SpaceX Crew Dragon DM2 - Capsule naming contest
« on: 05/01/2020 10:40 pm »
In less than one month (NET) NASA+SpaceX is scheduled to launch Astronauts from American Soil on SpaceX built capsule.

NASA has this tradition of letting Astronauts name their capsules.

We don't know if this tradition will be upheld for this particular launch.
We don't know if the name has already been long chosen or is still undetermined.
We also don't know if whoever decides upon this name even reads NSF.

But such things have never stopped us, so let's have a DM2 Capsule naming contest for the LOLz.

How this works:

Suggest names in this thread in your post. You can also comment on other suggestions, and why they are awesome or not so much, and derail the thread in of topic discussion to the degree the mods will tolerate.

I will read through the thread at regular intervals (Once a day) and collect any suggestions that have 3 or more likes on them and put them in the poll.

The poll will be made in such a way exactly one name can be selected but users can change their selection (in case an awesome new name gets selected) as well as see the current scores. (I just tested - looks like it IS possible to edit the poll in such a way :) )

Whoever suggested the winning name gets bragging rights.
If that name then actually gets chosen for the capsule for real, I will personally sponsor a year of L2 membership for the winner (or any other person chosen by the winner if the winner already has L2 membership) Caveat: This does not apply if the person in question had inside knowledge from NASA/SpaceX and knew the chosen name beforehand ;P ( Edit: At the time of posting. Putting the name here first, and then pitching the suggestion to the astronauts for consideration would be an OK strategy I think ;)  EditEdit: Only the first suggestion of each name counts )

Attention:
People keep suggesting more than one name in the same post. Only names with 3 "likes" will make it to the poll. Likes on posts with more than 1 name will be ignored. Posts with multiple names are also not eligible for "winning".
If you want to suggest more than 1 name, then make multiple posts, so they can be "liked" individually.
As soon as a name has 3 likes or more, it will be included in the poll (so far the poll is a placeholder)

You can suggest as many names as you like (in as many posts). You can "like" as many names as you wish. You cannot "like" your own suggestions (because you cannot "like" your own posts)

Edit 2020-05-02:
List of eligible suggestions for poll (3 likes) so far:
I think I'll also start with a suggestion.

She might should be named "Trampoline" :-)
I’m a traditionalist.....Enterprise....
As per Corvus corax suggestion

Wyvern
"Puff" the Magic Dragon
Adding to poll...   -- and the votes made prior to listing of any options were zeroed ;)

Edit Still on 2020-05-02:
Ok, so you have a Dragon, riding on a Falcon, powered by Merlins...... Anyone else here getting a King Arthur / Camelot / Sword in the Stone feel here?

The answer is obvious......

Excalibur!  ;)
From my take on naming DM-2 on the party thread. ANd since the likely final arbiter of the naming is the SX CTO. My suggestion should have a bettter shot happening.

Hijack from the SpX-DM2 dicussion thread
Like VP above, I would also like to know if DM-2 has been named by her crew ??

If not, might I suggest, "Pathfinder?"

Nah. It is a puny White Dragon. So appropriate naming is "Ruth".

The White Dragon by Anne McCaffrey

Edit 2020-05-26 - one day before launch - some new posts got 3 likes, adding to poll

"Phoenix"... We know the myth...
https://www.sunsigns.org/phoenix-animal-totem-symbolic-meanings/
The Hoser, because well, Bob and Doug.
Columbia

Edit: It's launch day. And - by 3 likes - we have one final late entry to the poll: Shadowfax
Given "Merlin", "Dragon", and the whole fantasy riff thing, the obvious name is Gandalf's horse, "Shadowfax"!

I think Dragonfly was already taken for a different purpose, so doesn't seem fair... I submit "Meganeura"  8)

I like those, buuut  - one suggestion per post please. I'm adding a name to the poll iff it gets 3 likes. Assuming this gets 3 likes, which should I add? The first for 3 likes, the first 2 for 6?

Edit: Of course multiple suggestions are a good thing, just make multiple posts for them. In this case I'd suggest you edit your post, "bold" Wyvern and add 2 new extra posts for Firebolt and Drake,

I think "Pathfinder" fits the ticket.
She is afterall, the very first of a new way to lift humans off the Earth to space. That is, commercially.

I like the idea of using navy ship names so here's my list of current names that might fit:
Freedom
Independence
Patriot
Pioneer
Scout
and of course Enterprise

Similar idea: "Auspicious". If not for this, then for the first uncrewed Mars Starship.

So far, no Dragon 2 or Starliner capsules for crewed have yet been given names, so we'll see if Boeing and SpaceX could name crewed missions for deceased US astronauts. The first Dragon 2 manned spaceflight should be christened the John Glenn, while the first crewed Starliner mission should be named Wally Schirra.

I’m a traditionalist.....Enterprise....

It's the first commercial launch. It's gotta be Enterprise, surely?

But I also like naming Dragon capsules after actual dragons, so put me down for Ruth too.
