Per L2, SpaceX has March 27 (Window 1658-2058 Eastern) *Range Approved* for the SES-10 launch on the historic Falcon 9R 1021 (re-)launch!
Big ask. Need the 39A shakedown report concluded following the EchoStar 23 launch. That would be some turnaround.

That happened quickly. Booster up on 39A.
Sry just had my phone to get a screenshot.
-
Two hours until the window opens for the Static Fire. No documented/official change to the launch date, but per the non-documented* claim from a person in r/SpaceX (discussed in the discussion thread) of a one day slip, that did become a potential scenario per how tight the margins are for this flow since they moved to a Monday static fire.
First thing's first - Static Fire - good test on the data review....then they head into LRR for the launch date (they'll have to book the Range, so that'll come before the LRR. They did have Thursday already pre-booked as a back up date, however). Oh and of course, to add - when the Static Fire is complete, SpaceX usually tweet confirmation of a good test and the launch target, so that'll be likely when Thursday becomes official.
*That's how you class an individual person's comments, over actually seeing a schedule. Just as we do ourselves (Example yesterday: Static Fire delay on Sunday note from two people in L2 an hour or so before local media sites ran with it. Seeing it written down adds confidence to the info).

Couple updates from SES press briefing just now:
- They are running right up on the timeline to make the 30th because once the Falcon 9 and integrated payload are vertical at 39A, they need 13 hours to check out the spacecraft. Might be a slip to 3–31.
- The launch window was shortened to 1800 – 2030 EDT not because of the vehicle or SpaceX, but because the FAA didn't want to close down airspace for a 4hr launch window.
-
According to the 45th Space Wing (http://www.patrick.af.mil) the launch window start on Thursday has moved to 6:27pm local time.
(I posted in discussion initially as their tweet talked about orbit time, but seems they mean launch.)
-
Weather now 80% GO on Thursday but still only 40% on delay day.
Hope SpaceX can keep to their challenging timeline.
-
According to SFN update, currently still on track for launch Thursday:

SpaceX is targeting launch of the SES-10 mission today, Thursday, March 30th, from Launch Complex 39A (LC-39A) at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
The SES-10 mission will mark a historic milestone on the road to full and rapid reusability as SpaceX attempts the world’s first reflight of an orbital class rocket. Falcon 9’s first stage for the SES-10 mission previously supported a successfull space station cargo resupply mission for NASA in April 2016.
The launch window opens at 6:27 pm EDT or 10:27 pm UTC, and the launch will be broadcast live at www.spacex.com/webcast beginning at approximately 6:07 pm EDT or 10:07 pm UTC. For more information, visit www.spacex.com.

Congratulations, SpaceX! A small but very important piece of spaceflight history has been accomplished.
Congrats as well to SES, the spacecraft manufacturer, the Eastern Range, "DockX" crews manning the recovery vessels and all involved.
Very exciting times to be a space fan.
-
For me, this was the most nerve racking and emotional launch that I think I have ever watched. The feeling at MECO was nothing short of elation. It *works*. Reuse is actually possible.
More than ten years ago when I joined this forum, my very first post was a question about first stage reuse. This was way back before propulsive vertical landing became a serious proposition. Recovery and reuse was a theory; today it became a fact.
-
Wonderful, wonderful!! Pieces will go to SES's boardroom. Any guess if this one is kept for history?
-
Congrats to SpaceX and all of their future spaceflight innovations!
-
"Looks like we're where we want to be!"
Congrats and wow!
And I'll take advantage of my one post to also comment:
He looked at his screen for a bit and then said "good enough orbit". That 'enough' is enough to make me worry.
-
Webcast ending.
Congratulations to SpaceX and SES for successful launch, successful launch of a recovered liquid first stage and successful recovery of said stage!
-
First day of the rest of our (space fanatic) lives!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SpaceX changed everything.
You guys ROCK.
-
Congratulations! Huge day. Inspiring.

Absolutely incredible. Congratulations to everyone at SpaceX and SES on an excellent and flawless launch, landing, AND successful payload insertion.
It is truly amazing the rate at which things have moved in the last four years... Mars here we come!
-
Wow! Congratulations so much to all involved!! This is just fantastic.
We are so much closer to rapid reusable flight to space. This opens so many doors, it's mind boggling. ;D
Will be hard to sleep tonight. :D
-
Amazing.. Congratulations SpaceX. Now to try and get some sleep.....

Congratulations to SpaceX on the first ever successful reuse (and recovery!) of a first stage! Many happy returns!
-
Great day for SpaceX and space. 15 years in the making. Congratulations, truly incredible.
-
Congratulations SpaceX! May you continue to succeed in all your endeavors!
-
Amazing, simply amazing. Elon and SpaceX may be widely optimistic on dates at times, but they always deliver in the end.
Many, many congratulations. So pleased it landed successfully again too, the data from re-examining the booster will be invaluable.
Much kudos to SES for taking the calculated risk and wanting to push the industry forward. Thank you!
-
Oh. My. God!!!!
Well done Spacex. Thanks to SES for their belief.
Welcome to the age of re-use ;D ;D 8)
-
Absolutely amazing, fantastic work by everyone involved in today's launch. SpaceX made a big deal about this on stream, and I'm inclined to agree with them - this really does feel like quite the amazing leap.
If nothing else, this alone is a milestone in launch vehicle economics. Even if SpaceX never makes refurbishment any faster than the 4 months they needed for this one, they're still better off than they were - that said, I think we've got a lot of improvement to anticipate.
To summarize my thoughts...
-
Well done Mr. Musk. Congratulations!
-
Congrats to SpaceX and SES, thanks Steven Pietrobon and everyone
-
That was really awesome, congrats to Elon and everyone at SpaceX on a truly historic accomplishment.
-
Well done, again!
-
Congratulations SpaceX!
Wow! I'm getting that 'finally things are moving forward' vibe (no offence to the accomplishments of Mr. Bezos and his team!). Shame it's only taken 25 years to feel it again :'(
Onward and upward!
-
Historic day. Expect other players to follow! :)
-
This one deserves congratulations. History has been made again! Well done SpaceX, we're one step closer.
I loved Musk's statement at the end. "A huge revolution in spaceflight, It's been 15 years, a long time, lot of difficult steps along the way, incredibly proud of the SpaceX team, a milestone. Proving that something can be done that many people said was impossible"
Amen to that.
-
Dragged my wife in to watch this one on the big screen. Awesome! Congrats to SpaceX, Elon and SES for vision and guts!
-
Congrats SpaceX! You made my day and many other with this historic launch of a booster that had already flown and landed. Thank you for advancing mankind into the next era of spaceflight and exploration!
-
Launch, Land, Repeat!
Truly amazing to finally see reuse being achieved for the very first time ever.
Congrats to all the amazing people behind this historic moment!! And keep up the amazing work you all are doing. Truly inspiring and captivating!
Thanks for being a force of inspiration and passion rather then pure greed and selfishness.
Go SpaceX!
-
A lot of dreams riding on this launch and what an awesome ride!
Thank You SpaceX!
-
Amazing to watch history being made! Perfect flight and landing. Congrats to everyone at SpaceX and others involved!
-
Wow. Just wow. Even Elon was a bit emotional. Well done everyone on this historic day.
Thanks to Chris/Chris/Steven and everyone else.
-
Hugely impressive feat.
Looking forward to 5 more this year!
Congrats to all involved today and in the last 15 years to get here.
-
Congrats to SpaceX, SES and everyone involved with making this historic launch happen!
-
Congratulations SpaceX, and thank you for continuing to work to hand the inner solar system over to our kids.
-
It is not hyperbole to say that there is a before and an after this day in the history of Humanity. After the Wright Brothers' third (and only proper) flight on December 17th 1903 their Wright flyer was turned over and crushed by a gust of wind, never to fly again. Only much later, at Huffman Prairie, did the Wrights start regularly taking off and landing and taking off again.
If the December 2015 SpaceX first stage landing was a Kitty Hawk moment of spaceflight, showing that recovery of a first stage was possible, then today is a Huffmann Prairie moment, where a dependable and reusable space launch system is first proven feasible.
-
AWESOME FLIGHT!
Big congrats to everyone at SpaceX for working 15 years to finally make that happen today.
Congrats to SES, the range,
Congrats to everyone at NSF, SFN, Youtube and everyone else who helped cover this.
Bonus screenshots: Ever wondered what it looks like to stare up a rocket's nozzle at the moment of ignition? ;)
-
Absolutely incredible! Congratulations to SpaceX, Susan, and all involved! Great job SFN keeping the site up! Just speechless!
-
F9 has now flown twice as often as any other rocket this year- another first for SpaceX.
-
Congratulations SpaceX!
Way to go 1021!
Another moment in history for 39A..
-
Congratulations to all concerned on this historic launch and landing.
Third time around anyone.
-
Amazing accomplishment. Huge congratulations to SpaceX for pulling this off. And thanks to SRS for being willing (and eager) to take the leap of faith.
-
Congratulations to the awe-inspiring team at SpaceX, who work tirelessly to lift routine, aircraft-like spaceflight operations further up the scale of Clarke's Law of Revolutionary Ideas:
(1) "It's completely impossible — don't waste my time";
(2) "It's possible, but it's not worth doing";
(3) "I said it was a good idea all along."
-
This is one of those 'Do you remember what you were doing when this happened?' moments.
Gonna need a bigger hat for this hat tip!
-
Congrats to SpaceX. You can drop the Mic now Elon....
-
F9 has now flown twice as often as any other rocket this year- another first for SpaceX.
So has 1021
-
Thanks to all the team at NSF for superb coverage.
Congrats to SES for having the stones. To the SpaceX teams for getting this done, and to Elon, (who looked a little rough around the edges) for persevering to realise his dream, and to all of humanity... the cost of access to space has been lowered.
-
Excellent work SpaceX, keep it up!
-
Congrats to SpaceX, Elon Musk and everyone that has ever worked for this to become reality, an worthy mention to SES for the awesome support and faith provided and not least, NSF and every space enthusiast.
And if in 15 years they revolutionized space launch beginning from scratch I have no doubt that a Mars colony in another 15 years is possible.
We are living in the true Space Age!
-
My first congratulatory post--this launch was worth it!
I think if anything, the comments on today's achievement have been understated so far. While there are still many questions to answer about how rockets will continue to evolve, I hope this day will be one that's noted as a tipping point for attitudes and approaches towards access to space in the coming years.
Huge thanks to everyone at SpaceX for making it happen, as this could not have happened without years of dedication and effort. Huge thanks to Elon for forging ahead with an optimistic vision through much opposition in a sometimes dark world. And, huge thanks to everyone here at NSF for taking us lurkers along for the ride as we all watched and tried to figure out whether it could ever happen.
-
Perfect SpaceX Beautiful Re-Flight & Landing...Congrats
-
The nearly impossible becomes "nominal." Congratulations! to all involved in this historic flight and recovery.
-
Thank you SpaceX for this spacial moment in spaceflight history! In Elon We Trust! :D
Congrats to everyone involved. Kudos to SES for the nerves.
-
Congratulations to SpaceX, SES & all the support folk everywhere who contributed to this historic event. Congrats also to Chris and the NSF team for super coverage and great memories for the future.
-
With adrenaline rushes like that, who needs sport?!
Huge congratulations to SpaceX and Mr Musk, and massive thinks to those on this site for producing superb coverage.
We live in the future!
-
Big grats to everyone at Spacex! The glowing waffleiron was a nice bonus too, coupled with the incredible videoquality all the way to separation, ive never seen it soo clear all the way from vehicle to launchsite.
This day also remind me of all the reuse-possible/impossible discissions ive read over the past years, and all the "it cant be done" threads grinded to dust one by one. It feels liberating!
Again hugs to everyone at Spacex and the crew at NSF
-
Incredible moment! Congratulations to SpaceX for dreaming and making this a reality, the Air Force, FAA and range for accepting the risk and supporting this moment, SES for having confidence in being the fir mover, and Airbus for supplying the payload and adapting to this new set of requirements.
-
Congratz to SpaceX, SES, all involved, and ummmm congratz humanity on entering a new era of space access. :D
Great coverage NSF. Thanks!
Someone call the S2 production manager and tell him to ramp it up!
-
Congrats to everyone involved! This was a historic success, and a huge amount of hard work went into it.
-
Bravissimi !
SpaceX just made the history.
I was there watching even in 1969.
-
It's a magnificent set of dice SpaceX has built, and many thanks and congratulations to SES and SpaceX for taking the chance on rolling them.
1021: the first of many -- long may it fly.
(Though I'd guess it'll get the JCSat-14 treatment, so it may not actually fly again. The sentiment stands. ;-) )
-
Amazing, huge congratulations to the whole SpaceX team. :)
A historic launch (& re-landing), but only the beginning! 8)
-
Well, I can't add anything to the congratulatory messages that have already been posted. Congratulations to SpaceX, SES, the 45th Space Wing, NSF, and any others who were involved that I left out.
It's only right and proper that LC-39A was the launch site for this historic flight.
As I've said before, I'm old enough to have watched Gemini and Apollo flights, and the Space Age is just starting to get interesting!
-
Congratulations SpaceX!!! So cool to witness history like that.
I had to chuckle a little when they first showed the stage. it was like "huh...I guess thats where the conspiracy theorists get their CGI theory from. Empty deck one minute, F9 sitting there all pretty the next" ;D
-
Incredible! that was just awesome to watch!!
Huge congratulations to everyone involved with this launch.
hats off to SES for having the confidence in spaceX to put their satellite on the first reused booster to fly. that leap of faith had pay off big style for SES, that has to be some seriously good pr!!
-
Congratulations SpaceX!!!
-
Faget: We really need to get behind a really sensible first stage that's completely reusable and piggyback off of that event [till] you get the capability to have a two-stage reusable vehicle.
Slade: That you could reuse over and over again and get it back.
Faget: Over and over again with virtually no changes, only the same kind of maintenance you might do on an airplane. - Max Faget, Shuttle Designer. (https://www.jsc.nasa.gov/history/oral_histories/FagetMA/FagetMA_6-18-97.htm)
Congratulations SpaceX! You fulfilled a dream of many!
-
Elon presser. Chris Gebhardt is there for us, coming up shortly!
Chris will post highlighted info in here.
We'll quote and copy across into relevant threads after the event. Keeping it all in this thread for now.
-
I am at the post-launch press conference with Elon Musk and Martin Halliwell. I will post audio later and will live text updates here. Presser starting "soon."
-
Congratulations, SpaceX. Can't wait to see what they do next! I've been watching since the very beginning but this is my first congrats post on NSF. Can't think of a better occasion for it.
-
Congratulations to SpaceX and SES for a succesfull mission!
And...for this historic moment of reuse. That many more reuses may happen!
-
1min to presser start... -ish.
-
Just pure awesome! Big congratulation from Sweden to SpaceX, SES and everyone else involved in supporting todays launch!
Time for me to get some sleep :)
-
Elon and Martin are here.
-
Elon: Hey. So... pretty exciting.
-
Elon: Represent culmination of 15 years of work.
-
Elon: Stage 1 reps 75% of cost of flight. Reusing cost reduction potential is over a factor of 100.
-
Elon: This means humanity can become a spacefaring civilization. So... yeah!
-
Martin: AOS of sat. Just were we want to be. Everything was perfect. To be part of historic new day for spaceflight is tremendous.
-
Elon: Thank you to SES. This isn't the first time you've taken a chance with us.
-
Martin: You've got to decouple the engineering from the emotion. Engineering team at SpaceX is second to none.
-
The goal post movers and naysayers really have their work cut out for them now. Big congratulations to Elon, SpaceX, SES, NSF, and all the Believers. Finally and truely, a change we can believe in!
-
Marcia Dunn: Will you refly this booster? Next flight of reuse booster.
Musk: Several reflights scheduled for later this year. Might fly as many as 6 reflights this year. FH two side boosters are being reflown. That will be interesting mission on FH... hopefully in good direction. This core will have historic value. Seeing if Cape might like to have it as something to remember the moment. Present it as gift to cape
-
Bill Harwood: What message does this mission give to competitors.
Musk: I think hopefully this will inform the decisions of other space orgs. Thought it was impossible. We've shown it works. To be competitive, it will be necessary for others to do the same. Aircraft reusability analogy.
-
Irene Klotz: Do you have other costumers that weren't as brave as SES that are now signed up? What is life-limiting factor?
Musk: NASA has been supportive. Commercial, SES has been most supportive. Next thing is how to achieve rapid reuse without major hardware changeouts. Aspirations of zero hardware changes and 24hrs reflight.
-
ELon: Oh you look at it. We'll have a day.
-
WaPo question: What do you think of others working toward reusability?
Musk: What's that saying about flattery? Honestly, it's all good and everyone should do it. It's the wise move.
-
BREAKING news: Payload fairing LANDED SUCCESSFULLY. Fairing has thruster systems and steerable parachute. Was just shown pic of intact fairing floating in ocean.
-
Musk: Upper stage reuse is next.
-
WaPo: How does this fit in to plans to get to Mars. Refly boosters with people on board?
Musk: This is critical part of Mars plan. Goal of Mars plan is not a single mission but to establish a self-sustaining city on Mars.
-
Steven Clarke: Do you have customers signed up for reused rocket flights? Where is FH?
Musk: Yes. Excluded FH, there are three or four more this year signed up on contingency basis. Think we'll see more customers in future. FH sounded easy; actually no, crazy hard. Required redesign of center core. Done with testing. Cores are in final prep. Finished in 2-3 months. LAte summer launch.
-
James Dean: How confident were you going in to count? Flight rate to make reuse pay off?
Musk: Celebration is in order. Economics start being sensible next year. Confidence? I had about two boxes of xanax. I was oddly calmer than I should have been.
-
Question about facility at cape for and robot from Lauren.
Refurb facility at cape. Most refurb done at launch site. It's like a forest of rocket boosters. If most of our 20 remaining flights this year land, we're gonna need a big hanger.
The robot on barge... in order to secure rocket remotely, we can't put people on barge when rocket's sliding around. Droids are to remotely secure legs of rocket even in high seas.
When will we see it in action? A: Next few months.
-
Musk: We have one landing in stormy seas where only thing the kept rocket from falling overboard as it slid around barge was lip on barge.
-
Musk: Hope to provide update to ITS/BFR soon. Come up with number of design refinements. Update on ITS on website in next month or so.
First ITS will be uncrewed.
-
Musk: Goal is to get people on Mars before we're dead and company is dead. LOL
-
Forbes: Price discount?
Musk: Trying to figure that out. It will be a meaningful reduction. Will first have to payoff price of reusability development. Will be less than current price of our rockets and far lower than any other rocket in the world.
-
Question from France: How many times can stages be reused?
Musk: Design intent is that rocket can be reflown with ZERO hybrid changes 10 times. Then with moderate refurb, 100 times. We can make it 1,000, but there's no point in that. ITS will be 1,000 reflights.
-
Musk: New design coming for Grid Fin. Will be largest titanium forging in the world. Current Grid Fin is aluminum and gets so hot it lights on fire... which isn't good for reuse.
-
Brendan Bryne (NPR): Anything you're worried about?
Musk: Looked a telemtry up and down. It all looks really good. Eyeballing it, other things to address to replace TPS on grid fins and base heat shield and repaint where needed.
-

For F9 entry, M8 to M1 heating difference is 500 times difference.
-
Martin talking about how this wasn't a risk. Tech had worked through this. People apply emotion to situation and equating that to risk.
-
SES spokesperson talking about reuse. (Arghh, Vertical Video Syndrome (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Bt9zSfinwFA)!)
-
Do you feel vindicated at this date.
Musk: Yeah, I was speechless when it happened. It's a great day.
-
Martin: After SES-8, I predicted people would be shaking in their boots, and they are today.
-
This one we thought it'd be nice to keep at Cape. Other will... well, they'll be at the Cape, too. Just flying a lot.
-
Quite a lot of history from 39A.
Musk: Yeah, like Times Square. When NASA let us lease their pad, it was an incredible honor. Coolest launch location I can think of. This wasn't part of plan to lease 39A. This came up, and we were like "hell yeah."
-
How can today open new doors to space?
Reduction in cost of access. Looking to next gen vehicle, the big rocket -- with code name BRF, Big... Falcon... Rocket -- that will be taking all of what we've learnt and creating something completely reusable.
100 fold reduction to cost... maybe more...
-
Chris, can you ask about block 4/5 upgrade timeline/changes?
-
With reuse an option, how to decide?
Customers willing to take flight proven booster.
-
Maybe 12 reflights next year.
-
Next year double the number of flights. Eventually, 3/4 will be reflights.
-
Elon to ChrisGebhardt: "You really understand the details."
-
Question from Chris!
Getting 40 up and running. Falcon Heavy is a high risk flight. 27 engines lighting simultaneously. Thought of calling it the Falcon 27. Launch FH from 39A. Block V, is more like a point upgrade. Falcon 9 v1.5. Ugrading the engines to their full thrust capability, by 7-10%. Forged Titanium grid fins. Incorporate a number of upgrades important to NASA.
-
Me: How does Block 5 fit into more reusability. And FH in summer, is that a good indicator of when 40 will be back as FH would go before then.
Elon: Wow. Yes, you're right. Need to get 40 up and running to do single stick flights there and FH from 39A. FH is a high risk flight. 27 engines lighting simultaneous. Technically is should be called Falcon 27. But that sounds too scary.
Bock 5 nomenclature, we're using wrong terminology. It's more like version 2.5 of F9. Block 5 most important part is op engines at highest thurust cap -- 10% more than what they currently run at -- and more reusability (grid fins). Also updates for human spaceflight.
-
Elon compliments Chris G on his knowlege! Attaboy, way to make NSF proud! :)
-
Ok folk. The presser caught us unaware - and we were already into the one post of congrats each - part of the live thread. But everyone understood that was more important at the time and we have a nice stream of Q&A posts in succession via Chris G without interruptions. Many thanks!
One post of congrats is back, but yep - any questions, responses and so on....into the other associated threads. Thanks :)
-
What can anyone say?! Heartiest congratulations to SpaceX and all associated!
Congrats as well to 1021 herself, although she's had her ups and downs....
-
Wow. A big congratulations to SpaceX and SES!
On April 12, 1981 I was a kid, in elementary school, watching a small black and white TV in my family cabin in the White Mountains (Arizona). I watched STS-1 launch from Pad 39A on the grainy screen with poor reception and that weekend my imagination was running wild as I played with a die cast shuttle toy my grandpa had got me.
Today I watched the SES-10 launch from Pad 39A on an iPad Pro with about the same screen size, light enough to hold in my hand. My imagination is running wild about what can happen in the next few years and decades as I am having dinner after work, thumbing through NSF.com posts.
Although the Shuttle didn't completely fulfill its promise, it did open up a new era of space activity and was critical to building the ISS and servicing the Hubble Telescope while flying a large number of people into space. 36 years later it looks like a brand new era in space flight has arrived.

Congratulations to SpaceX, SES, Elon, and everyone involved!
I had to go with family to the grocery store, so I was the guy at Harris Teeter Starbucks with his eyes glued to Youtube on his phone.
From the moment the first booster landed, I knew reuse was possible. Now SpaceX has shown it was inevitable.
-
Lovely! 8)
-
The engineering vs. emotions thing was really something, wasn't it? I had to remind myself to breathe occasionally from liftoff to MECO, not because I lacked confidence in the engineering team at SpaceX, just feeling the weight of the moment.
So, congratulations SpaceX, SES, and everyone else. Thanks to NSF, et al, for the great coverage. And you go, Chris G. making yourself and the site look well-informed as everyone here helps us try to be. ;D
-
Awesome, congrats Spacex. Btw does anyone know when the next reused rocket will go up?
-
Awesome, awesome achievement. World-class congratulations to SpaceX, Elon Musk and the entire SpaceX team. And a big thumbs up to SES for being the first to step up and say "Hell ya we'll take the re-flight ride". You guys are awesome.
-
Well done Space-x and all.
Having seen humans land on the moon live , this was almost as good.

Wow! What a great day! Really awesome to witness history. Can't wait to see what this breakthrough holds for the future in terms of reusability spaceflight.
-
Big congrats to SpaceX, Eastern Range and all others for the dramatic relaunch and landing of core 21 and the successful deployment of SES-10.
8)
-
Well done to the spacex family. The entire ride was enthralling.
My 2 and 4 year olds were screaming aloud with the spacex employees "GO FALCON 9"
Just brilliant.
-
Musk: We have one landing in stormy seas where only thing the kept rocket from falling overboard as it slid around barge was lip on barge.
Nice to hear direct from the horses mouth that my analysis and speculation about the Thaicom Walkabout last year was spot on! 8)
It seems that one and probably two legs have compressed crush cores allowing a good pendulum teetering action to develop and increase in amplitude by further compressing the cores with the continuous rocking on deck. That bigger teeter caused incremental sliding toward the most compressed leg with each jarring stop, arrested only by the yellow I beam railing around the deck edge.
Whoever first came up with the idea for that railing around the ASDS deserves a serious attaboy from Elon. That saved the rocket from walking overboard.
-
I watched core 1021 on CRS-8 launch live whilst flying with Don Gates, saw the first pictures after we landed of the successful stage sitting there beautifully on OCISLY. I was at McGregor last July to witness first hand the first full duration ~2.5mins test of a reused booster (JCSAT-14 I think) and have taken pictures of the first core to land back at LZ-1. I cannot wait to be in Florida for FH and to see both boosters return! Congrats to SpaceX for not listening to the naysayers, for pushing the boundaries and to SES for believing in the dream and becoming a part of history, Congrats also to NSF and Chris B too as without this site/them I wouldn't have had the opportunity to witness any of the above.
What an absolutely wonderful day!
-
Well done to all involved.
Now, not to put too fine a point on it, but time to turn it all around and launch again in about 2 weeks, albeit on a different booster. Steady launch cadence, here we come!
-
CONGRATULATIONS. I'm very pleased to see that this finally happened. Plus fairing recovery too!
-
Thanks for a completely new lease and face on space!
Look forward to the future you have created!
-
Congratulations to everyone involved with this historic mission. This was a fun launch to run a parody account for (Pad 39A).

It's all over the news here: :)

http://www.smh.com.au/business/innovation/spacex-pulls-off-first-reused-rocket-mission-in-triumph-for-elon-musk-20170330-gvakh7.html
..including the oft-used line: "Gwynne has promised us parts of the rocket," said SES Chief Technology Officer Martin Halliwell. "We want them for the SES board room."
-
Congrats SpaceX. I watched it with my 8 year old daughter, and she said if it blew up on landing she was going to cry. After it landed, she said if she was at Hawthorne, she would be screaming her head off. The realization that she knew what was at stake and how it would change the world makes me a proud dad. 'Merica.
-
Flawless relaunch of a F9 booster. Picture perfect mission.
This amazing accomplishment leaves me with just one thought, the Daft Punk song:
One more time !
One more time !
One more time !
I gonna celebrate !
Oh yeah, all right
Don't stop the dancing !
A toast for this to become routine !
-
Thanks, congratulations to Mr. E. Musk and his vision. Today was an historic first, and I am referring to the fairing recovery, I hope we will have more details soon. From the engineering point of view the second flight and landing on the barge were not really a surprise, as the SES person said. But the fairing recovery was what I have been hoping for years! What a dream become reality!
-
Congratulations once again to SpaceX and to Elon Musk. Fairing half recovery. Seriously? That man, Mr. Musk, what is one to say? He leads.
- Ed Kyle
-
Congratulations to Space X and all involved!
A truly epic day in spaceflight.
We now live in a world where expendable boosters are no longer the way forward or even acceptable.
-
I'm with ed. There's nothing left to say. Historical first reflight.... Plus fairing recovery is crazy. Wow.
Elon's ability to take risk and make it his (dog) is second to none.
Congrats SpX. You've earned that place in the history books.
-
What a day! I've been celebrating tonight with grilled steaks and beer. So I hope this congratulatory post makes sense to everyone here at NSF, because I think most of the people here are at least as enthused as I am about today's spectacular launch!
Almost 3 years ago, I first joined the NSF community to learn as much as I could about the crazy new commercial launch provider that was attempting to develop a RE-USABLE rocket, in an era of spaceflight stagnation. I spent hours poring through the massive video restoration thread, watching as the landmark clip of a rocket stage firing its engines and deploying landing gear above the atlantic was painstakingly salvaged from an (almost!) hopelessly mangled mpeg file.
Today feels like the culmination of SpaceX's efforts. Irrefutable proof that re-use is not only possible, but that it is THE next step forward for spaceflight.
Even if SpaceX doesn't realize its ultimate goal of taking humanity to Mars, I think history will show that today's relaunch & landing is a watershed moment for space travel. Every government agency and commercial space provider will now seriously invest in re-usable spaceflight systems, if they weren't convinced already. Elon Musk was right when he said that this is necessary if we aspire to be multi-planetary as a species.
I am grateful to NSF for the continuous, dedicated, intelligent coverage of all things related to space exploration. It is one of a few sites that I visit daily. It is my antidote for depressing political news coverage. It is a daily dose of optimism, much needed.
Congratulations to SpaceX for today's milestone - and succesfull fairing recovery as the cherry on top!
Congratulations and thank you to SES for taking a chance on a flight proven rocket!
Kudos to NASA, because they have been supportive of SpaceX's endeavors every step of the way - as Elon Musk acknowledges at every opportunity. So cool that the launch happened at 39-A. Hallowed ground indeed!
-

That was the most amazing press conference I've ever seen. Way to go Chris G!
What a day...
-
Congratulations to Elon Musk and everybody at SpaceX! Wow, glad to witness history. This is the stuff we will tell our kids about!
Launch & Land & Re-launch!
-
The future began today. Congratulations SpaceX and E. Musk.
-
Congratulations SpaceX. Thanks for continuing to push the envelope (and the industry). That everything proceeded routinely and with no drama or fanfare (at least visible to us outside observers) is causing me a bit of cognitive dissonance, but is the greatest compliment I can think of.
-
SpaceX: Wow, one more milestone. You made it look easy!
NSF: Thank you Chris B and Steve for the simulcast coverage with the livestream! But Chris G you were the real stand out today throughout the launch, historical landing and that amazing presser. Glad you were there!
-
A watershed day in the history of spaceflight. And they snuck in fairing recovery to boot. Musk is a real visionary.
-
What a wonderful gift!
Today's historic re-launch and re-landing made my millenium... though I'll be arguing for weeks against my tinfoil-hat brother about the camera blackout of the landing itself... even a CGI artist apparently can be fooled into thinking that it's impossible to land a rocket like god and Heinlein intended!
Go SpaceX!

How great is that?! Super mega congratulations to Spacex, NASA, and everyone involved. Big thank you to NSF Chris G Chris B and co. for covering this so well. Amazing history making moment, somebody finally managed to re-use a first stage and land it TWICE. How cool is that!
This is the start of a new era here is to hoping the development path continues to improve this stuff. No longer a theory, IT CAN BE DONE!!!

-
Congratulations SpaceX! We all hoped this day would finally come, and now it is here. What an amazing time to be alive.
-
Wow! I've been a member here since 2005, and have watched SpaceX go from just another "powerpoint" company to a player that has rocked the world-wide space industry.
Congratulations to them, their customers, KSC/CCAFS and everybody else!
Congratulations to Chris B., NSF and again, Chris G., for the great coverage!
-
Congrats to SpaceX on making history. Now we'll see what cheap access to space does for space business and exploration.
-
Congratulations to the SpaceX team!
Carl Sagan ended "Pale Blue Dot" with the stunning line "Sailors on a becalmed sea, we sense the stirring of a breeze." That breeze first stirred on 21 December 2015. This second stirring means that the breeze is real and that it will become stronger and stronger. The occasion was truly historic, on a par with that first warp flight in Star Trek : First Contact in terms of its implications for the future of spaceflight, access to space and living on other worlds.
-
Amazing that we all get to see this happening! Well done SpaceX! :-)
-
Awesome launch by SpaceX. Absolutely feee nominal.
And great work here at NSF to cover it all, with a shout-out to the instant knowledgeable coverage of the post-launch briefing.
Elon's used flight-proven rocket store arrives on the scene.
-
F9 has now flown twice as often as any other rocket this year- another first for SpaceX.
So has 1021
Oh, well played! :-)
So pleased that this went off without a hitch. It should have worked in theory, but "the difference between theory and practice is greater in practice than it is in theory".
Now, onwards to lower refurb times and becoming more and more routine.
Cheers, Martin
-
Well done to SpaceX for proving that the dream is possible. Now the challenge is to do it again and again and again until those cost savings start appearing on balance sheets!
-
Woo Hoo!
-
Huge congratulations to the whole SpaceX team that made this launch and landing a reality! That was a great one to be watching live. Please keep up the great work you're all doing.
Btw. It gave me a small chuckle when the announcer on the technical webcast nearly lost his cool voice when he announced that Falcon had landed (sounded like a somewhat suppressed elated shout :) ).
-
Huge congratulations to SpaceX and everyone who worked so hard to make this work.
As an engineer in a different industry I've found it incredibly inspiring to watch the tenacity of the SpaceX engineers as they tried, failed, tried again, failed a little less, achieved that first landing which then ultimately lead to this point. Many others would have given up long before now, but apparently the SpaceX team is made of sterner stuff. Bravo, and here's to many more!
-
Congratulations to the SpaceX team; to SES for taking a risk for the future, and to all those who had a part in this historic day.
But most of all, congratulations to Elon Musk. He said he was proud of the SpaceX team (and rightfully so), but it is his SpaceX team!
-
It was half past midnight here in Austria when HISTORY was made.
Congratulation to Elon and the teams he das assembled over the years.
Still a long way to go to 24h turnaround but if ANYbody can make it, SpaceX can do it.
And we should be thankful that they have not to deal with the quarterly sh*t of a public company.

That. was. amazing !!!
If anyone had the capability and motive to do it, it was spaceX, and now, thanks to Musk, we enter a new era for spaceflight, nothing less than that !!!

And did I hear second stage reusability was on the table ?!?
You are spoiling us, Elon !!!
I am at a loss for words, right now !!!

SES-10 launched successfully on SpaceX’s flight-proven Falcon 9 rocket
Written on 30 Mar 2017
SES-10 at 67 degrees West will provide direct-to-home broadcasting, enterprise
and mobility services across Latin America
KENNEDY SPACE CENTRE, FLORIDA, 30 MARCH 2017 -- SES (Euronext Paris and Luxembourg Stock Exchange: SESG) announces that the SES-10 satellite was successfully launched into space onboard a flight-proven SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket at 18:27 EST from NASA’s Kennedy Space Centre, Florida. SES-10 is the first geostationary commercial satellite to ever launch on a flight-proven first-stage rocket booster.
With a Ku-band payload of 55 36MHz transponder equivalents, of which 27 are incremental, the multi-mission spacecraft is the first SES satellite wholly dedicated to providing service to Latin America. SES-10's high-powered beams will augment SES’s capabilities across the region providing direct-to-home broadcasting, enterprise and mobility services.
SES-10 will replace capacity currently provided by other SES satellites at 67 degrees West, as well as bring additional capacity to Mexico, Central America, South America and the Caribbean.
Pursuant to an agreement with the Andean Community (Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru), the satellite will operate as the Andean Community’s Simón Bolivar 2 providing satellite capacity for each Andean Member State. The Andean satellite project comes from the shared Member States’ interests of having a common satellite network taking advantage of the Andean spectrum resources at 67 degrees West.
“The successful launch of SES-10 on SpaceX's first ever mission using a flight-proven rocket is opening up a new era of spaceflight. We are proud to have partnered with SpaceX on this journey of innovating and using reusable rockets that will make access to space more efficient in terms of cost and manifest management," said Martin Halliwell, Chief Technology Officer at SES. “The additional capacity offered by SES-10 is ideal for providing additional TV services with better picture quality as well as faster broadband services – both of which will be welcomed by millions of people throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.”
“We are thrilled to have achieved the successful launch of a flight proven Falcon 9. This is an historic milestone on the path to complete and rapid reusability,” said Gwynne Shotwell, President and COO at SpaceX “We are pleased to have accomplished this milestone with SES, which has been a strong supporter of SpaceX and innovation over the years.”
SES-10 is built by Airbus Defence and Space and is based on the Eurostar E3000 platform. The satellite will utilise an electric plasma propulsion system for on-orbit manoeuvres and a chemical system for initial orbit raising and some on-orbit manoeuvres.

Congratulations, SpaceX!
When I watched Apollo as a teenager, I was always impressed by how each mission built on the one before, but also included new stuff. Orbit the moon, then fly a LEM, then send a LEM to the moon, then land, then precision land, then a rover, etc. You could feel the frontier of the possible being pushed back as you watched. The first Space Shuttle felt like that too, a huge advance made in broad view. But then for decades progress seemed to slow. Lots of consolidation, lots of incremental progress (the Shuttle flew more people in a year than did Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo combined), but few seriously new ideas being tried.
But now SpaceX has brought back the excitement of trying new ideas. Sub-cooled LOX, AFTS, booster landings, re-use, fairing recovery, robots for securing - almost every launch tries something new. Some may work, and some not, but it's fun to watch again, as smart folks struggle with advancing a tricky technology. So thanks, SpaceX!

Here is my late congratulation to SpaceX and Elon Musk.
On 4 October 1957 History Changed! 60 Years Later, on 30 March 2017, SpaceX Changed History Again!
In only 15 years, Elon Musk with his SpaceX team accomplished what no other nation or company could accomplish in 60 years!
To launch a payload to orbit on a previously flown rocket and successfully land it again on a floating, moving platform at sea!
Imagine what SpaceX will do in the next 15 years? The next 60 years!
Thank You Elon for making the future exciting again! 8)

As of 18:57 UTC March 31, Space Track shows the following.
Falcon 9 R/B: 217 x 33,395 km x 26.31 deg
SES 10: 247 x 35,673 km x 26.18 deg
SFN gave a targeted 218 x 35,410 km x 26.2 deg insertion orbit.
It seems likely that SES 10 had already added some delta-v by the time of the tracking information. The Falcon 9 second stage probably had probably modified its original orbit slightly as well, via. blow down. I will note, however, that the Echostar 23 second stage shows a 35,795 km apogee, only about 108 km below that satellite's insertion apogee.

Here's the SES press release:
SES-10 Satellite Fully Operational over Latin America
Written on 15 May 2017
SES-10, the first satellite launched using a SpaceX flight-proven rocket, will provide direct-to-home broadcasting, enterprise and mobility services
LUXEMBOURG, 15 MAY 2017 -- SES (Euronext Paris and Luxembourg Stock Exchange: SESG) announced today that the SES-10 satellite is now fully operational at 67 degrees West and will be serving the thriving markets in the Latin America region.
SES-10 was launched on 30 March 2017 from NASA’s Kennedy Space Centre in Florida onboard a flight-proven SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The satellite is the first geostationary commercial satellite ever launched on a flight-proven first-stage rocket booster.
Since then, extensive in-orbit tests have confirmed the flawless functioning of the spacecraft.
SES-10 was built by Airbus Defence and Space and is based on the Eurostar E3000 platform. The multi-mission spacecraft is the first SES satellite dedicated to providing service to Latin America and has a Ku-band payload of 55 36MHz transponder equivalents, of which 27 are incremental. SES-10's high-powered beams will augment SES’s capabilities across the region and will provide direct-to-home broadcasting, enterprise and mobility services to Mexico, Central America, South America and the Caribbean.
Pursuant to an agreement with the Andean Community (Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru), the satellite will operate as the Andean Community’s Simón Bolivar 2, providing satellite capacity for each Andean Member State. The Andean satellite project came from the shared Member States’ interest in having a common satellite network to take advantage of the Andean spectrum resources at 67 degrees West.

It seems resilience to hurricanes is a possible blocker with AFs preferred CCAFS South Gate location. Also liked this above reminder of just how big F9 boosters are.

“Meet serial number 1021.
AKA CRS-8/SES-10”
"This one will be for the Air Force. Still determining where it will be displayed. There is another stored for the visitors center though."
Edit: added crucial text part containing most important info detail... :)
