Author Topic: Master Thread for NASASpaceflight.com and NSF Forum Outages, Upgrades and Error Message Reporting  (Read 247937 times)

Ok, a joyous day for NSF as we implement the upgrades and improvements.

NEWS SITE:

First, the news site has its new header and logo (depending on your DNS, otherwise you'll not see it yet. Trick is to close your browsers and open again).

The logo is some amazing work by our partners and friends, the MaxQ guys (http://www.maxqent.com/) in tandem with Mark and some of his design friends. Nate and Brian at MaxQ with the lightbulb moment on the design.

The news site had already been upgraded and reprogrammed by the excellent Aaron with http://dr-nox.com/ - so you're used to the layout already.

Latest Forum Posts and L2 Headlines will return once the new forum - from where they get their data - is live.

FORUM:

This has been an ongoing task for some time. We're going to be using the latest version of the forum format you're used to, with a huge amount of work by Jester, who a lot of you know already as a big part of NSF.

It'll have commonality with the news site, via the new header that matches on both the news site and the forum.

It's security is right up to date. As is it's functionality. We have items such as "twitter on profile" and "tapatalk" installed.

L2 sections are now a slightly different appearance to those on the open forum, visually showing its ring-fenced nature for content.

While the News Site upgrade resulted in zero downtime (just a case of waiting for each and everyone's DNS to catch up), we will need to lock this current forum, update the new forum that's running on another server, then hit the migrate.

Downtime for the forum during this period is expected to be for 90/120 minutes Start time is ETA 21:30 GMT. 17:30 Eastern.

Follow @nasaspaceflight for notification of how the transition is going and when we'll be back.

A huge congratulations to all those involved with the forum upgrade!

When I first looked into what was required after I completed the Wordpress frontpage styling it was incredibly daunting to do the same with the ancient forum install - so daunting I just couldn't offer the quick turnaround time required with my full time job so I am VERY impressed Jester, Mark and Chris (And anyone else involved of course!) have been able to get this out asap.

The news site looks good.  It's nice and clean.

I notice the headings "Unmanned" and "Other" are on a second row below the rest of the headings.  Is that intentional?  It doesn't change if I widen my browser window.  I'm using Safari on a Mac, if that matters.
The Space Age is just starting to get interesting.

Windows 7 with Firefox, all is well, so it may be the browser.

I noticed something similar, sometimes 'Other', sometimes 'Unmanned' and 'Other' can move to a second row, depending on the zoom level. (Firefox 23 on Windows 7)

If I make my browser window narrower, the headings don't reflow.  It just cuts off the right edge.  But those two headings still stay on the second row even if I make the window full screen.

Edit:  Apart from that minor cosmetic flaw, everything seems to work.

A small suggestion:  How about putting the dates of the articles on the front page?  It's not a big deal, though, if it has already been considered and rejected.  Keeping the page clean and uncluttered is important, too.

There's dates on the articles, not the headers. I much prefer it that way.

I like the new news logo.

Will the forum get the new logo too?

Offline Chris Bergin

Yep. The forum will now match the news site header for the first time in our history.

Sneaky peek with 90 minutes to the downtime for the handover.

Mark & friends did a super job.  I think the new logo is cool!

Offline Chris Bergin

Ok folks, any moment - when Mark comes back online - and we'll be down for the migration!

Chris.

Looks good!

The headings are all in one row on the forum pages, but still not on the front page.  The forum pages are wider.

page isn't sizing properly in my browser (firefox). It's too wide, with a horizontal scroll bar at the bottom. (unless it's supposed to be that way, with the "Site Booster Frame" falling off the right side of the screen)

The "Unread Topics" header option is gone for me.
Human spaceflight is basically just LARPing now.

Fine on Chrome and Firefox here.

Tried Shift and Minus, once, on your keyboard?
