Re-posting:
On-going coverage of the Chandrayaan-3 mission continues in the relevant Space Science thread:

This thread is just for the launch.

I don't understand if we should post mission updates here or in the other thread.
This is the launch thread and covers until spacecraft separation from the launcher and the other thread is the mission thread which covers everything post separation to end of mission of all spacecraft elements of the combined spacecraft stack.

does anyone have details on the hazards avoidance camera on board the lander? Like when does it start, and how does it respond to obstacles et al ? Thank you!

The cryogenic upper stage (CUS) of the launch vehicle that launched India’s #Chandrayaan3, the LVM3-M4, has made an uncontrolled re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere, Isro has confirmed. 1/n

“The uncontrolled re-entry happened around 2.42pm on November 15. The probable impact point was predicted over the North Pacific Ocean. The final ground track did not pass over India… 2/n

…This rocket body was part of the vehicle that successfully injected the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft into the intended orbit of 133km x 35,823km with a 21.3° inclination on July 14,” Isro said. 3/n

The rocket body part’s ID as assigned by the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), which tracks objects in space, is “57321” 4/n

“Re-entry of the rocket body took place within 124 days of its launch. The post-mission orbital lifetime of the LVM3-M4 CUS is, thus, fully compliant with the “25yr rule” for LEO objects as recommended by Inter-Agency Space Debris Coordination Committee (IADC),” Isro said. 5/n

It added that post Chandrayaan-3 injection, the CUS had also undergone “passivation” to remove all residual propellant and energy sources to minimise the risks of accidental explosions. 6/n

“...This is as per space debris mitigation guidelines by UN & IADC. Passivation & Post-mission disposal of this rocket body in adherence to internationally accepted guidelines reaffirms India’s commitment to preserve long-term sustainability of outer space activities.” n/n
