Since a PSLV was recently launched from FLP, assuming a minimum preparation/LV assembly time of 3 months..and factoring in one or maybe 2 months overhead...the earliest the launch could be end of October.

1C would be followed by 1D. Going by the recent/upcoming mission timelines and Oct/Nov cyclone period, this might get delayed to early Jan next year.

What is the typical turn-around time required for the First Launch Pad, involving all the cleaning, maintenance works and assembling of a new rocket? 2-3 months?

We don't know for sure, because this is the first time ISRO has taken up such a tight schedule of launches and missions.

Before 1D, the GSLV-MKIII test launch is likely. ISRO chief said in 45 days which will be early December ..., unless postponed. I think it will use the second launch pad. So first will be available for launch by end of December or early Jan '15

ISRO chairman said that the PSLV-C26 was assembled in 60 days at SDSC SHAR (around  01:14:05 mark ). Since PSLV-C26 used FLP, I guess it occupied launch pad for 60 days. And, from a news article, we have:
Quote
Before every satellite is sent up, the launch pad needs a 45-day pre-launch ‘campaign' and a 15-day post-launch refurbishing of burnt-out systems.

Hmm....zero updates from ISRO at T-5 days? This is a first for them since a few years ago....  ::)

As soon as I posted ISRO posted an update....that the launch has been postponed due to a transmitter problem on IRNSS-1D.  :P

---------------------------------

Launch of PSLV-C27 with IRNSS-1D postponed
The launch of India’s fourth Navigation Satellite IRNSS-1D onboard PSLV-C27 was originally scheduled for March 09, 2015 from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota. During the integrated electrical checks of Launch Vehicle along with Satellite after the closure of heat shield on March 03, 2015, an anomaly was observed in one of the telemetry transmitters of the Satellite. In order to resolve the technical anomaly through further test, simulation and analysis, the launch of PSLV-C27 with IRNSS-1D has been postponed.

The Indian space agency is hoping to mate the country's fourth regional navigation satellite around March 19, after replacing a faulty transmitter on Monday, said a senior official.
"The new transmitter is expected to be fixed in the satellite and tested. Then the fully assembled satellite will be mated with the rocket," M.Y.S. Prasad, director of Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) told IANS over phone.

The transmitter from Isro Satellite Centre, located in Bangalore and that is part of Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro), reached SDSC on Sunday.

After mating the satellite with the rocket, a full system check would be carried out and then the rocket launch date would be fixed.

Please tell them to refrain from scheduling the launch between March 25-27 - I don't think Chris and me and others can withstand at least 6 launches in 3 days.  :P

Is this the first time we've been able to see strap-on jettison? :D :D  I was rooting for the EDIT: Korolev Tsiolkovsky cross (but that didn't seem to materialise - it probably doesn't happen on the PSLV because of the number and the geometry of the strap-ons). Commentator said visibility was so good that we might've been able to see S1 sep, but the cameraman slewed to a shot of smoke plume. :-/

ISRO Chairman addressing the gathering.

Let me congratulate the entire ISRO team for the 28th consecutive successful mission of the PSLV

PSLV launch system shows that it has come of age, despite the small hiccup with the satellite, in one of its subsystems.

Would like to congratulate the ISRO team for getting the Gandhi Peace Prize, announced yesterday.

Recognition of the work ISRO has been doing since decades to apply space technology to solving the problems of the country.

At the same time, the country has placed a great responsibility on ISRO.

---

Project Director

Completed the minimum essential requirement of four satellites to enable IRNSS operation.

Orbital injection details: 282.5 km (284 km) x 20,644 km (20,650 km).
Inclination, and AOP are within specified. One order better than the expected dispersion.

With this mission 4 successful missions in one financial year.

Mission after mission, we've been improving through rigorous reviews.
(Bravo. Reviews, and analysis, not only after anomalous events)

The next PSLV in June (UK satellites on board)
The next one after that is the 5th IRNSS one.

---

Director of ISAC (?)

Transmitter on IRNSS turned on.
S/C is power positive. All arrays deployed.
Pyro also fired, Thrust control enabled, in 3 axis control.

Refers to this week being a navigation week. :D For the GNSS, GPS and IRNSS launches this week.

Thanks everyone - from the technician who welds plumb lines, to someone who solders a circuit, to everyone involved.

---

Director VSSC (M. Chandradathan)

"Every successful mission is an occasion to rejoice, and to accumulate more energy to come out with more power, to pursue further goals."

2015 is a very critical year, to have a minimum of 5 more missions this year.
3 more PSLVs, the GLSV-D6 with the indigenous cryo engine (CUS-25?), and... <drum roll> RLV-TD!

Confident on ability to deliver. Says that 1/3rd of all staff at all ISRO centres comprise the youth, and comments on the energy they bring.

Thanks the govt. for support, and exhorts people to continue to keep ISRO at the top of the rankings of government agencies.

---

Shivakumar

IRNSS should be activated by April.

---

Director LPSC (K Sivan)

It's not only a result of the PSLV maturity, but also a result of the tireless efforts and many sleepless nights. (Wait. what? If it's mature, then why sleepless nights)

Another important thing that he wants to declare, with the permission of the Chairman... The first integrated test of the CUS-25 was conducted last week, and the engine has been tested to the rated level. Now working toward extending the duration to 200s and then to flight duration. The C-25 is on fast-track mode.

To realise the flight of the GSLV Mk-III within the next two years.

In addition to the ongoing pursuit of engines that power higher payloads to orbit.

---

(I skipped the address of a few others, with mundanity :P)

Now current Chairman calling on his predecessor to convey a few words... Ahh. Indian work culture and seniority reverence. When will you de-orbit? :P

2 objects have been catalogued by USSTRATCOM
2015-018A/40547 in 278 x 20567 km x 19.22° (presumably the S/C)
2015-018B/40548 in 278 x 20898 x 19.08° (presumably PSLV 4th stage)

I could not travel to Sriharikota this time and had to witness the launch of PSLV C27 from Chennai. Chennai is about 80 kms from the launch pad at Sriharikota. All the pics were taken through my ED80 telescope and Canon 500D. But the good thing was that for the first time I was able to catch the 2nd stage ignition. Normally this gets hidden when viewing from SHAR since we are viewing the launch from behind the rocket path. Chennai gets an almost broadside view.

With 4 IRNSS satellites, achieved minimum required configuration for IRNSS navigation service.

The prime reason for the cadence and payloads of recent PSLV launches is to initiate navigation service?

Satellite          Launch
IRNSS 1A        July 1, 2013
MOM               November 5, 2013
IRNSS 1B        April 4, 2014
SPOT 7, et al   June 30, 2014
IRNSS 1C        October 15, 2014
IRNSS 1D        March 28, 2015

(The exceptions are MOM and SPOT--but MOM had a brief launch window to reach Mars, and SPOT was a launch revenue source.)

If the navigation service is a priority, why not launch 1E, 1F, and 1G as the next three PSLV payloads this year?

Are there other considerations?

Curious,

They could have a single team that works sequentially on testing, preparation and integration. Then you have the LEOP and commissioning that's also better done sequentially. Why double the teams for just 7 birds?

From the "Indian Launch Schedule" thread , the remaining PSLV launches this year are:
Quote
June -  PSLV C28 - 3 DMC3(UK)

            - PSLV(XL) C29 - IRNSS-1E

Q4    - PSLV (XL) C34 SLP- AstroSat-1 + LAPAN-A2 (Indon.) + TeLEOS-1(Sing.) + SkySat#

of these the DMC3(UK) and the LAPAN-A2 etc launches earn revenue.

Reasons cud be:
1. As pointed out by Baldusi ..  There IS one team  ( we can see same faces in every PSLV launch video  manning same consoles .. except payload specialists )
2. Only 2 Launch assembly facilities hinder back to back launches in a very short period
3. Surely third party launches can't be sidelined for own 'secondary'  missions ..  Sky will not fall if IRNSS system is not up in immediate future.
4. IRNSS has a totally different orbit so they can neither be clubbed with Polar nor with  'PSLV launched GSO' payloads. They call for dedicated launch.

Just to add in my guess, maybe there was a bit of pressure from the military/security establishment to have a minimum working independent navigation system ASAP for their needs. Perhaps that has been achieved with this launch..

And at some point they will expire and need to be replaced. Read somewhere that the original plan was to spread the launches once every six months, and to retain two ground spares. Should be easier to maintain the constellation?

Current GSO comm birds have what, 10 year of expected life? That would require the replacement of IRNSS-1A by 2023, probably ready by 2020. If the last bird is IRNSS-1G and goes up by 2017, they will probably be working on the second version for straight replacement.

My, it's been a very busy 5 days in spaceflight.

Congrats to the Indian government for a successful launch!
