During press-conference at GCTC today Sunita Williams has answered to my question about US EVA-18. It will be (more likely) at the end of August. Spacewalkers will be Williams and Hoshide. Tasks will be: MBSU-1 replace; route of electrical cables on USOS for power of MLM; camera replace; PMA-2 cover installation; something with camera on JEM.

The camera replace will be either the SSRMS end B CLPA (Camera, Light & Pan/tilt Assembly) R&R, or the CP-7 (Camera Position-7) ETVCG (External TV Camera Group) R&R.

The PMA-2 cover install will be the same type of cover as was installed on PMA-3 back on STS-135.

I'm surprised they aren't also going to perform the FGB PDGF grounding wire reconfig and associated 1553 cable install - I believe that was the highest priority deferred task from the STS-135 EVA.

That was before MBSU partial failure and camera degradation. I guess they are more important tasks and there simply wasn't room for the FGB task. Is the FGB PDGF really needed at the moment?

something with camera on JEM.

This task is one of JEM EF TV camera R&R. One of get ahead tasks.

Really?!

If that's possible, why do they normally "hang around" in orbit for a couple of days before docking?

Has there been some change in the system to allow this to happen?

Why is it not happening on later flights?

This particular flight is testing a new fast rendezvous profile, which, if successful, could be used on later Soyuz/Progress flights.

According to Novosti kosmonavtiki forum, Progress M-17M will dock to ISS in six hours after launch, but his launch should be moved up for this purpose. Also Soyuz will possibly use fast rendezvous profile in spring 2013.
