I believe it's the turbo-pump exhaust.  see here:  Atlas_MA-drive-system

That is the booster engine turbopump exhaust and it did provide a couple thousand pounds of thrust. Nothing actually significant enough to add extra propulsive power though. The sustainer turbopump had its own exhaust duct but it was flush with the engine nozzle and not really visible. This diagram illustrates it a bit better and you can see that the sustainer turbopump exhaust was simply dumped into the main engine nozzle and mixed with its exhaust.

Most Atlases had one exhaust duct, the Atlas E/F had two of them because the booster engines had their own separate outboard pumps instead of a common pump assembly mounted in the central thrust chamber.

Interesting to see the huge effort in production and test.

BTW, HACL 01811 runs backward and upside-down.

HACL 01839 shows Atlas 5E which carried out a successful ABRES test from LC-11 at CCAS on February 25, 1964. Two months later, Atlas 137F performed the last East Coast ABRES launch before the program was completely moved to VAFB.

In 01842, we see Missile 65D which carried out an ABRES test from 576-B2 at VAFB on July 6, 1967. This was the last year for flights of repurposed D-series missiles, with five successful ABRES launches and one OV-1 satellite (the kick motor failed and it didn't attain orbit).

I saw an unusual clip of these rockets filmed at Vandenberg AFB in 1961.  It was an episode of Perry Mason filmed there.   In one scene you get to see one of these Atlas rockets lying on its side going through an engine gimbal test.  The two Rocketdyne Engines on each side go through a preprogrammed pattern while the center sustainer engine doesn't move.  There are clips of test flights.  You get to see what Vandenberg looked like back then.  I was surprised how much access a TV show was given.

A short description of the episode can be found here:

The lettering on the picture is 55D.

Noted and fixed. Apparently there isn't a photo of 65D anywhere and I should have noticed the RV was incorrect for an ABRES launch.
