After more than two years of silence, SpaceX has taken the first major tangible steps towards the construction of a dedicated South Texas rocket testing facility.

Stabilized version of video:

Why did you crop the video?
LEO is the ocean, not an island (let alone a continent). We create cruise liners to ride the oceans, not artificial islands in the middle of them. We need a physical place, which has physical resources, to make our future out there.

Can you post the unstabilized version?

Great work with the stabilization, Dave!

Nekhara and a friend also took a ton of awesome photos during a trip down there a few days ago. I think he even caught NomaddCam :D

Crews Tear Down Dirt Mound at SpaceX Launch Pad Site

BROWNSVILLE – Crews are churning dirt at the SpaceX launch pad site near Boca Chica Beach.

Officials say the dirt mound is being torn down to re-purpose the area.

They explain the land will be used as a test site for the Big Falcon Rocket, which will require a smaller concrete launch pad.

"It was all brought in, piled up, compacted and all that stuff. Then the rain would come, washed it down, and all that and it just settled," says resident Terry Heaton. "It didn't, from my understanding, really do much of anything. I can't really understand how they plan on doing it unless they're going to put an awful lot of concrete out there."

KRGV’s Daisy Martinez reached out to SpaceX to find out why the area is being re-purposed and is awaiting their response.

The lack of journalism in the report would be funny if it weren't so sad and pervasive. At least it's not offensive. They attribute the teslarati.com website to SpaceX, calling it theirs.
[ paraphrase ]
SpaceX is moving their dirt pile in Boca Chica. On their teslarati website, SpaceX says they're repurposing the area for a BFR pad. Terry Heaton says the dirt pile just sat there and washed away in the rain. Then he says SpaceX is less annoying since they're not actually doing anything, and surmises that they won't do anything for 5 or 10 years, since they haven't so far.
[/paraphrase]

Some people are clearly unaware of the purpose of soil loading.

I had a conversation with the soil guy a while back. He wasn't sure the silty, rounded grain stuff that was best for compacting would be a good slab base. They could be removing most of the hill and building the base back up with the rocky aggregate they used in other places. Or something else.
Terry knows what surcharging is. He's just grumbling.

I worked it out once but forget the exact number of 13,000 gallon (cryo) LNG tanks it would take to match that 95,000 gallon LOX tank. I never was sure if that 95,000 gallons was total volume or cryo rated volume, meaning a 20% or so minimum ullage.

Funny coincidence...Because of road closures, I'm passing right through there tomorrow.
A couple of drunken Irishmen in Dresden decided I was Jeff Bridges a week ago. Maybe I can parlay that into a celebrity ride. (Assuming the pilot doesn't need to be three sheets to the wind to make me look like a movie star)
Good to see Bocachicagal finally back at work.

Pipistrel also make the Alpha Electro, a revolutionary battery powered 2-seat trainer. You should ask for a ride in that too!

Although Nomadd is our hero (I know I live vicariously through him) ... MAYBE fly back to on topic again?

https://www.teslarati.com/spacex-second-huge-propellant-south-texas-bfr-test-site-arrival/

Article seems to be saying it is another 95,000 LOX tank
2 of those tanks should just about be a full load of LOX. I'm getting something like 13 of the little LNG tanks to handle the methane end.
Could there be hot and cold tanks? Do they subchill all the liquid then load, or chill as they're loading?

Heheh precisely what I calculated. Without supercooling, they should be able to hold ~860t of LOX, which is conveniently the exact number given for a ship's LOX load in 2017.

Channel 5 news has a new update on construction at the SpaceX site at http://www.krgv.com/story/39360667/spacex-project-making-progress-at-boca-chica-beach-site .  This news report is a bit more accurate than the previous one.  One new item is that a SpaceX spokesman is quoted as saying that "SpaceX has now received the final major ground system tank needed to support initial test flights of the Big Falcon Spaceship."
