All kidding aside, this is a "put up or shut up" moment for NASA.  They claimed the UFO incident was caused by a re-entering Venera spacecraft, but had no evidence to show for it.  People who have looked at the ephemeris of the aforementioned Venera spacecraft claim that it's impossible.  If NASA truly believes it's own explanation, I'd like to see the evidence.  I'm more inclined to think the incident was caused by a shooting star.
"Black Zones" never stopped NASA from flying the shuttle.

Now I seem to remember how a ZOND was responsible for UFO reports--but it couldn't have been the ZOND itself because that came back up from the south to head north to the USSR IIRC.

Perhaps it was a Proton upper stage.  LVs leave behind jellyfish looking contrails on occasion.
