I use notifications for keeping current with threads I have a specific interest in, but I have yet to figure out the best way to manage the "Unread Topics" list.

I looked in the profile section for a way to keep threads/sections out of the "Unread Topics" list, but couldn't find anything obvious.

That got me wondering how other people sift "Unread Topics". Is there a better way to skip over threads/sections that I want to ignore?

I look through the list and read the ones I want.  When I have read everything that I want, I hit "MARK AS MESSAGES AS READ"

I do the same thing Jim does, but wou'd rejoice at a way to mark a topic or section as "of no interest" (and help reduce the site's bandwidth by sending me fewer pages to browse through ;-)

Online mtakala24

I think that would increase the load on the server, though.

From the Unread Topics list I control-click on every "new" button. This opens a new tab for each. When I have about 12 new tabs open I go through each of them and read as much or as little as interests me, closing each as I go. Once all the tabs are read, I go back to the Unread Topics list.

Me too, but a three-button mouse with center button set to "open link in new tab" works even easier!
