Discussion thread for the next Starlink group launch from Vandenberg Space Force Base.

NSF Threads for Starlink Group 4-13: Discussion

Launch is May 13, 2022 at 22:07 UTC (3:07 pm PDT), on Falcon 9 1063-5 from SLC-4E. Booster landing anticipated on Of Course I Still Love You. Fairing recovery is expected from the water.

Payload: A batch of 53 Starlink satellites. Expected deployment orbit of approximately 306 x 316 km at 53.2 degrees inclination.

Please use the Starlink Discussion Thread for all general discussion on Starlink.

Check the Starlink Index Thread for links to more Starlink information.

From a previous mission's Press Kit:
Quote
Each Starlink satellite weights approximately 260 kg and features a compact, flat-panel design that minimizes volume, allowing for a dense launch stack to take full advantage of Falcon 9’s launch capabilities. With four powerful phased array and two parabolic antennas on each satellite ... At end of their life cycle, the satellites will utilize their on-board propulsion system to deorbit over the course of a few months. In the unlikely event their propulsion system becomes inoperable, the satellites will burn up in Earth’s atmosphere within 1-5 years, significantly less than the hundreds or thousands of years required at higher altitudes. Further, Starlink components are designed for full demisability.

Starlink is targeting service to near global coverage of the populated world by 2021. Additional information on the system can be found at starlink.com.

I'm not sure why the post says late March since there's not even an FCC permit for any Starlink launch from Vandy on March : /

I mean by that rule everything is NET today for example... As far as evidence shows, the next Starlink launch from Vandenberg may not happen until May.

NET March, according to NextSpaceflight

The FCC permit for Starlink launches are published around 1 month before the operations NET date.  There are still a few days for an FCC authorization to be published for a late March launch (if one is forthcoming).

The original news stated the Vandenberg Starlink launches could be circa once per month.  That didn't happen, but the capability exists.

SpaceX is expected to launch an average of one Starlink mission per month from Vandenberg over the next year,...

I got an reply from someone more knowledgeable than me.

And, I have a launch thread ready for what I thought could be the next Vandenberg orbital launch.

And why not before May?  Is SARah-1 launching from Vandenberg in the coming months?  NROL-85NROL-87?

NROL-85 is currently planned for launch in April. With no launches going up in March, the next opportunity is likely May at the earliest pending other launches going up or not.

SFN Launch Schedule update, March 25 (one of many):
Starlink 4-13 launch in May 2022 from Vandenberg SFB SLC-4E, with ASDS landing.

Cross-post

A barge returned two first stages from Long Beach to Vandenberg, 1071.2 and 1063.5.

1071.2 is intended for the April 15 launch of NROL-85.

I suspect that 1063.5 is intended for this launch.

I also suspect that there will be no Static Fire before a launch using 1063.5.

I've tracked this barge, and it would appear that SpaceX shipped two Falcon 9 boosters from the Port of Long Beach to Vandenberg Space Force Base yesterday.

No mention in yesterday's SpaceX NROL-85 launch webcast of the next Falcon 9 launch from Vandenberg--presumably this launch.

If it is the normal minimum between launches for VSFB is ~ 21 days. So a 8 May is possible. But possibly later. If an earlier launch of a non Starlink is needed in June then SpaceX would try to launch as soon as they can in May.

Will have to wait and see how things at VSFB shakes out.

Based on the assumption that this is the next Vandenberg Falcon 9 launch:
As there are two Falcon 9 first stages in use at Vandenberg, and as 1071.2 was just launched and recovered on April 17, I predict 1063.5 will be launched and recovered on this flight, with no Static Fire previously.

Edit May 11: 1063.5 confirmed.

Edit May 13: No Static Fire before successful launch and first stage recovery aboard OCISLY.

NROL-108 launched without doing a static fire.

A generic Hazardous Operations NGA notice, but it appears to be for this launch.  (It is typical for NGA notices for Vandy launches to be generic rather than "Rocket Launching".)  The time change from one day to the next is consistent with a mid-inclination Starlink launch.  But the hazard period on May 10 doesn't start until 22:36 UTC so the launch time would have to be after that.
