Someone spotted a convoy shipping what appears to be two satellites over the hill roads of Tanegashima island on the night of October 15 - could this be the two satellites?

Is there any reasonable chance of this being launched before the new year?

I thought the Japanese has stopped the use of the SSBs when MHI took over the operation of the H-IIA? (see the Japanese reference at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H-IIA)

You are right, i completely forgot about that.

As the dual launches of IGS satellites were all too heavy for the 202 version, i guess, that a 204 is the most likely version.

As the dual launches of IGS satellites were all too heavy for the 202 version, i guess, that a 204 is the most likely version.

I guess, that a 204 is doubtful.
IGS 1A/1B, IGS-2A/2B and IGS 4A/4B (IGS Optical-3 demo) were dual launched. These are 2024 configuration, but now SRB-A is upgraded to SRB-A3, so launch capability is increased more.

Hard to say for sure - this page reports overcast skies on that day with some chance of raining.

Confirmed by the Mr. koumei Shibata's Twitter information.

H-IIA F22 is 202 configuration with 4/4D-LC fairing.
1st deploy the IGS radar-4 and 2nd deploy the IGS Optical-5 demo satellite.

From various newspaper reports and even budget reports (via the omnipotent Wiki, Japanese version), here are some out open reports about the spysats:

- the radar satellite is of the same type launched in Dec. 2011 (IGS-R3), probably with a resolution of less than a meter. The cost of development and production of IGS-R3 was 39.8b yen (+ 10.3b yen launch costs), and apparently the cost IGS-R4 has been reduced by 15.4b yen.

- the optical satellite is a new generation demo satellite with a 2 year designed life. Back in 2009 Yomiuri Shimbun reported that this generation of satellites may reach a maximum of 40 cm resolution, putting it ahead of satellites like Geoeye-1 and perhaps only second to the current Keyholes....

From the photos is it now clear this vehicle is flying in the "202" configuration? Also is it possible this vehicle includes any of the enhancements planned for the H-IIA upgrade program (long coast, clampband payload attach, onboard nav for range safety)?

H-IIB (which launches HTV) is actually taller, but H-IIA is "finer" (skinnier).

Note that to avoid falling rocket stage over the Philippines, all SSO launches out of TNSC must fly a dog-leg trajectory: heading south-east until SRB separation, then yaw something like 90 degrees towards south for the remainder of the flight.

The performance of the H-IIA (202) to a 800 km SSO is about 4400 kg - higher than the Delta II but lower than the smallest Atlas V / Delta IV / Soyuz-Fregat.

    From the photos is it now clear this vehicle is flying in the "202" configuration? Also is it possible this vehicle includes any of the enhancements planned for the H-IIA upgrade program (long coast, clampband payload attach, onboard nav for range safety)?
