Incredible post-sunset display as SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket performs its boostback burn to return to land at Cape Canaveral after launching the COSMO-SkyMed Second Generation FM2 mission this evening!

CSG-2 launched with booster 1052.
Booster 1052 have now completed 3 flights, landing at LZ-1 every time.

First time seen 2nd right till 10 second after fairing deploy clearly amazing I will remember this
imagine how tiny this 2205 kg payload is

Is the second stage deorbiting? Or is it venting fuel and passivating?

Lots of pictures of the second stage making a bright spiral in the sky over the US, appearing to vent fuel.

Apparently, it was the orbital circularization burn.

Does anyone know, if the second stage is deorbiting sometime later?

bad luck
I have to wait for the arrival of this booster after it's 1st droneship landing and recovery or a high definition close image of this launch as it is no image of the booster aft till now
For prelaunch I can get to this much only due to transporter erector spoiling the show
https://mobile.twitter.com/therealjonvh/status/1487159000533721091
In the transporting of booster for slc40 we would have seen it if the engines were not covered
https://mobile.twitter.com/HomemDoEspacoBr/status/1486803834714443785
Case left open till launch of B1052.4 if it is a droneship landing
though no confirmation through images this article may tell that the struts connections at booster's aft are removed

Pretty cool to see the spiral vapor trail from the orbital burn for COSMO-SkyMed Second Generation satellite over the middle of the U.S.
No, the burn and dump visible over the US Midwest was the deorbit burn.

Orbit circularization occurred half an orbit earlier, followed by spacecraft separation.

See the maps in this post up-thread.

@Chris - where's all that awesome footage you showed during the lifestream? NSF must have had at least 3 cameras pointed at the rocket, but the actual life-stream switched back and forth between them and - due to time lag - missed some of the best moments (for example stage separation had not yet happened in one, and after the cut, S1 was already in boostback burn)

I looked here, I looked in S2, I looked on the NSF youtube channel - but there's nothing. Could you please upload some of that awesome rawfootage to youtube?

Wow, thank you SpaceX team and especially ground camera operator for these stunning views! That was a job well done! I think this was the first time I have seen a fairing separation from the ground.

My view from Michigan was not spiral but I saw two bright fans spreading from the central spot. My sky was hazy with high cirrus so either I missed the spiral arms, or they hadn't spread yet, or my view was from the side. I guess the two fans are from LOX vents on either side of the stage, so-called non-propulsive vents. As the stage rotates, the fans form a spiral. Anyway, it was pretty cool!

We demand to see this shot in full resolution from launch through fairing separation!!!

Using please and thank you...
Please, we ask to see this shot in full resolution from launch through fairing separation!!!
Thank you.

Elon and Tim are pretty close so I think Tim's way of putting it is just humorous and not disrespectful.

SpaceX teams have already secured Falcon 9 B1052 before it is brought to the Hangar.

LInk to the Cruise Critic Internet Forum on this topic with maps.

https://boards.cruisecritic.com/topic/2827556-harmony-just-caused-space-x-launch-cancellation/page/2/
Thanks for the link.  It is interesting to see non-space nerd perspectives on this happening.
Those people were even more harsh on the captain than the crowd here.

There was understandable confusion on why SpaceX didn't abort earlier.
I guess they don't talk about instantaneous launch windows/ subcooled propellant over at cruisecritic  ;-).

I realized Harmony of the Seas was a big (over rowboat sized) but at 226,963 tonnes, it is twice the displacement of a nuclear aircraft carrier.

vesselfinder.com locks the max/min draft values, but maybe the skipper didn't turn due south(ish) from the Port Canaveral Channel due to draft concerns?
