Interesting that a CDRA bed is not going up on Dragon.  Usually one comes down when one goes up (isn't special mounting hardware required in Dragon due to mass?) so now a unit needs to come back. At some point, won't empty mounting equipment need to go up on Dragon?

Edit:  According to the Space X 2 cargo manifest, 2 CDRA beds (and some assorted other minor hardware) weighed 298 pounds so they aren't as heavy as I thought.

Fuji how sure are you about this? What is your source?
To my knowledge 5-6 ISPR's are menifested to launch:
2 or 3 Basic Express Racks (EX-9B; EX-10B; EX-11B)
A NASA glove box, LSG (Live Science Glovebox) or MSG-2
The WSS Water Stowage System rack
And ESA's 2015-2016 contribution ACLS (Advanced Close Loop System) {HTV-7 to LAB P6}.

Could the water be launched inside the WSS? And could a BER be on the manifest.
ESA has set reported ACLS is manifested for HTV-7. I assumed WSS would share that launch.
I also expected two science racks (BER or Glovebox) on HTV-6 and HTV-8.

Are the named payloads filling all the 6mT HTV payload mass budget?
I don't think so.
Six Li-ion batteries will be close to the 1,5mT external budget.
Then there remains 4,5mT for internal payloads,
with 1mT for the WSS and 600L of water, and 500kg for the CDRA,
I'm still missing 3mT

ISS batteries loaded into KOUNOTORI6 (English)

Last Updated: July 26, 2016

From June 1-2, the operations for loading the ISS battery Orbital Replacement Units (ORUs) into the H-II Transfer Vehicle KOUNOTORI6 and filling the water bags were unveiled to the press at the Tanegashima Space Center (TNSC).

On the ISS, the batteries are charged with electricity generated by the solar panels and used when the ISS travels through shadow areas. Sets of nickel metal-hydride batteries made in the U.S. were used on the ISS, but given the approaching end of their service life, a new type of Japanese lithium-ion battery was adopted as the replacement.

Sets of new batteries that KOUNOTORI6 delivers are manufactured by GS Yuasa Technology Ltd, and feature a service life lasting nearly 10 years. Although 48 battery ORUs are currently used on the ISS, the new battery ORUs can provide enough power with only 24 battery ORUs.

KOUNOTORI6 will deliver six battery ORUs (each weigh 250 kg) this time, with the rest to be delivered aboard KOUNOTORI7-9. Currently, only the HTV can deliver a large number of ISS battery ORUs

Unveiling to the press included the introduction of water-filling equipment that transfers potable water to fill the water bags (Contingency Water Container Iodine: CWC-I) for delivery to the ISS.

This water-filling equipment was also used to fill a total of 600 liters of Tanegashima island water in 30 dedicated water bags that were loaded into the Pressurized Logistics Carrier (PLC) of KOUNOTORI6.

Through the delivery of batteries and water by the HTV missions, Japanese space development activities serve as the backbone of ISS operations.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) decided to postpone the launch of the H-IIB Launch Vehicle No. 6 with the H-II Transfer Vehicle “KOUNOTORI6” (HTV6) onboard from the Tanegashima Space Center, which was scheduled for October 1 (Sat.), 2016 (Japan Standard Time), as unfavorable.

The new launch date will be announced as soon as it is determined.

(Reason for the delay)
A slight leak was detected from piping of the HTV6 during an air tightness test. The test is part of HTV6 launch preparations at the launch site. We will disband the HTV6 module and take necessary measures.

MEDIA ADVISORY M16-140

NASA TV Coverage Set for Japanese Cargo Ship Destined for Space Station

The launch of a Japanese cargo ship to the International Space Station, and its arrival at the orbiting laboratory, will be broadcast Dec. 9 and 13 on NASA Television and the agency’s website.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) is scheduled to launch its H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV)-6 at 8:26 a.m. EST (10:26 p.m. Japan time) Friday, Dec. 9, from the Tanegashima Space Center in southern Japan. NASA TV coverage of the launch will begin at 7:45 a.m.

Loaded with more than 4.5 tons of supplies, water, spare parts and experiment hardware for the six-person station crew, the unpiloted cargo spacecraft, named “Kounotori” – the Japanese word for white stork – will set sail on a four-day flight to the station. Also aboard the resupply vehicle are six new lithium-ion batteries and adapter plates that will replace the nickel-hydrogen batteries currently used on the station to store electrical energy generated by the station’s solar arrays. These will be installed during a series of spacewalks currently scheduled in January.

On Tuesday, Dec. 13, the HTV-6 will approach the station from below, and slowly inch its way toward the complex. Expedition 50 Commander Shane Kimbrough of NASA and Flight Engineer Thomas Pesquet of ESA (European Space Agency) will operate the station’s Canadarm2 robotic arm from the station’s cupola to reach out and grapple the 12-ton spacecraft and install it on the Earth-facing side of the Harmony module, where it will spend more than five weeks. Flight Engineer Peggy Whitson of NASA will monitor HTV-6 systems during the rendezvous and grapple.

NASA TV coverage of the Dec. 13 rendezvous and grapple will begin at 4:30 a.m. Capture of the spacecraft is scheduled around 6 a.m. Coverage of the final installation to Harmony will resume at 9:15 a.m.

From the research I've done; H-III doesn't seem to be any more powerful than H-IIB - just designed to be cheaper and faster to deploy.

Japanese Cargo Ship Sets Sail on Resupply Run to the International Space Station

NASA

Published on Dec 9, 2016
The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency’s H-IIB rocket launched Dec. 9 from the Tanegashima (pron: Tan-uh-GAH-shuh-mah) Space Center in southern Japan carrying the unpiloted “Kounotori” H-II Transfer Vehicle-6 (HTV-6) to orbit to begin a four-day journey to the International Space Station. The resupply craft is loaded with some 4 ˝ tons of food, supplies and experiments for the Expedition 50 crewmembers on the complex, including a set of new lithium-ion batteries to enhance the station’s power supply that will be installed during a series of robotic operations and spacewalks planned for December and January.

Yes, these and TechEdSat-5 are part of the Nanoracks NRCSD-10 payload that will use the JEM airlock.
That's 5 x 3U identified; usually NRCSDs have 16 x 3U. Possibly the rest are Planet Flock sats, although
they are mostly moving to their operational sats in their sunsync orbits.

The assembly on the end mass surrounded by the gold MLI appears to be a standard seven element laser retroreflector array for tracking by ground based laser rangefinders.  There are also two quarter-sphere arrays below the MLI (as seen in the video) for tracking from below.

My guess is the ones on top will only be used after the end mass is free and tumbling.

It looks like the end mass is pushed out by a spring and tows the cable, rather than it being played out slowly.  There is no spooling mechanism shown.  It will be very interesting to see if they can get this to deploy successfully.

It really would be good to get a translation of the Japanese.   I will check with my source for such.

So my source, with high school and college Japanese, did some translating of the labels in the video.
They discuss orbital debris, and talk about the KITE experiment being done after the HTV leaves the ISS.
They call the device an electrical "taser".
The tether is 700 meters long.
There is a disclaimer that, for the purposes of easy explanation, the cable is not shown at full length.
The "taser" end mass is ejected by a big spring.
(Opinion: This seems way too simplistic and uncontrolled.  Let's hope there are more cable guides than shown.)
In the end mass there is a brake on the cable to effect a smooth stop.
There are optical cameras and a lidar, which may be the same one used for rendezvous with the ISS.
(It looks like about a 15-20 degree square field of view in the video.)
The lidar tracks the end mass and the HTV Kounotori changes attitude to keep it pointed at the end mass as it swings around.
There are boxes for data storage, and electrical power supply, and command and data handling.
There is a diagnostic box with a large D connector.
The electron emitter (literally "electric child launch type") couples to the plasma.
There seem to be two of these of different sizes, one with a cover that opens.
When the current flows up the wire, and the Earth's magnetic field lines cross the velocity direction, the Lorentz force acts as a drag.
They plan to turn the current on and off and sense the creation and cessation of the Lorentz force.
At the end of the experiment the cable is severed.  Kounotori reenters the atmosphere, followed by the end mass a few months later.
JAXA plans on using the KITE method to deorbit large space debris.

Nice
Thanks
There are still pieces missing
Why are there retroreflectors on the "top" of the end mass?  HTV-6 can't see those.
There are a lot of unexplained details about how the tether will play out and the brake engage and function. That would worry me extensively. There is no value to KITE if the tether snaps like many previous tethers.

Here is a paper on KITE from last summer and a slide deck on orbital debris with description, near the end, of KITE.

In the paper abstract it states definitively that the end mass will be "deployed from the HTV body toward the zenith" as illustrated.  This confirms that the retroreflectors that will be external to HTV before deployment cannot be seen by the HTV lidar unless the end mass tumbles.

Does anyone know a way to follow progress once the experiment starts after HTV-6 departs the ISS around Jan 20?

Chris, will KITE updates be on this or a new one?

I'm wondering how far from real-time updates on KITE will be released. Tether experiments haven't had a great success rate, after all. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_tether_missions

There are HTV-6 Mission Status updates on this page: https://directory.eoportal.org/web/eoportal/satellite-missions/h/htv-6

The last one was on 17 January 2017:
Quote
January 17, 2017: ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet completed his first spacewalk last Friday (Jan 13, 2016) together with NASA astronaut Shane Kimbrough to complete a battery upgrade to the outpost's power system. 17)

- One of the impracticalities of a spacewalk is that everything must be secured or tied down or it will float away – including the astronauts themselves. For any work requiring two hands astronauts must install a restraint for their feet in order to stay in contact with the Space Station.

- Astronauts on a spacewalk have two tethers, much like rock climbers, to stop them from floating away if they ever lose hold. A belt tether is clipped from rail to rail as they ‘walk' across the Station's exterior. A second self-reeling tether connects them to the airlock, seen in this picture extending from behind Thomas' left foot. If need be, they can follow this tether back to the airlock – ESA astronaut Luca Parmitano used this to return inside after his helmet filled with water and he was unable to see properly during a spacewalk in 2013.

- The spacewalk went as planned and, even better, Shane and Thomas performed a number of extra tasks once they had installed the batteries. They retrieved a failed camera, installed a protective cover on an unused docking port, moved handrails in preparation for future spacewalks and took pictures of external facilities for ground control. The duo spent five hours and 58 minutes outside the International Space Station.

No updates on KITE or the unberth/release.

Simplified and still future tense, although it says the tether deployment should have occurred at 10PM (Japan time?) yesterday.

"JAXA will attach a metallic rope, known as a "tether," to the spacecraft. By electrifying the extended tether, it is thought that this will cause a reaction with the Earth's magnetic field, which in turn, should create a brake-like force. Consequently, the altitude of the space debris is expected to drop -- due to the Earth's gravitational pull."

In contemplating the tethered system dynamics, this discussion I wrote for NASA in 1986 may be helpful.

http://www.jamesoberg.com/fph-Tethered_ops.PDF

In the section on passive gravity gradient stabilization I referred to mid-1980's studies that suggested that it required a vertical separation of at least 4000 ft [1200 meters], almost twice the planned 700 meter separation for KITE.

Did captuer a nice bright flare off the HTV 6 as it was running about a minute ahead of the ISS as the HTV passed near Mars and Venus which is the bright stars on the right of the image the other evening. Not the best picture but we tried.

So far  as we know no ground observers have seen the tether.
Also very  puzzled by the extremely bright flare we observed on the evening here of Jan 27 from the HTV 6. We have two more chance to see if we can see the tether on the evenings of Jan.31 and Feb.1  but the passes are not well timed for our location since it no long after sunset only into Nautical twilight and they are low passes. Thanks very much for the information we will keep trying.

That was apparent upon reading your terrific old report.
KITE does not seem to contain sophisticated mechanical controls.
The only possibility apparent is to compensate with active damping, which could be done with sufficiently sophisticated modeling and control systems using the lidar and cameras.

Then there is Fuji's post, which suggests whatever they tried is inadequate:

KITE experiment has troubled tether extension. JAXA  will try to resolve this problem until February 4th.

Or perhaps they just can't get it to release from HTV-6.

Any chance they hit the guillotine command before deorbiting, just in case? What kind of visual or radar object would the 700m tether and small end node, make?

Scaling from the hemispherical retroreflector, which is about 175 mm across (IIRC) with 25 mm solid "corner cube" reflectors, it's well over the nominal 10 cm resolution of ground based radar.

However, none of the simple places I search (n2yo, Heavens-Above, Stuffin.space) show a separate object (2016-076B) from the launch of HTV-6.  With absolutely no information found to date, beyond the statement of having trouble, my assumption is that the tether was never released.

All that effort into the electron emitters and voltage and current monitors and the cameras and lidar, and they may have failed where so many others have, which was an inability to play out the line.

I wonder if they will get another chance on a future HTV.  Perhaps they could concentrate on just deploying the tether first, and worry about current and electro-motive forces later.

From what my extremely bad Japanese reading skills can tell, they never managed to deploy the tether, though the electron generator was tested without problems.

P2
We succeeded in stably generating the current flow by autonomously controlling the function of emitting electrons from the field emission type electron source and the voltage of the field emission type electron source.

We confirmed that the charging state of "KOUNOTORI" changes as expected by emitted electrons, and demonstrated the effectiveness of field emission type electron source.

P3

1. Background and results
January 28 21:35 (Japan time, same below)
Prior to endmass emission, cutting of the four bolts holding the end mass is started.
Only the No. 3 bolt does not indicate "disconnection" even if a disconnection command is sent, and sends a disconnection instruction multiple times.
After the command, after a few minutes it became "disconnected", so continue the experiment preparation.
January 28 22:35
End-mass release ready
January 29 00:08
End Mass emission command transmission. It can not be discharged.
After that, further troubleshooting was done, and until the end of the experiment on February 5,
We tried to release but could not discharge.

2. Cause investigation situation
Currently, we investigate the data obtained during the experiment and are investigating the cause.
One of the four bolts fixing the endmass is not separated and the endmass is solved
I think that the possibility that it is not released is the highest.

Great plot by Jonathan (jcm) on Twitter about orbital decay of different ISS-related objects, including the drag sail demonstrators in HTV-6:

https://twitter.com/planet4589/status/879574752972636160

Quote from: JonathanMcDowell
New plot: orbital decay of objects ejected from ISS in 2017. Green: ISS. The blue objects are cubesats; the magenta are cubesats which successfully deployed drag devices to accelerate reentry (FREEDOM, EGG, TES5). The red line indicates the ACBM shield lost during an EVA on Mar 30. Coming down faster than cubesats but still pretty slow. The cyan line is an unidentified debris object which separated from ISS on about May 6. Notice its decay rate v similar to the ACBM shield. Note bottom of y axis is 350 km, not 0, to show different decay rates clearly. I know some of you consider this naughty graphing but IDC :-) I'm guessing (wildly) that the ROSA array will decay at a similar rate to the ACBM shield, so will be up for order 6 months. Oh, and of course the little kinks you can see in the green line at top are the ISS reboosting its orbit. There's also some false data for the most recent batch of cubesats near the start of their curves.
