SES-17 and O3b mPOWER secured $180 million worth of backlog in 2021, according to SES, increasing their gross backlog to $740 million.

The company said these satellite launches had been pushed from the third quarter to the fourth quarter of this year, adding that it does not expect a significant change in operational service date as a result.

Delayed to Q4

Quote
Steve Collar, CEO of SES who also joined the virtual press event, said the company decided to launch mPOWER satellites in batches of three initially, even though it is possible to fit four on a Falcon 9.

“We’re still hoping we’ll get [the first three] off at the very end of this year,” Collar said.

“It might be touch and go. It could be a Christmas or a New Year gift.”

He added: “[T]hen the second three will launch sometime in the first quarter. And actually we have a little bit more oomph on the second launch, and that’ll allow the … two sets of satellites to get to orbit roughly at the same time — so, the middle of the year, and that’ll allow us to do a full orbital check out on the first six, which is what we will be basing kind of the launch service on.

“And then the … remaining satellites will get launched through 2022 and 2023.”

I'm wondering if this insertion altitude is a typo or not.  The FCC request is for NET December 16.

https://fcc.report/IBFS/SAT-STA-20211007-00130
Quote
O3b is scheduled to launch the first three of its next generation mPOWER satellites in December 2021, and the next
three in early 2022. The first three satellites will be launched from an insertion altitude of 300.3
km and the next three will be launched from 2,000.0 km. Once the satellites reach O3b’s
authorized operational altitude, O3b will test the communications payload on each satellite.

https://www.satellitetoday.com/launch/2021/12/30/top-satellite-launches-to-watch-in-2022/

Given that service planned for mid 2022 per https://twitter.com/pbdes/status/1447447523715686404
has in that article slipped to "by the end of the year" and SES website
https://www.ses.com/our-coverage/launches
says H2 2022 per scr00chy post 24 Dec above

I am a little sceptical of that Q2 2022, but what am I missing?

SES continues to hedge on the launch window for this mission:

SES absorbs SES Networks in streamlining effort [dated Jan. 18]

Quote
The operator has contracted SpaceX to launch the O3b mPOWER constellation on a total of four Falcon 9 rockets.

The first three satellites were slated to launch together on a Falcon 9 at the end of 2021, before being pushed to the first quarter of 2022 — however, SES vice president of external communications Suzanne Ong said the company is now “looking at Q1/Q2 2022” in an email.

SES is planning to launch two batches of its anticipated O3b mPOWER constellation in 2022. The first batch of three satellites is set to launch in the first quarter of 2022, and the second batch of three satellites in the second quarter 2022, SES confirmed to Via Satellite. The O3b mPOWER constellation will start service by the end of the year with those six satellites.

My next question: When will the first triplet be delivered to the Cape?

Add Feb 21: Will this be an ASDS landing?

Almost all large commercial satellites made in North America and launched from the Cape or Vandenberg go by truck, even before the current situation in Ukraine.

Which planes do they go on?  I rarely see any on an Antonov within North America.

DoD use C-5 Galaxy (at least two units have special mods for this purpose). Smaller ones could use whatever. I do know that we needed an AN-124 from Patagonia to the Cape (SAOCOM) and to Kourou (ARSAT). But those birds were huge and the distance was long like 4800 miles). But the smaller SAC-D (a collaboration with NASA) used a C-17 Globemaster.

I do not think that any expendable launches will be needed. The expendable launch was needed to enable the second batch of three reaching operational orbit faster, but with only two sats per launch, this is likely possible with reusable Falcons.

SES: O3b mPower delayed again, service to start Q2 2023 [...] (August 4, Space Intel Report)

Paywalled, but the free snippet has information about a delay of the first 3 launches to Q4:

Quote
Satellite fleet operator SES reported another delay in the deployment of its 11-satellite O3b mPower medium-Earth-orbit constellation, saying launches would not start until late this year.

SES said launches of the first six satellites, which will trigger the start of commercial operations, will occur on three SpaceX Falcon 9 launches between October and December.

Also, I noticed some days ago that the NextSpaceFlight, mPower 1 and 2 listings for the first three mPower pairs are all NET December.  Why?

[Same question, same answer for the first two WorldView Legion pair launches.]

In an interview published this week an SES exec says the satellites are just months from launch.  That really doesn't sound like 3 launches in Q4 to me.

Launch photography (16 Oct version) lists 4 launches from pad 40 in November: Galaxy 31 32, Hakuto-R/Rashid, Hotbird 13G and Eutelsat 10B.

Spaceflightnow lists O3B mPower 1&2 from pad 40.

So Nextspaceflight
https://nextspaceflight.com/launches/details/2599
seems justified in saying NET December

Ben Cooper's Launch Photography Viewing Guide, updated November 30 evening EST:
A Falcon 9 will launch a pair of internet satellites for SES on December TBD.

No mention of launch date or launch complex.
Shipment from California to Florida will most likely be by truck?

Important assumption:  That the notice does not refer to SES-18 and 19.

Boeing Delivers First Two O3b mPOWER Satellites to SES
- 702X-based satellites offer new technology that Boeing is delivering on commercial and government programs.
- Each satellite is equipped with more than 5,000 steerable, flexible beams capable of allocating power wherever it is needed – a first-of-its-kind capability.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif., Dec. 5, 2022— Over the weekend, Boeing [NYSE: BA] delivered the first two O3b mPOWER satellites to SES, a leader in global content connectivity solutions. The all-digital satellites are being prepared in Florida for launch to Medium Earth Orbit (MEO), 8,000 km from Earth, where they will provide low-latency, high-throughput connectivity to users around the world.

The satellites combine Boeing’s flight-proven 702 platform, Boeing subsidiary Spectrolab’s custom-designed solar arrays built to withstand harsh MEO radiation, and, most critically, the 702X software-defined payload providing more than 5,000 steerable beams per satellite.

“SES's O3b mPOWER system is a true gamechanger and will transform the way people think about connectivity,” said Ruy Pinto, Chief Technology Officer at SES. “Delivering performance above all, O3b mPOWER will offer connectivity services to government organizations and enterprises based in the most remote regions. In times of natural disasters, when networks are disrupted, O3b mPOWER’s low-latency services can quickly restore critical communications networks.”

Instead of relying on fewer, larger, fixed beams or a proliferated Low Earth Orbit (LEO) constellation covering vast regions – systems that struggle to fulfill high-density demand – the software-driven O3b mPOWER system is equipped with shapeable beams that can be repositioned based on real-time data from SES customers’ terminals, delivering a superior end-user experience.

With Boeing contracted to deliver 11 O3b mPOWER satellites to SES, Boeing continues production, integration and testing of the remaining nine spacecraft.

“SES approached us with a vision to create global equity, by providing people with high-speed connectivity where it wasn’t economically or physically feasible to build fiber infrastructure,” said Jim Chilton, senior vice president of Space and Launch at Boeing Defense, Space & Security. “We partnered to create a super computer constellation in space to meet that goal, and we can’t wait to see what SES does as the 702X platform’s first user.”

The O3b mPOWER satellites are also flexible in their launch configuration, with the ability to launch two or three satellites at a time. To learn more about O3b mPOWER, visit ses.com/O3b-mPOWER.

As a leading global aerospace company, Boeing develops, manufactures and services commercial airplanes, defense products and space systems for customers in more than 150 countries. As a top U.S. exporter, the company leverages the talents of a global supplier base to advance economic opportunity, sustainability and community impact. Boeing's diverse team is committed to innovating for the future, leading with sustainability, and cultivating a culture based on the company's core values of safety, quality and integrity. HAKUTO-R is now planned for Dec 11.

So unless the O3b launch has been moved to LC-39A, it will need to be delayed by several days.

I don't think so, but you're aware of how much guesswork goes into trying to interpret these.

The timing on this one aligns with O3b mPOWER 1/2.  The day-to-day time change on the other one aligns with a mid-latitude Starlink launch.

SpaceX is targeting Friday, December 16 for a Falcon 9 launch of the SES O3b mPOWER mission to medium-Earth orbit from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. The 87-minute launch window opens at 4:21 p.m. ET (21:21 UTC), and a backup opportunity is available on Saturday, December 17 with the same window.

The first stage booster supporting this mission previously launched CRS-22, Crew-3, Turksat 5B, Crew-4, CRS-25, Eutelsat HOTBIRD 13G and one Starlink mission. Following stage separation, the first stage will land on the A Shortfall of Gravitas droneship, which will be stationed in the Atlantic Ocean.

A live webcast of this mission will begin about 15 minutes prior to liftoff.

I know the mission is ongoing but I feel Siva is owed a shout-out.  I have a lot of noise in my house right now, yet even at low volume his commentary was easy to understand, including when he was talking very fast.

Oh, and Sage 1 did land!

Is there information as to the delay to the end of the launch window? SpaceX didn’t say why.

Looking to the drone ship footage my guess would be Booster Recovery Weather.

Next burn in about an hour & 20 mins - no update yet on success of 2nd burn

Edit to add: worth noting there were some telemetry issues during coast phase (I think due to lack of ground coverage)

Timing of the following mPower launches:
NSF SpaceX launches second mission from Florida within two days, December 17:
Quote
SES says the plan is to launch four more satellites on two different launches during the first quarter of 2023. That is expected to be followed by two more satellites launched later in 2023. A final three satellites are expected to launch in 2024, completing the network.

Why the satellites' processing was quicker than usual:
SFN First O3b mPOWER broadband satellites set for liftoff after quick launch campaign, December 15:
Quote
The two O3b mPOWER spacecraft arrived at Cape Canaveral on Dec. 3 after a cross-country flight from Boeing’s commercial satellite manufacturing plant in El Segundo, California. Boeing engineers in California connected the two satellites together into their launch configuration at the factory, accomplishing a task more typically done at the launch site in the final weeks before liftoff.

The satellites rode a Ukrainian Antonov An-124 cargo plane from California to the Florida spaceport. Boeing also loaded xenon gas into the satellites’ propulsion systems before the departed the factory near Los Angeles International Airport, a company official told Spaceflight Now. <snip>

The design of the satellites allowed Boeing to slash the time required to ready the O3b mPOWER spacecraft for launch. Instead of mating the satellites and fueling them at Cape Canaveral, Boeing only needed to complete final functional testing on the satellites before encapsulating them inside the Falcon 9 rocket’s nose cone.

And, when these two satellites should enter service, same source:
Quote
The O3b mPOWER satellites should reach their circular 5,000-mile-high perch around April, according to SES.

Does anyone have updated information on the satellites?
At Celestrak (or similar websites) there are 3 objects, for 2022-174A (O3B MPOWER-A F1) there are 17 day old TLEs.
For 2022-174B (O3B MPOWER-A F2) and 2022-174C (FALCON 9 R/B) there are current TLEs, the orbits are almost identical and still have the same altitude as after the launch.
Due to natural drift, objects B and C now have a argument of perigee ~243 deg.. If one of them is a satellite, the energy requirements to reach a ~8000 km orbit with 0° incl. would be significantly increased.
Something is wrong.   ???

Object 174A now has current data and seems to be on the move. No apparent change for 174B and 174C

If something was wrong I would expect to see more about this in other sources (Jonathan McDowell)? The silence is deafening.

Perhaps this is normal for electric propulsion orbit raising?

FWIW Jonathan (and perhaps other such figures with him) is in a conference and has advised he won't be following events as closely around these dates.

Probably  the rules, which for satellites with chemical propulsion apply, do not apply to electric ones.
But why is the second satellite not rising?
The TLE assignment for object A was lost when the satellite began maneuvering.
The orbit data of objects B and C went up and down violently in late December. ( screenshots source Celestrak )

Object B and C at N2YO.com, still close together: https://www.n2yo.com/?s=54756|54757
That doesn't seem logical to me, even if the satellite hadn't maneuvered yet.

The sat that started orbit raising is at 4000km perigee and 7 degree inclination.  The other still isn't moving.

Objects B and C practically stick together and don't move any further apart.
The orbit data differ minimally, otherwise I would say that's just one object.
Something is strange.

The data in these charts is a little different for the two objects:
https://celestrak.org/NORAD/elements/graph-orbit-data.php?CATNR=54756
https://celestrak.org/NORAD/elements/graph-orbit-data.php?CATNR=54757

But I have no idea how to interpret that data so I can't judge if that is a real difference or just noise.

Both charts have an area of large fluctuations that stand out significantly from the rest of the chart, any idea why?

If the 3rd object 174C is the F9 2nd stage, was it expected to remain in this orbit? Or was it expected to deorbit (or move to some out of the way orbit)?

Yes, the 2nd stage was expected to remain in orbit. The satellites got deployed into a 2800km x 7000km, which basically used up all the fuel. So just like with Geostationary Transfer Orbit or Direct-To-Geostationary-Orbit launches there wasn't enough fuel left to perform the de-orbit burn.

More than 7 weeks after the launch, the objects 2022-174B and -174C still in paired flight around the earth.
The orbits currently differ only minimally in terms of inclination.
You have to zoom the N2YO.com live projection map far to separate the objects.
I don't understand that.  ???

So finally there are meaningful TLE from the 2nd satellite. Everything fine, rises.
I don't know how and why the Falcon 9 second stage was recorded twice. That couldn't be right.
