4:36 PM · Mar 9, 2022
Tweet Contents: Anyone out there have a trade off chart between tank pressure and tank weight for COPVs? Maybe someone at @CopSub has dealt with this? I was making an estimate but I fear I can't just totally wing it like I had planned
In our experience, COPV gain/pain flattens out above 6000 psi and is <1 above 10,000 psi, unless volume constrained like Dragon. Heating from pressurization & cooling from depressurization also become major problems at very high pressure.

Tweet Contents: The capability of Starship is mind blowing [STS, FH, SLS B1, SV, SS comp chart]
Optimized, fully-reusable Starship is ~150t to same reference orbit as Saturn V. In expendable mode, Starship payload would be 250t to 300t.

Tweet contents:  First Starship orbital flight will be with Raptor 2 engines, as they are much more capable & reliable. 230 ton or ~500k lb thrust at sea level.  We’ll have 39 flightworthy engines built by next month, then another month to integrate, so hopefully May for orbital flight test.

June 1st Updates:

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1531880109225005056
2:07 AM · Jun 1, 2022
Tweet Contents: An idea of the scale of the Starship Super Heavy. The booster stage needed to escape Earth's deep gravity well is expected to be 72 m (236 ft) long and 9 m (30 ft) in diameter with a gross liftoff mass of 3,680,000 kg (8,110,000 lb) [source, read more: https://buff.ly/39VEYy5] [Comp Chart: Energia -> SS/SH]
The specs on Wikipedia aren’t quite right, but close enough.  Thrust, liftoff mass, length & payload will grow over time.

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1531884243097378816
2:23 AM · Jun 1, 2022
Tweet Contents: Starship if launched fully reusable will get ~150 tons of payload to orbit. Starship if launched expendable can get ~250 tons of payload to orbit. Why does the expendability increase the payload to orbit by this much?
The amazing part will be having an orbital rocket that is fully & rapidly reusable with any payload at all!  Everyone else gave up when they realized that their fully reusable payload<0.  We still have a long way to go.

June 18th Updates:  Raptor 2 vs Raptor 1

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1538195371943403521
Tweet Contents:  Raptor 1 vs Raptor 2! We’re working on a video to accompany the last part of the Elon convo on Raptor! We’re not sure on their mass but we approximate ~2,000 kg for Raptor 1 & ~1,600 kg for Raptor 2. Is this close @elonmusk? Incredible renders by @IzanRamos2002 & @Caspar_Stanley!
Yes, about 20% more thrust & 20% less mass, but focus has been heavily on production rate & reliability.

Mass, thrust & Isp will all improve, as will production rate, reliability & cost.

This is the only way to make life multi-planetary and extend consciousness into the void.

July 11th Updates:  Booster 7 spin start test issue

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1546639772621365248
Tweet Contents:  Holy moly. Well, that was unexpected!
Yeah, actually not good. Team is assessing damage.

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1546641991597006851
Tweet Contents:  In the big picture still early days with Raptor 2. Still learning I guess. Good luck with the analysis.
Cryogenic fuel is an added challenge, as it evaporates to create fuel-air explosion risk in a partially oxygen atmosphere like Earth.

That said, we have a lot of sensors to detect this. More later.

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1546713443943825408
Tweet Contents:  Elon, would it be possible to maybe burn/evaporate the leaks caused before ignition? I guess space shuttle used to do this, they used to setup small sparks under the shuttle's engine section & burn off all the Hydrogen leaks that may have happened before ignition ...
That is one of the things we will be doing going forward.

This particular issue, however, was specific to the engine spin start test (Raptor has a complex start sequence).

Going forward, we won’t do a spin start test with all 33 engines at once.

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1546727913944502274
Tweet Contents:  Very curious how this plays out for B7. The biggest question is how’re the engines. What kind of damage was done to them. I’m teetering between it being catastrophic to the engines & “tis but a scratch”… can’t wait to hear what the teams determine & what the next steps are!
Base of the vehicle seems ok by flashlight. I was just out there about an hour ago. We shut down the pad for the night for safety. Will know more in the morning.

July 14th Updates:  Raptor mass and electric TVC

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1547478741655228416
Tweet Contents:  Tomorrow [July 14th], I'm posting a deep rundown on Raptor 1 VS Raptor 2. It's an overview of the changes @SpaceX has made to the engine, their stats, & what things SpaceX is continuing to work on! Featuring incredible renders from @Caspar_Stanley and @IzanRamos2002!
Most importantly, we need to delete or thermally protect remaining secondary structure, so we can remove shrouds

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1547759390513512455
Tweet Contents:  Well I’m sure glad we mentioned the shrouds in the video! 😂 that would’ve been embarrassing if I left out “the most important thing” 😅 -
All mass necessitated by an engine design should count as engine mass, eg shrouds, TVC hydraulic power or excess purge gas.
Raptors in production now have electric TVC, saving over a ton of hydraulics mass on booster.

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1547763701121294336
Tweet Contents:   So is the electrical power for that coming from batteries? Have you done the trades on a generator on the turbo pump shaft vs battery?
Electric power for booster & ship is needed even when engines aren’t running & incremental power draw of TVC isn’t too bad. We have local supercaps on each engine to deal with power spikes.

August 28th 2022 Updates:  Engine containment upgrades

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1564073147636252674
Tweet Contents: Hey @elonmusk why can't the Booster QD on the OLM be used to start the center 13 engines?
In other words, the launch mount would be responsible for starting all 33 engines instead of just the outer 20🤷🏾‍♂️. COPV's would only used for boost back and landing burns.
Agreed, we recently made this change & many others.
An intense effort is underway to achieve robust engine containment in case of RUD to protect booster, other engines & launch ring.
