From Xinhua, China Exclusive: China plans to launch dark matter probe.

Chinese scientists are planning to launch a dark matter probe satellite by the end of this year, researchers with the project announced on Friday.

The dark matter particle explorer (DAMPE) satellite will observe the direction, energy and electric charge of high-energy particles in space in search of dark matter, said Chang Jin, chief scientist of the project, at a press briefing held by the Shanghai Engineering Center for Microsatellites (SECM).

All key components of the satellite have been tested and are functioning well, and it is expected to launch from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center by the end of this year, the SECM said.

Saw that on another site and seems to have rather come out of nowhere, was it on any prior known program maps?

IIRC it was in the plans of the Chinese Academy of Sciences for at least 4-5 years already, if not more...though like their other science satellite programs the details are too murky for me to be interested.  ::)

(they also have an X-ray astronomy satellite that is supposed to go up this year, like the Japanese & Indians)

Thanks. I do remember vaguely seeing something about the X-Ray satellite.

Here's a paper that describes DAMPE as well as other Chinese science satellites.

I tried to enter the competition, but I keep getting an "illegal character" error message. :-( The first prize is a trip to see the launch.

I would like the title be adapted to "DAMPE - CZ-2D - JSLC - December, 18 2015", to be consistent with other threads. Thanks!

One of my friends said,there were some problems occurred to the DAMPE satellite.If they can't solve it in time,owing to the busy launch schedule in JSLC at the end of this year,this satellite may delay to next year.

Apparently the launch is still on for December. DAMPE will be sent to Jiuquan on November 14.

Page code fragment:

var end = new Date('12/16/2015 11:30 PM'

Only question - is it Bejing or GMT?

My current time: dec 5, 00:05  +  Countdown timer: 11days 23hrs 24mins 48secs = dec 16, 23:30 -timezone UTC+2 = 2130UTC

Apparently they have messed up and it shows different time to different timezones. University of Geneva should be UTC+1 so the "var end = new Date('12/16/2015 11:30 PM');" should put it as 2230utc.
