PALO ALTO, Calif. – August 15, 2013 — Space Systems/Loral (SSL), a leading provider of commercial satellites, today named its undisclosed customer for a multi-mission communications satellite announced on July 18, 2013. The satellite is being manufactured for Brazilian satellite operator Star One, a subsidiary of Embratel, a leading telecommunication company from Brazil.

The satellite, named Star One D1, is equipped with C-, Ku-, and Ka-band payloads and will be used for telecommunications, television broadcast, broadband, Internet access, and other services such as digital inclusion in Brazil and in the Latin American region. Star One D1 will be the first satellite of Star One's fourth generation and will support the Olympic Games in 2016 that will take place in Rio de Janeiro, since Embratel, in a co-participation with Claro, has been selected as the Official Telecommunication Sponsor for this worldwide event.

“We are very pleased to have this opportunity to help Star One provide much needed services that will improve the human experience in Brazil and throughout Latin America,” said John Celli, president of SSL. “This is the second satellite that we are building for Star One, and there is no better endorsement of our success than a customer returning to work with us again. Star One D1 is based on the highly reliable SSL 1300 satellite platform that provides the flexibility for a broad range of applications and technology advances. It will be located at 84 degrees West longitude and is scheduled for launch in early 2016. The satellite is designed to deliver service for 15 years or more.

Brazilian operator Embratel-Star One and U.S. satellite manufacturer Space Systems/Loral have chosen Arianespace to launch the Embratel-Star One D1 satellite.

Arianespace announced today the signature of a launch contract for the Embratel-Star One D1 satellite for Brazilian operator Star One, a subsidiary of Embratel. Star One D1 will be launched by an Ariane 5 rocket from the Guiana Space Center, Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana, in 2016.

11th launch for Embratel-Star One

Star One D1 is the 11th Embratel-Star One satellite to choose an Ariane launch, following six Brasilsat satellites and Star One C1, C2, C3 and C4. Embratel-Star One is the largest regional satellite services operator in Latin America. Built by Space Systems/Loral in Palo Alto, California using an SSL 1300 platform, Star One D1 will weigh 6,000 kg at launch.

It will be positioned in geostationary orbit at 84 degrees West. Equipped with Ku and C-band transponders, it will deliver telecommunications and direct-to-home TV broadcast services in South America and North America. It is the first Star One satellite to be fitted with Ka-band transponders for broadband services.

This latest contract confirms Arianespace’s leadership in the Brazilian market and its position as the global benchmark in launch services. Nine satellites have already been successfully launched for Embratel/Star One and a tenth one is in our backlog. Embratel-Star One D1, the 11th contract, confirms the excellent relationship between Arianespace and Brazil.

Following the signature of the launch contract, Arianespace Chairman and CEO Stéphane Israël said: “We are especially proud of this opportunity to once again work with Embratel, following the successful launches of the Brasilsat and Star One satellites. “We are very honored that SKY Perfect JSAT has entrusted SSL to build its next two satellites,” said John Celli, president of SSL. “Our first satellite for SKY Perfect JSAT began construction last June and we believe there is no better endorsement of our success than repeat orders from a satisfied customer. The two satellites are designed to be used for services such as video distribution, data transfer communications, and back-up service capabilities in Japan and neighboring regions. They both operate in Ku-band and provide switching for flexibility.

JCSAT-15 is a 10-kW satellite which will be located at 110 degrees East longitude where it replaces the
 N-SAT110 satellite currently on orbit. In addition to providing legacy service it will also provide expansion capability and it is designed with the flexibility to adjust its coverage of Japan and the Indian Ocean Region to serve the areas with the highest demand. 

JCSAT-16 is an 8.5-kW satellite which is designed to be used at a broad range of orbital locations.  When launched it will ensure continuous service and it will be available as a back-up to the existing fleet.

JCSAT-15 will be launched by Ariane 5 in 2016 from the Europe’s Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana.

For the quarter century since the launch of JCSAT-1 in 1989, SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation, one of the world’s leading operators, and Arianespace have developed a strong relationship of mutual trust. This new satellite will be the 29th Japanese satellite launched by Arianespace.

Built by Space Systems/Loral based on the SSL1300 platform, JCSAT-15 is designed for a minimum operational lifetime of 15 years. Weighing about 3,400kg at launch, main coverage of JCSAT-15 will include Japan, Oceania and the Indian Ocean.

PALO ALTO, Calif. – October 28, 2016 — Space Systems Loral (SSL), a leading provider of innovative satellites and spacecraft systems, today announced that the JCSAT-15 satellite, which it designed and built for SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation (SKY Perfect JSAT), has arrived at the European Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, where it will be launched aboard an Ariane 5 launch vehicle by Arianespace. The satellite, which is currently being prepared for launch, will be used to provide broadcasting and communications services in Japan, Oceania, and the Indian Ocean Region.

Star One D1 arrives for Arianespace’s heavy-lift Ariane 5 flight in December with two SSL-built satellites

Arianespace’s year-ending heavy-lift flight of 2016 from the Spaceport will orbit two passengers based on the SSL 1300 relay platform built by Space Systems Loral (SSL), with the second of these spacecraft now delivered to French Guiana.

The Star One D1 satellite arrived this week aboard a chartered An-124 cargo jetliner, which landed at Félix Eboué International Airport near French Guiana’s capital city of Cayenne. It now has begun the pre-launch preparation process at the Spaceport – joining JCSAT-15, which arrived in French Guiana late last month.

Star One D1 is the largest satellite ever built for Brazil’s Embratel Star One, and is to be positioned at 84° West for a planned operational lifetime of 15 years. It will complement the service provided by Embratel Star One’s Brasilsat B4 satellite – launched by Arianespace in 1994, extending operations in C Band, in addition to bringing new capacities in Ku-band for Latin America and Ka-band for Brazil.

Star One D1: the first D family satellite

With an estimated liftoff mass targeted at 6,433 kg., Star One D1 marks the beginning of Embratel Star One’s fourth-generation satellites, the D family.

Its C-band relay capacity will handle voice, TV, radio, and data – including Internet. The satellite’s Ku-band enables video transmission services directly to users, along with Internet, data and telephony to remote locations. Ka-band provides access to lower-cost broadband and high-speed data transmission for corporate networks and cellular backhaul.

The Ariane 5 mission with Star One D1 is designated Flight VA234 in Arianespace’s launch family numbering system, and its JCSAT-15 co-passenger was produced by SSL for Japan’s SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation. Operating in Ku-band, JCSAT-15 will be used to support the SKY PerfecTV! multichannel pay TV service in Japan, and also is to provide data transfer communications and maritime and aviation applications for the Oceania and Indian Ocean Region.

Arianespace’s 11th launch of the year to orbit satellites for Brazil and Japan


December 14, 2016 – For its 11th launch of the year, and the seventh with an Ariane 5 from the Guiana Space Center in French Guiana during 2016, Arianespace will orbit two satellites: Star One D1 for the private operator Embratel Star One, and JCSAT-15 for Sky Perfect JSAT Corporation.

 For the second time this year, Arianespace will orbit two Space Systems Loral-built satellites (SSL) on the same Ariane 5 launcher.

The launch will be from Ariane Launch Complex No. 3 (ELA 3) in Kourou, French Guiana.

The Launch Readiness Review (LRR) will take place on Monday, December 19, 2016 in Kourou, to authorize the start of operations for the final countdown.

 Following the launch of Star One C4 in July 2015, Star One D1 will be the 11th satellite orbited by Arianespace for the private operator Embratel Star One.

 Embratel Star One is the largest satellite operator in Latin America.

 Star One D1 is the initial fourth-generation satellite to be deployed by this operator. It will handle different missions, including broadcasting, broadband, Internet access and other digital applications.

 Star One D1 will be positioned at 84 degrees West. It will cover Brazil, Latin America, Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean.

 Star One D1 was built by SSL (Space Systems Loral) using an SSL 1300 platform, in Palo Alto, California. It will be the 60th SSL satellite launched by Arianespace.

 Following the launch of JCSAT-13 in May 2012, JCSAT-15 will be the 18th Sky Perfect JSAT satellite assigned to Arianespace for launch.

 SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation is a leader in the converging fields of broadcasting and communications. It is Asia’s largest satellite operator with a fleet of 17 satellites. SKY Perfect JSAT is a provider of both multi-channel pay TV broadcasting and satellite communications services.

 JCSAT-15 will offer a range of communications services for Japan, including broadcasting, data transfer, and maritime and aeronautical applications for the Oceania and Indian Ocean region.

 Located at 110 degrees East longitude, it will replace the N-SAT-110 satellite launched in 2000 by Arianespace.

 JCSAT-15 was built by SSL (Space Systems Loral) using an SSL 1300 platform, in Palo Alto, California. It will be the 61st SSL satellite to be launched by Arianespace.

Ariane 5 is ready to receive its two payloads for the seventh Arianespace heavy-lift launch of 2016

Final integration begins today for Arianespace’s year-ending Ariane 5 mission as the Star One D1 and JCSAT-15 satellites are installed on the heavy-lift launcher for its December 21 liftoff from the Spaceport in French Guiana.

Designated Flight VA234 in Arianespace’s launcher family numbering system, the mission will be the launch services company’s 11th liftoff in 2016 and the year’s seventh using an Ariane 5. It also is to mark the second time this year that Arianespace has launched two passengers built by Space Systems Loral (SSL) together on an Ariane 5.

The heavy-lift vehicle will carry a total payload of approximately 10,720 kg. and is to deploy its Star One D1 and JCSAT-15 satellites into geostationary transfer orbit during a flight lasting just over 43 minutes.

Upper and lower passengers for Ariane 5’s dual launch

To be installed today atop Ariane 5 is JCSAT-15 for Japanese operator SKY Perfect JSAT Corp. Once in orbit, its relay duties will be broadcasting the multi-channel pay TV service SKY PerfecTV! across Japan, as well providing data transfer communications and maritime/aviation applications for the Oceania and Indian Ocean regions.

JCSAT-15 replaces the N-SAT-110 satellite launched in 2000 by Arianespace, with the new spacecraft’s orbital location set for 110 degrees East longitude.

Star One D1 – contained in Ariane 5’s SYLDA dispenser system and protected in a long version of Ariane 5’s ogive-shaped payload fairing – is to be positioned atop JCSAT-15, completing the payload integration process.  The Star One D1 relay platform is the largest satellite ever built for Brazil’s Embratel Star One.

When operational at its geostationary orbital position of 84 to 75 degrees West, Star One D1 will complement the service provided by Embratel Star One’s Brasilsat B4 satellite – launched by Arianespace in 1994 – extending operations in C-Band and bringing new capacities in Ku-band for Latin America and Ka-band for Brazil.

Arianespace’s year-ending Ariane 5 launch is “go” for liftoff

The 11th Arianespace mission of 2016 has been given the go-ahead for its December 21 liftoff from the Spaceport in French Guiana, carrying the Star One D1 and JCSAT-15 satellites for deployment into geostationary transfer orbit.


This year-ending flight will mark the seventh of an Ariane 5 in 2016, and is the second time during the year that Arianespace will orbit two passengers built by U.S. spacecraft manufacturer Space Systems Loral (SSL) on the same heavy-lift Ariane 5 launcher.

The go-ahead for the mission was granted after the Launch Readiness Review, which validated the “go” status of the launch vehicle and its two payloads, along with the Spaceport’s infrastructure and the network of tracking stations.

A heavy-lift delivery for Ariane 5

Total payload lift performance for Wednesday’s early evening liftoff is approximately 10,720 kg., with the Star One D1 and JCSAT-15 satellites being deployed during a flight lasting just over 43 minutes. The mission is designated Flight VA234 in Arianespace’s launcher family numbering system, signifying the 234th with an Ariane family vehicle.

Positioned in Ariane 5’s upper passenger position, protected by the launcher’s ogive-shaped payload fairing is the Star One D1 relay platform for Brazil’s Embratel Star One. Once operational at its geostationary orbital position of 84 to 75 deg. West, Star One D1 will complement the service provided by Embratel Star One’s Brasilsat B4 satellite (launched by Arianespace in 1994), extending operations in C-Band and bringing new capacities in Ku-band for Latin America and Ka-band for Brazil.

JCSAT-15 is Flight VA234’s lower passenger, contained in Ariane 5’s SYLDA dispenser system. This spacecraft will be utilized by Japanese operator SKY Perfect JSAT Corp. to broadcast the multi-channel pay TV service SKY PerfecTV! across Japan, as well provide data transfer communications and maritime/aviation applications for the Oceania and Indian Ocean regions.
