 24/7.

For more details about the microsatellite NEOSSat, visit:http://www.asc-csa.gc.ca/eng/satellites/neossat/default.asp.

    Jacques :-)

So this screen cap confirmed something I suspected from basic geography. Launching directly into a sun-synchronous orbit from Sriharikota Island would take the LV right over the city of Chennai, with its 5+ million people, 45 miles away at an azimuth of 178 degrees.  (I'm sure there are plenty of other population centers along that track.)  So obviously, the LV is pointed out to sea and does a nice right-hand curve trajectory to get to polar orbit, as shown on the image.

Seems like this might be one of the more dramatic examples of course shaping among world-wide launch sites?  I suppose that imposes some performance penalty, as would trying to shoot for the poles from anywhere this close to the equator?

I find it interesting that this map excludes Sri Lanka... And it looks like that path (if accurate) would take it straight over Sri Lanka.

Does India have some sort of treaty and or understanding that allows this?

EDIT: I have attached an image of the path overlaying a Google map screenshot.

I find it interesting that this map excludes Sri Lanka... And it looks like that path (if accurate) would take it straight over Sri Lanka.

Does India have some sort of treaty and or understanding that allows this?

EDIT: I have attached an image of the path overlaying a Google map screenshot.
The LV track on the screen captured map is schematic (Sri Lanka has disappeared! ;D ). The map below for the debris avoidance zones shows a dogleg to avoid overflying Sri Lanka

Seems like this might be one of the more dramatic examples of course shaping among world-wide launch sites?  I suppose that imposes some performance penalty, as would trying to shoot for the poles from anywhere this close to the equator?

Performance penalty is close to 500 Kgs of payload loss. ISRO is considering  second  spaceport that will not require such course shaping.

Honourable President of India Witnesses the Successful Launch of Seven Satellites onboard PSLV-C20

ISRO's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, PSLV-C20, successfully launched the joint Indo-French Satellite, SARAL, today (February 25, 2013) in its twenty third flight from Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) SHAR, Sriharikota. Six other satellites, namely, UNIBRITE (NLS 8.1) and BRITE (NLS 8.2) from Austria, SAPPHIRE and NEOSSAT from Canada, AAUSAT-3 (NLS 8.3) from Denmark; and STRaND-1 from the United Kingdom, have also been launched into their planned orbits along with SARAL.

Honourable President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee along with the Governor of Andhra Pradesh, Shri E. S. L. Narasimhan, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Shri N Kiran Kumar Reddy, Minister of State (Prime Minister's Office), Shri V Narayanasamy and other dignitaries from the Government of Andhra Pradesh witnessed the launch from the state-of-the-art Mission Control Centre of SDSC. Honourable President, in his post launch remarks, congratulated the scientists and engineers of ISRO for the successful launch.

At the completion of the countdown, PSLV-C20 lifted off from the First Launch Pad at SDSC SHAR, at 1801 hrs (IST) with the ignition of the first stage of the launch vehicle. The important flight events, namely, stage ignitions, heat-shield separation, stage separations and satellite injections took place exactly as planned.

After a flight of 17 minutes 55 seconds, the main payload, SARAL, weighing 407 kg was injected to an orbit very close to the intended orbit. Following this, the six auxiliary satellites were also successfully injected.

This has been the twenty second successive successful launch of ISRO's workhorse launch vehicle PSLV. Since its first successful launch in 1994, PSLV has launched 27 Indian satellites and 35 satellites for customers from abroad, including the satellites launched today. It has also launched India's geosynchronous satellites, Kalpana-1 and GSAT-12, thereby proving its versatility. PSLV also launched India's first spacecraft mission to moon, Chandrayaan-1, in 2008. It is scheduled to launch India's first interplanetary mission, the Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) spacecraft, by the end of this year.

Satellite with Argos and Altika (SARAL) is an oceanographic satellite jointly developed by ISRO and the French Space Agency CNES. The satellite is built by ISRO, whereas CNES contributed the ARGOS and ALTIKA payloads. Data from SARAL will be useful for researchers besides having many practical applications like marine meteorology and sea state forecasting, climate monitoring, continental ice studies, environmental monitoring, protection of biodiversity and improvement in maritime security.

ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) in Bangalore took over the SARAL's monitoring and control operations immediately after its injection. Following the automatic deployment of SARAL's solar panels, shortly after reaching orbit, all the subsequent operations are proceeding normally.

Just after PS4 ignition, the V vs T plot became a little jagged, with atleast a couple of data points way off. Could this be due to a noisy INS or data corruption in the communication link?
