When is the shuttle due to arrive .. next spring?  They will still be arguing about idling buses six months from now.

That shuttle needs to go somewhere else until they sort this thing out.  Maybe they can have that 'palace' ready by 2020.

Oh, I'm sure Dayton can find some space for her somewhere... (hint, hint) ::)

Hanger 17 at JFK will probably have enough space by then. Of course, that means nobody will see the shuttle for years, but that is nothing new.

Oh, boy -- a chance to *not* see a shuttle!  That'll bring throngs of visitors, I'm sure ... ;)

Intrepid has started fundraising for the new addition:

Quote
We have liftoff on the quest for more than $40 million of public financing for a new museum that would house Enterprise, the prototype for the space shuttles.

Officials of the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in Manhattan have taken their pitch for government support of the proposed museum out from behind closed doors. To bolster their appeal, they have armed themselves with a study estimating that a museum focused on science and space exploration would draw hundreds of thousands of additional visitors to the city and create about 1,200 jobs. The study was commissioned by the museum.

Edit:  wow, perhaps another place is a better idea for the price tag:

Quote
Mr. Woods did not ask for a specific amount of help, but he said that the Intrepid hoped to “leverage public and private funds equally.” Afterward, he said the estimated cost of the project was $85 million.

NASA signs over shuttle Enterprise to New York City's Intrepid museum
http://www.collectspace.com/news/news-112311a.html

NASA's space shuttle Enterprise will land next summer on the flight deck of the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York City. The World War II aircraft-carrier-turned-museum took over ownership of the prototype winged orbiter on Tuesday (Nov. 22) in preparation for Enterprise's delivery in 2012.

NASA's Lynn Cline, the deputy associate administrator for human exploration and operations, turned over the title for Enterprise to Intrepid president Susan Marenoff-Zausner. The contract signing was publicly announced only after it was done, unlike the high-profile title-signing ceremony that was held last month to transfer shuttle Endeavour to the California Science Center in Los Angeles...

I am vaguely horrified at the thought of Enterprise sitting on the deck of the Intrepid in a 'tent'.

I appreciate that it may be climate controlled, but it is still a tent, next to a large body of water, in somewhat changeable climate conditions with no clear date for a move to somewhere a good deal more weatherproof.

I visited the Intrepid last month, and while the enthusiasm of those maintaining the small collection of aircraft perched on the deck is admirable, it really is no place for a Space Shuttle.

Hopefully sanity will prevail, and the move will be postponed (or Enterprise loaned to another museum until proper facilities can be constructed.)

I am going on my honeymoon in mid-March and me and the missus were hoping Enterprise would be there by then. Boo :(

I’m downright disgusted. I’m hearing echoes of the Memphis Belle ‘preservation’ debacle. In that case, the people tasked with the preservation of that WW2 B-17 Flying Fortress promised time and again to the USAF that they’d build a permanent, climate-controlled building for the bomber and instead set up an open-ended tent and kept crying that they couldn’t afford the building they promised. Meanwhile, the bomber slowly deteriorated as it was housed right next to the Mississippi River. The USAF often threatened to take the B-17 back and eventually they did, after realizing that the bomber would never be covered properly without intervention. The Intrepid foundation is already asking for public funds to build the building. I can’t help but agree with the critics who said the Enterprise would be best placed elsewhere as the criteria for the award of an orbiter was PROOF that the museums in question had the means to properly display them. Does this mean that NASA would pluck the Enterprise off the Intrepid’s flight deck if they too never get around to laying bricks for the promised building?
It just kills me to know there’s a purpose-built building sitting empty in Seattle right now, specifically constructed for an orbiter that NASA decided should instead go to a museum with no means to house it.

I wish they'd get someone like an astronaut - or someone more relevant - to do this functions. Garver is a pencil pusher who's done nothing but celebrate the end of shuttle.

Huh?  She is relevant, she is the deputy administrator.  An astronaut has little to do with this.

Sad to see that this is the best Intrepid is willing to do for her.  She deserves better.
