Lightyear

The story of the ‘real’ person who inspired the Buzz Lightyear toy. It’s worth it just to see Pixar doing a sci-fi action adventure film. This looks miles better than I was expecting with the space shots looking very well done.

Am I being too much of a nerd to wonder if this is in the same continuity as https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buzz_Lightyear_of_Star_Command or at some other meta level?  I can't tell from the trailer.

So the toy in a fictional movie is inspired by a "real" character in a fictional setting set far away in the future of when the original movie was set to take place?

Quote
Disney announced Lightyear last December, but I hadn’t actually spent any time thinking about it until the first trailer dropped this morning. It’s gritty and existential, with vibes somewhere between Interstellar and Ad Astra, backed by David Bowie’s “Starman.” It could almost be an entirely new sci-fi movie, except for Buzz’s green and purple space suit teased at the very end. It’s an origin story within an origin story, not for an action figure, but for the character who inspired it. In real life. But in a movie, which is fake. Truly we live in cursed times.

Yeah that's a big reach just to use the purple and green suit to keep the studio execs happy.

Trailer looks cool anywho.

You’re not the first to wonder that online that I’ve seen.

This must be the part where Buzz goes back in time to save George and Gracie.

Official trailer:

It looks very impressive and the image of the alien ship at least in the trailer looks like it could have come out one of the old sci-fi type images you used to see put out in books back in the seventies and eighties.

Okay, so Sci-Fi homages in the trailer:

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (as mentioned above)
Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back (Dagobah swamp)
Stargate (the rings he was flying through)
Contact (the launch structure)

anyone else spot anything?

The robots remind me of Warhammer's Astartes, armed with shock sticks resembling those seen in SW VII.

The song Starman by David Bowie, used in the Martian (2015), and a truly iconic soundtrack for lots of space operas and movies since its release in 1972.

The day Bowie became a star, on Top of the Pops:

The second trailer has just been released, unlike the first trailer it actually reveals something of the storyline. Looks like they are actually going for a slightly more realistic approach to travelling at light speed with time dilation of over sixty years from his one trip.

Saw it, liked it. Good story and moving. The eight year old kid decided otherwise and decided to be an obnoxious nuisance. C'est la vie, as we say in french.

The cat was awesome!! I wish my cat was that clever
With sufficient thrust, pigs fly just fine - however, this is not necessarily a good idea. It is hard to be sure where they are
going to land, and it could be dangerous sitting under them as they fly overhead.
