2) How much annual tonnage to justify mass transportation to orbit?

3) There has been much talk of methods of attaining orbit other than rockets and spaceplanes, such as space elevators, maglevs in vacuum, skyhooks, etc. to put payloads into orbit at a lower cost than rockets. Those other methods will require a certain amount of traffic in order to be economically competitive with rockets. What is that certain amount of traffic? In 2010, less than <1500 tons were put into orbit.

Rockets and spaceplanes will become more competitive with larger traffic into orbit. Less than half of the delta v can come from a rocket or hypersonic air breathing engine. Mass transportation system has to be buildable within the next 300 years.

This subject is currently under debate in the SpaceX subforum.  SpaceX has indicated they want to have 4 flights of the Falcon 9 in 2012.  That could be 3 flights with Dragon at the Cape and 1 non-dragon flight from Vandenburg.  How many do you actually expect the company to achieve this year?
