Report #JA12-018

NASA HOSTS SPECIAL EVENT WITH EXPEDITION 30 COMMANDER DAN BURBANK

HOUSTON – NASA astronaut Dan Burbank, who recently returned from a five-month mission to the International Space Station, will share his spaceflight experiences with the public, friends and co-workers at 7:30 p.m. CDT on June. 14 at Space Center Houston.

Burbank will host a multimedia presentation about his recent stay on the orbiting laboratory in the Northrop Grumman Theater. His presentation will include an awards ceremony, video, photos and a question-and-answer session, followed by a brief autograph opportunity.

During the mission, Burbank completed 165 days in space as a member of the Expedition 29 and 30 crews. He and his crewmates, Expedition 30 Flight Engineers Anton Shkaplerov and Anatoly Ivanishin of the Russian Federal Space Agency, returned to Earth in their Soyuz spacecraft at 6:45 a.m. on April 27.

As part of a comprehensive research program, Burbank worked with experiments related to how the space environment affects the human body, plants, microbes, fluids, materials and combustion. Burbank also worked with technology development experiments, notably supporting the initial checkout and tests of Robonaut 2, eventually sharing a handshake with the first humanoid robot in space. He and his colleagues in orbit also spent time performing routine maintenance and upgrades to station systems.

Burbank is a native of Yarmouthport, Mass., and a 1985 graduate of the United States Coast Guard Academy. After earning his commission, he served in various roles as a Coast Guard officer. He received a Master of Science degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in 1990.

NASA selected Burbank as an astronaut in 1996. A veteran of three spaceflights, he has logged 189 days in space.

To arrange an interview with Burbank, please contact Brenda Cabaniss, publicist, Astronaut Appearances Office, at 281-244-8860.
