RDE demo on S-520 Flight 31
« on: 08/02/2021 12:52 am »
JAXA recently demoed an operating rotating detonation wave engine on the 31st flight of the S-520 sounding rocket. If I remember correctly, this was in the payload section, and pointing sideways (not downward).

Unfortunately, the naming is somewhat interchangeably used here, so it might be described as an RDE, RDWE, and what they call a detonation engine system (DES), which they claim is a combo of pulsed detonation engine and a RDE...

JAXA had a press release or the rotating detonation wave engine, which has a nifty picture of the RDWE firing for 6 seconds. A comanifested PDE experiment got 3 pulses?
