Air Force’s rocket propulsion arm looking to invest in technologies for ‘responsive launch’

The request said AFRL is not looking to address any specific national security launch requirements but wants to better understand what technologies and capabilities are available and which ones need to be developed to help shorten the time it takes to plan and launch space missions.

The Dutch have studied using their F-16s for nanosat launch.  I’ve long thought that if the USAF/Space Force became serious about a true, wartime launch capability, we’d build solid upper stages that could be launched by stripped-down QF-4/QF-16/QF-15 target drones.  Maybe even modify the drones with MIPCC and a long nose boom to boost performance, as NASA has studied.  With microsats waiting on the ground, would provide a standby capability that could be launched with hours notice, vice days to weeks for the commercial SLVs, from dispersed locations for rapid replenishment of on-orbit capabilities.

Orbital velocity is mach 23, with large external payload mach 2 would be about it for a jet. I doubt 2 stage SRB would be enough.

The Dutch study is three-stage on an F-16.  Per Mehta’s study, an QF-4 with MIPCC hits Mach 2.5 around 60K ft.  Even with poor upper stage drag, the satellite payload is measured in the 100-200lb range.  When they start to be converted, QF-15s would do even better.

Space Force to select small rocket for ‘responsive space’ mission [May 12]
