Orion Mock Up
« on: 01/19/2013 09:56 pm »
It was just sitting there all by it's lonesome. I couldn't help myself.

I am wondering if it is just a simple mockup for display or something more though. Its solid metal, with tape sealing the seams between the panels.

Huh.  I'm having trouble identifying it.  Not enough rivets to be old, but it doesn't look like anything recent either.  I'm going to guess mock-up, but I don't suppose you could clamber up and have a closer look?  Maybe take a few more pictures?

It looks similar to the Orion MPCV boilerplate test article used for drop testing in the Hydro Impact Basin at Langley.  Has the same taped up joins although the USA flag is missing and the optical tracking dots are not as dark.

Photos of test article attached - click to enlarge.

Yea I was thinking a boilerplate myself since a simple mockup doesn't have to be quite so robust.

Anyway a few more pics for you. Assuming it is still there Tuesday I could take a few more pics with my good camera but I'm not sure they'd show anything that would help.

I guess they could be using the boilerplate for display purposes now, hence all of the graphics slapped on.

Interesting.  Quick question, why is the thread title labeled "for sale"?  :)

Go back to the first post & take a look at the picture -- there's a "for sale" sign on it ... ;)

Haha totally missed that.  :D Is it really for sale or is that a tongue and cheek type of thing?

I do wonder which joker slapped the 'for sale' sign on it, though. :D

Indeed  ;D

Good to see they managed to get 295 reopened for the move. Earlier Saturday they had it closed right at this point as I was attempting to head to the Smithsonian NASM to do some volunteering. I had to divert onto Pennsylvania Ave after that to get to downtown which was not fun with all the craziness.
