Post numbers in a thread
« on: 07/02/2025 09:21 am »
Hi,
I often see members saying "see post number xx" while reading a thread.
I searched but couldn't find any such number.
Where do you find it ? Has it to be activated somewhere to be displayed (not "by default" ?).
Thanks a lot.

And of course, linking to the post (which will have a specific URL) is always best. Rather than looking for a number.

OK, since this thread is apparently aimed at how to reference texts, it triggers a question that has been in my mind for years but has just lingered there. If someone deletes a message (originator, moderator, whoever), does the message number of all succeeding messages become renumbered such that there is no gap in messages numbers or is a gap list. Same question when someone (moderator or otherwise) moves a number of posts to a different thread. For what it is worth, my experience is each time the reader moves to the next page, the first message number is a multiple of twenty (20). Alternative: is it just better to quote the item of interest? (Not necessarily important, but I know I have messed up on posts by tryng to quote and getting strange results. For now, lets just write that off to inexperience -- should I instead post more often -- that is a rhethorical question.) Once upon a time, on a different website, I remember being discouraged to reference reply numbers when responding/participating in a discussion. BTW, I am skipping the "preview" step because, perhaps due to my own incompetence, I have not obtained favorable results. Be that as it may. Could just be me

A posts' permalink does not change but reply numbering does when a post is deleted or moved by anyone and if a thread is merged with another thread the posts of both threads are automatically sorted and ordered in chronological order by the timestamp when the reply was originally posted regardless of thread title change.

Try answering your own question by deleting your post, refreshing the page, and seeing if the post numbers get reorganized or leave a gap.  This post's original number is #6.
