That upper stage was being tested ahead of the first RS1 launch from Kodiak Island, Alaska. “After some final engine design changes were identified last summer, we set an aggressive schedule to try to launch by the end of 2021,” Piemont said. “Our schedule slipped a bit in past few months, but our programs were converging towards a launch from Kodiak in February.”

After the incident, he said the company expects a three-month delay in that first launch. The upper stage being built for the second RS1 launch will now be used for the first launch. The lower stage is complete and currently in storage in Kodiak, while the interstage between the first and second stages is being shipped to Kodiak. The payload fairing has completed acceptance testing and will soon be shipped to the launch site.

I see that gongora accidentally posted the Rocket Launching notice three times instead of the Rocket Launching notice and the two Space Debris notices, so here are those two notices.

Here also are my calculated launch times:
February 1 at 18:56 and 22:13 UTC.
February 2 at 18:34 and 21:51 UTC.

Cross-post:

The first batch of Blackjack satellites is now planned for launch this fall on a SpaceX rideshare, which would be the Transporter-6 mission in October 2022.

CACI ramping up production of optical terminals for low Earth orbit satellites [dated Jan. 30]

Quote
Blackjack is an experiment to demonstrate the capabilities of small satellites in low Earth orbit for military communications, missile warning and navigation.

Optical terminals from SA Photonics already are in space as part of a DARPA demonstration called Mandrake 2. Two small satellites — launched June 30 on a SpaceX rideshare mission — were deployed by the agency to prove out optical inter-satellite link technology in preparation for the first launch of Blackjack satellites.

A DARPA spokesperson said Jan. 28 that the Mandrake 2 satellites “remain healthy and testing is ongoing.”

The first batch of Blackjack satellites will launch this fall also on a SpaceX rideshare, the spokesperson said.

Batch consists of four satellites, according to this article from April.

Quote
Julie Pecson, Lockheed Martin’s Blackjack program director, said the first four spacecraft are scheduled to launch in June 2022.

“We really don’t know until we do the wet dress rehearsal how much additional time it will take to get ready to launch,” Whitmeyer said. “We hope it won’t be a significant amount of time but really the purpose of the wet dress rehearsal is to see how the vehicle performs in an integrated fashion ... I just want to be clear that we we really want to see the results of that test before we can kind of be able to really predict with a good amount of confidence the period of time before we launch.”

With a March launch out the window, the next opportunities NASA is looking at are from April 8-23 and May 7-21. If it delays further, the next windows are June 6-16 and June 29-July 12.
