Ukrainian-Russian team continues Angosat preparations

By the end of April 2017, Ukrainian engineers were to begin work on the routine servicing of the Zenit rocket intended for the Angosat mission in Baikonur. At the same time, Russian and Ukrainian officials finally reached an agreement on technical cooperation in planning the launch of Angosat-1 in September of the same year. By that time, KB Yuzhnoe finalized the flight scenario, which would enable Moscow-based NPTs AP development center to model it on its simulation facility two or three months prior to launch and then program it into the flight control system of the Zenit rocket and its Fregat-SB upper stage.

Despite good progress on the engineering front of the Angosat-1 mission, political problems continued hampering the preparations of the Russian-Ukrainian launch. As of the end of June 2017, the planned liftoff for Angosat-1 slipped to October 21, however, even that date was considered optimistic within the industry. At the time, the Ukrainian team, which had to perform a scheduled maintenance on the Zenit rocket, was still waiting for permission to travel to Baikonur from the Ukrainian authorities.

Not heard back on that form the people I contacted, but the sat is almost ready for its final acceptance certification and pre-shipment review and in May the Fregat-SB Upper Stages for both Lybid and Angosat flights were placed in their shipping containers and are awaiting shipment to their respective MIK processing cells at Cosmodrome Baikonur. Both flights are to launch nearly back to back by the end of the year.

Angosat completes vacuum testing

On Aug. 10, 2017, RKK Energia announced that thermal and vacuum testing of the Angosat satellite inside the the VK600/300 facility at NITs RKP center in Peresvet had been successfully completed. According to the company, all modes of operation for the satellite's service systems and communications payload were tested, including various contingencies. Representatives from Angola oversaw the operations. The test chamber simulated deep vacuum, solar radiation and reflected radiation of the Earth, as well as changing position of the satellite in space, RKK Energia said.

Upon completion of tests, the spacecraft was delivered back to RKK Energia's campus in Korolev in preparation for final acceptance tests.

Only in March 2017, there were first signs that the Lybid program might have a chance to get off the ground. In an interview with the Interfax-Ukraine news agency, Acting Head of Ukrainian Space Agency, GKAU, Yuri Radchenko said that before the end of that month, the Yuzhmash factory in Dnepr, Ukraine, was expected to pay Moscow-based NPO Energomash for the RD-171M engine to be installed on the fully assembled first stage of the Zenit rocket slated to launch Lybid. At the same time, industry sources said that personnel at Yuzhmash had began testing a fully assembled second stage of the Zenit for the Lybid mission.

Thanks, RH117!

Since my previous post in this thread, I found this posting from 2.5 years ago, which gives some historical context:
<snip>
http://izvestia.ru/news/582498
<snip>

The article says two Zenit rockets are ready and have been delivered to Russia. One wil launch Elektro-L nr. 2 in June and the other is supposed to launch Spektr-RG in 2017. A TsENKI official told Izvestiya there should be no problem with the Elektro launch this June, but the Spektr-RG launch by Zenit is in jeapordy because of the uncertainty over the fate of Yuzhmash  (by 2017 Yuzhmash specialists may no longer be available to take part in launch preparations and no spare parts may be available for the rocket).

Another Zenit rocket has been assembled at Yuzhmash for the launch of the Ukrainian Lybid communications satellite, but Yuzhmash cannot afford to buy the Russian-built RD-171 engine and guidance and control systems for the rocket.

<snip>

Putting this all together, it looks like three Zenit launches are still on the manifest :
- June 2015 : Elektro-L nr. 2  (rocket ready and delivered)  (My EDIT: launched December 2015)
- ? 2015 : Lybid  (rocket still lacks engines and guidance & control systems)
- ? 2017 : Spektr-RG (rocket ready and delivered)  (My EDIT: re-purposed for Angosat-1)

<snip>

And the Spektr-RG thread from last year, regarding the launch vehicle disposition:
According to news report, Spektr has moved to Proton and the Zenit will be used for Angosat-1

this http://izvestia.ru/news/644111

http://tass.ru/kosmos/3909740

The deputy director of the Institute of Space Research Mikhail Pavlinskiy says the launch of Spektr-RG is now scheduled for March 2018. It will most likely be launched by a Proton/Blok-DM03 originally earmarked for the Glonass program. The Zenit originally scheduled to launch Spektr-RG will now launch AngoSat.

Maybe, but check and see if their is an old thread first. Might want to wait until the Lybid ships because then we know that its going to launch.

By the end of August, KB Yuzhnoe received all the necessary permissions from the government in Kiev to participate in the Angosat project. The company immediately made plans to send a team of its specialists to Baikonur to service the Zenit launcher for the mission and keep the necessary personnel at the launch site to support the Angosat campaign. As of the end of August, the launch of Angosat was set for Dec. 7, 2017, with December 14 as a backup.

The launch of the Angolan communications satellite Angosat-1 with the help of the Russian-Ukrainian Zenit launch vehicle may be postponed for the next year. The start was planned for December 7, but there were difficulties with refueling the Fregat upper stage, which should deliver the spacecraft into orbit. One of the units went out of operation - it needs to be replaced. Contractors for the launch of the satellite - the Rocket and Space Corporation (RSC) Energia - promise to repair the malfunction as soon as possible.

As Izvestiya was told in the RKK that produced the Angolan satellite, a technical malfunction was revealed in the Fregat overclocking unit (RB).

- During the training, specialists from Roskosmos revealed the abnormal operation of one of the nodes of the Republic of Belarus, said RKK CEO Vladimir Solntsev. "We are glad that we managed to localize the problem here on Earth, and save the payload over which we worked long and hard. I am sure that the malfunction will be eliminated in the shortest possible time - both the rocket and the apparatus will fly.

As Izvestia explained to the source at the Baikonur Cosmodrome, it turned out that filling up the tanks of the Republic of Belarus with one of the fuel components is not carried out. Most likely, you will have to change one of the unit's units. At the cosmodrome, this can not be done, so the "distiller" will have to return to the Moscow region of Khimki at the manufacturing plant - NPO Lavochkin.

In this case, work on troubleshooting, explained the interlocutor of "Izvestia", postpone the launch at the end of 2017 - early 2018. Instead of the selected upper stage, a similar one stored in the Lavochkin NGO can be used to launch another satellite. In this case, the delivery time of the second "Frigate-SB" to Baikonur and the need to conduct prelaunch work with it also transfer the start date to several weeks.

The source explained that on Friday and throughout the weekend at the enterprises of the industry, meetings were held to find measures for troubleshooting.
