honour for a rocket-pioneer with your help
« on: 04/27/2008 01:03 pm »
Hi,
many of you may know the name of Konrad Dannenberg, who was one of the german engineers that constructed the saturn V.

Konrad Dannenberg was born in the small city of Weißenfels in Saxony-Anhalt.
In this city there is a local bases of the german federal Agency for Technical Relief THW
(a disaster relief organisation controlled by the German federal government) which is looking for a name for its new mission boat and some spaceflight-fans suggested Konrad Dannenberg.

Now there is a online-voting for the name of this boat on

http://www.thw-weissenfels.de/031ee999cd0d76c4e.php4

and the spaceflight-fans of the THW in Weißenfels hope for your support to honour Konrad Dannenberg in his birth city.

thanks a lot for your support

Lara

PS: Because its a german site, I will translate the first passage:

We need your help

The preliminary decision is made - "140 hp are looking for a name" now its the decision!

The last word
... is for the chief of the base

Dear visitors, companions and friends of the THW,

the federal Agency for Technical Relief needs YOUR help. These are OLAF and MANFRED:
- the 70-hp engines of our new MZAB (multible use mission boat). Many suggestions reached us in the last weeks. So now ist our question, which name should it get:

Here is a KSC press release about Mr. Dannenberg.

Here is a Space Show interview that included Konrad.  About 3/4ths of the way into the interview, he provides an interesting insight into what it was like to work for von Braun.

Here are links to Astronautix and Wikipedia articles about him.

What is his connection to disaster relief?

The connection is technology. THW really means " Agency for Technical Relief ". It is a disaster relief organisation which main work is based on modern technical equipment on functional vehicles. (For more information you may also look at http://www.thw.bund.de/cln_036/nn_931624/EN/content/about__us/general__information/tasks/tasks__node.html__nnn=true and the links at this site)
This type of a mission boat is setting a benchmark in the possibilities the specialized squad "water-hazard" has in the case of a disaster with or on water. So we like the idea to honour the technology-pioneer Konrad Dannenberg (who is also born in our city) because the work of THW is always closely linked with technology.

That seems pretty thin.  Shouldn't a boat for disaster relief be named either for somebody who has worked on disaster relief, or given a name that is appropriate, like "Hope" or "Comfort"?

In the United States we have gotten into an unfortunate situation where Congress now names naval vessels for members of Congress.  The tradition was that they were named for naval heroes, great battles, cities or states.  That is still largely the rule, but it seems like a perversion of the system when politics takes over and the people in power name things to honor themselves.

That is unfortunate.

The Royal Navy names their ships after UK cities. Like HMS Bristol. Or famous ships from the past, like the aircraft carrier HMS Royal Ark.

I can't for the life of me imagine a HMS Frank Fields

The THW is not like the army or the National Guard, it´s an organization of volunteers who to this job mostly in their free time, so there are 668 local bases managed and working by normal people who have fun to do this job apart from their normal work.
Of course all of these bases are equal structured und identically trained and there is a coordination by higher officials but the bases do their usual every-day-work (i.e. cooperations with fire departments, training, technical assistance) local for themselves and independent from other bases. So a base of the THW is more orientated to its city as to another base or the whole organization. That`s the reason why it is usual in the THW to name boats for more or less famous or important people, who lived or worked in the city of the base. You are right, it is also usual to name those boats for somebody who was member of the base who´s merits for the base are important. The problem of the THW in Weissenfels is that it is a quite young base, founded in 1992 (Weissenfels was part of the GDR in which there was no THW) so there is just no meritorious veteran jet to be a possibility.
All in all the whole naming-process of a boat in the THW is in the hands of the bases itself; there is no politician or higher official of the THW involved in this case. If the name is given only by the officials of a base, by the specialized squad water-hazard, by the whole base at all or whoever, this is only the affair of the base.
The base in Weissenfels decided to collect suggestions for names from the members of the base, the inhabitants of the city or other interested people. The officials of the base did a preselection (which of this suggestions are principally appropriate) and now there is the election on the run about these suggestions and everybody may vote (on vote per ip and day). This is the way it went in Weissenfels and I have no influence to change the suggestions which have gone in the election (as you would like to see "Hope" or "Comfort" on the list). I only fulfill the wish of some members of the base (me included) who like the boat to be named for Konrad Dannenberg by doing “lobby-work” in the way that I ask for support on this board.
You may vote for the name if you like the idea, you don´t have to vote if you don´t like the idea. I just hope to find some people who like the idea among the spaceflight-fans here on this board.

Greetings Lara

Voted, and he's winning!

Konrad Dannenberg          139    (46.8%)
Schusterjunge          87   (29.3%)
Blue Angel          25   (8.4%)

Even if this appears to be just a powerboat?  :o

By the way, Schusterjunge means shoemaker-boy. This is a sculpture in the park of Weissenfels which remembers the past of the city as a center of the shoemaking-industry.
And this name I really don´t like for a high-tec-boat... ;)

About a year ago Konrad was out here at KSC.  He gave a talk to a group of about 100 of us.  I got to personally meet him after the talk.  A very interesting peron and career.  Good luck with the board naming.
