NASA Concludes Summer of RS-25 Testing

Quote
NASA Stennis
Published on Aug 30, 2017

NASA engineers closed a summer of hot fire testing Aug. 30 for flight controllers on RS-25 engines that will help power the new Space Launch System (SLS) rocket being built to carry astronauts to deep-space destinations, including Mars. The 500-second hot fire an RS-25 engine flight controller unit on the A-1 Test Stand at Stennis Space Center near Bay St. Louis, Mississippi marked another step toward the nation’s return to human deep-space exploration missions.

Public Invited to Stennis Space Center Open House/Engine Test Viewing
RELEASE S17-070, Sept. 26, 2017

The public is invited to attend a Founder’s Day Open House on Oct. 19, 2017, at NASA’s Stennis Space Center. The day’s activities will include an opportunity to view a test firing of an RS-25 flight engine.

The theme for the event is “SSC – 56 Years of Making Fire and Rain!” to commemorate the anniversary of the rocket engine test site. NASA announced plans on Oct. 25, 1961, to build a site in south Mississippi for testing the Apollo Program rocket stages that carried humans to the moon.

Security gates will be open for access to the site from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Since all activities will be located within the Stennis test complex area, only U.S. citizens age 10 or older will be allowed to participate.

Open house activities – including activities, exhibits, demonstrations and speakers – will be hosted by participating Stennis agencies prior to an afternoon test of RS-25 flight engine No. 2063 on the A-1 Test Stand. The engine is being tested for use by NASA’s new Space Launch System (SLS), being built to carry humans to deep-space destinations, including Mars. It is scheduled to be one of the four engines that will help power the launch of SLS on Exploration Mission-2, which will be the first flight of the new rocket to carry humans.

Food and drinks will be available for purchase. Personal coolers will not be allowed on site. Participants may bring collapsible chairs that are bagged and can be carried in one’s lap on the bus.

A limited number of free Open House tickets are available online at: https://ssc-open-house.eventbrite.com. Each participant must obtain a ticket to gain entry to the site. In addition to the pass, participants age 16 or older must show a picture ID (driver’s license or passport) for entry.

On Oct. 19, participants should proceed to either the south or north security gates at Stennis Space Center. Once cleared for entry, they will be directed to a central parking location, where buses will transport them into the test complex area.

For additional information about Open House, contact the Office of Communications at:

[email protected] or 228-688-3333

For information about Stennis Space Center, visit:

http://www.nasa.gov/centers/stennis/

Media members wishing to attend the event should contact NASA News Chief Valerie Buckingham at 228-688-3898 by noon Wednesday, Oct. 18, to arrange for security clearance and escort.

‘Two For the Show’ – NASA Installs 2nd RS-25 Flight Engine for Testing
LaToya Dean - October 3, 2017

RS-25 flight engine E2063 is delivered and lifted into place onto the A-1 Test Stand at Stennis Space Center on Sept. 27 in preparation for an Oct. 19 hotfire test. Once tested and certified, the engine is scheduled to help power NASA’s new Space Launch System (SLS) on its Exploration Mission-2 (EM-2), which will be the first flight of the new rocket to carry humans. The hotfire test is planned during a public Founders Day Open House event at Stennis, giving thousands of visitors the chance to view a flight engine test in person. The E2063 engine is the second SLS flight engine tested at Stennis. The E2059 engine was tested on the A-1 stand on March 10, 2016, also for use on the EM-2 flight. Stennis has been testing new flight engine controllers for use by engines on both the Exploration Mission-1 and EM-2 launches of the SLS rocket as well. It also will test the SLS core stage that will fly on the EM-1 mission. The SLS is being built to carry humans to deep-space destinations, including Mars.

Article updated. The test did not run through to full duration. Facility issue caused an abort with 70 seconds to go. Not a big issue. Engine not at fault and all objectives completed.
