ISS-65 crews successfully passed comprehensive exams

03/23/2021 03:30

The main and backup crews of the long-term expedition ISS-65 have completed exam complex trainings. On March 22, 2021, the crew of Oleg Novitsky worked on the simulator of the Russian segment of the International Space Station, and the backup crews worked on the simulator of the Soyuz MS manned transport spacecraft.

Let us remind that astronauts learn about contingencies and emergencies to be overcome only during the exam. They do not know in advance what exactly is included in the received ticket. Nevertheless, the first stage of training has already shown that both ISS-65 crews have excellent skills and deserve high marks.

At the second stage, the ISS-65 backup crew consisting of Roscosmos cosmonauts Anton Shkaplerov, Oleg Artemiev and NASA astronaut Anne McClain had to solve a number of problems during the "flight" on the Soyuz MS spacecraft. Their examination card included: a false alarm in the life support system at the stage of excretion; failure in the orientation loop - loss of orientation of the ship during the docking phase, which required manual docking. In addition, the cosmonauts and astronauts faced a failure of the docking system sensor and depressurization of the propulsion system pneumatic system, failure to start the urgent descent program and transition to the backup circuit, respectively, as well as the lack of engine shutdown when the braking impulse was applied.

The main crew of ISS-65, consisting of Roscosmos cosmonauts Oleg Novitsky, Pyotr Dubrov and NASA astronaut Mark Vande Hai, who worked on the Russian segment, got the following situations: replacement of a tank on a sewage and sanitary device; failure of the electrolysis vacuum valve of hydrogen on the "Electron" system; communication failure with the US segment of the ISS; overheating of the cartridge in the micro-impurity block system. In addition, the crew had to cope with an emergency - a fire in the MIM-2 module.

Both crews received excellent marks. On Wednesday, March 24, a meeting of the Interdepartmental Commission to assess their readiness for space flight will take place. On the same day, at 11:00 Moscow time, a pre-flight online video conference will begin with the participation of the ISS-65 prime and backup crews. Astronauts and astronauts will answer questions from journalists and social media users. The event was organized by the TASS news agency in cooperation with the Roscosmos State Corporation and the Cosmonaut Training Center.

Recall that the launch of the Soyuz MS-18 manned transport vehicle with the ISS-65 crew is scheduled for April 9, 2021 from the Baikonur cosmodrome.

Soyuz MS-18 named after Yuri Gagarin

03/23/2021 16:30

The Soyuz MS-18 manned transport spacecraft, which is currently undergoing prelaunch training under the program for the delivery of members of the 65th main expedition to the International Space Station, received its own name “Yu.A. Gagarin ".

In accordance with the work schedule, the launch of the Soyuz-2.1a launch vehicle with the Soyuz MS-18 manned spacecraft is scheduled for April 9, 2021, three days before the 60th anniversary of the first manned flight into space. According to the established tradition, the space mission closest to this significant date is dedicated to the first cosmonaut of the planet Yuri Alekseevich Gagarin, whose name already adorns the surface of the screen-vacuum thermal insulation of the ship's household compartment. In addition, the official symbols of the celebration of the 60th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's flight in space will be placed on the launch vehicle's nose cone.

The previous launch of the Yuri Gagarin spacecraft of the Soyuz-TMA series, which took place on April 5, 2011, was timed to coincide with the half-century anniversary of the beginning of the practical development of manned astronautics.

Flight engineers Pyotr Dubrov and Mark Vande Hai worked out the extravehicular activity program for the 66th expedition too.

Does this mean that Vande Hei will make a Russian EVA ?

No schedule such EVA according to press conference from today.

About 10 spacewalks will be performed by astronauts of the new ISS expedition.
Oleg Novitsky said he would take part in three of them, and Pyotr Dubrov said he would perform up to seven spacewalks, "if everything goes according to plan".

MOSCOW, March 24. /TASS/. About 10 spacewalks will be performed by cosmonauts of the new ISS expedition.
Oleg Novitsky said that he will take part in three of them, and Peter Dubrov said that he would perform up to seven spacewalks, "if everything goes according to plan".

About 10 spacewalks from the International Space Station (ISS) will be held by Russian cosmonauts of the new expedition. Oleg Novitsky, commander of the Soyuz MS-18 spacecraft, said this on Wednesday at a pre-flight online conference in TASS.

"We have an extensive program of extravehicular activities - 10 spacewalks. I will be lucky to work in three of them," he said.

In turn, cosmonaut Petr Dubrov noted that he will perform up to seven spacewalks, "if everything goes according to plan."

Previously, Vladimir Solovyov, head of space flight of the Russian segment of the ISS, said in an interview with channel "Russia-24" that a multifunctional laboratory module "Science" will be launched into orbit in the summer of 2021, to integrate the module with the station will require seven to eight spacewalks.

American spacesuits

In turn, Roscosmos cosmonaut Petr Dubrov said that Russian cosmonauts under current plans will perform spacewalks in Russian spacesuits.

"So far, according to current plans, we have no plans for a Russian crew member to go out in an American spacesuit and an American crew member to go out in a Russian spacesuit. Oleg Novitsky and I will work together in Russian spacesuits," he said.

Finding the crack

The commander of the Soyuz MS-18 also said that the crew of the spacecraft will not take any new tools with them to search for leaks on the station.

"No new tools are planned yet, we have everything we need on board. It's just that because of the very small size, we have to spend a lot of time searching," Novitsky said.

He expressed hope that the previous crew, which is now on the station, will successfully complete the work. "But we are ready to support our station if necessary. If we have to keep looking, we will do our best. And in turn we hope that this operation will definitely end on us, the station will work as reliably as always, "- stressed the cosmonaut.

Earlier, cosmonauts of Roscosmos Sergei Ryzhikov and Sergei Kud-Sverchkov conducted repair work on the hull of module "Zvezda", where they had previously identified a crack and a number of possible leaks. All the actions were carried out by the Russian crew members under the supervision of the Main Operations Group of the ISS Russian Segment Control and RSC Energia engineers. All the work is being coordinated with NASA specialists by the order of Roscosmos CEO Dmitry Rogozin. Later, the pressure in the intermediate chamber of the Zvezda module continued to decrease, despite the sealing of two cracks.

The launch of crewed transport spaceship Soyuz MS-18 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome is scheduled for April 9. Roscosmos cosmonauts include Novitsky and Dubrov in the main crew and Anton Shkaplerov and Oleg Artemyev in the back-up crew. The planned duration of the flight is 191 days. March 10 Roscosmos reported that cosmonaut Sergei Korsakov was withdrawn from the main crew of crewed spacecraft "Soyuz MS-18," and NASA astronaut Marc Vande Hi was appointed instead. NASA astronaut Anne McClain was appointed to replace Dmitry Petelin in the back-up crew.

ISS-65 crews answered questions from journalists and social media users

03.24.2021 19:22

A pre-flight press conference of the main and backup crews of the ISS-65 Expedition took place at the Cosmonaut Training Center. Journalists, as well as users of social networks, sent questions in advance. Restrictive sanitary measures still do not allow to invite media representatives to the CPC for direct communication with cosmonauts and astronauts. The press conference was broadcast online on the Internet sites of its organizers: TASS, the State Corporation "Roscosmos" and the Cosmonaut Training Center. Yu.A. Gagarin.

The ISS-65 prime crew consisting of Roscosmos cosmonauts Oleg Novitsky, Pyotr Dubrov and NASA astronaut Mark Vande Haya is to set off on a space expedition on April 9, 2021 - just a few days before the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the first manned flight into space. Of course, the theme of the landmark anniversary was touched upon during the press conference.

Oleg Novitsky noted that April 12, most likely, will be a busy working day for his crew, since the flight program is very busy. At the same time, he emphasized that it was largely thanks to Yuri Gagarin, who proved the possibility of man's stay in space, that he and his colleagues have the opportunity to do what they love outside of earthly space. Cosmonaut Pyotr Dubrov called the planet's first cosmonaut a guiding star. NASA astronaut Anne McClain, who was preparing for the flight as part of the backup crew, noted the atmosphere of cooperation that prevails at the Cosmonaut Training Center.

“The Russian space program was born here, it's just an incredible place. The American and Russian programs could probably be implemented separately, but we are not competing as we did 60 years ago. We collaborate and work together, ”said Anne McClain .
Roscosmos cosmonauts Anton Shkaplerov and Oleg Artemiev, who, together with Anne McClain, are part of the backup crew, also eagerly answered questions from journalists and social media users. Since they all already have experience in space expeditions, for example, they were quite able to tell what the cosmonauts are doing in the last hours before the flight and speculate about when the dreams of science fiction writers about flights into deep space will come true.

The main crew was often asked questions related to the flight program. A special feature of the 65th expedition should be work on the integration of the "Science" module with the International Space Station, which is planned to be launched into orbit this summer. The astronauts were asked how many space walks they would have to perform, whether they were counting on the help of their American crew colleague.

Some of the questions addressed to the crew were of a medical nature: are they vaccinated against coronavirus, are they planning to take vitamins during the flight, who will help them in orbit in case of ailments. Traditionally, many were interested in how they spend their free time on board the ISS, what dishes of the space menu are preferred by cosmonauts and astronauts, how often they are allowed to communicate with relatives.

Oleg Novitsky also answered the question that is always asked during the pre-flight press conference: what item will become an indicator of zero gravity for the crew. According to Novitsky, it will be a kitten named Woof. When the crew commander explained the reason for the choice of the indicator, all the participants in the event were moved.

ISS-65 crews supported long-term pre-flight traditions

03/25/2021 14:15

Preparing for the next expedition, the new crews of the International Space Station traditionally visit iconic places associated with the history of Russian cosmonautics. The event is held literally a few days before their departure to Baikonur.

In the museum of the Cosmonaut Training Center, where the memorial office of Yuri Gagarin is located, the crews of the long-term expedition ISS-65 left their autographs in the commemorative book of prelaunch entries. The decision to create a book with appeals from the participants of the upcoming expeditions was made after the tragic death of the first cosmonaut of the planet.

Each crew has a group photo from the International Space Flight Museum. The ISS-65 prime crew, consisting of Roscosmos cosmonauts Oleg Novitsky, Pyotr Dubrov and NASA astronaut Mark Vande Haya, as well as their stand-ins Anton Shkaplerov, Oleg Artemiev and Anne McClain, did not deviate from tradition.

Then the delegation of cosmonauts and astronauts went to the Kremlin wall to honor the memory of S.P. Koroleva, Yu.A. Gagarin and other outstanding people who contributed to the development of astronautics. It became a tradition to visit the territory of the Kremlin, as well as a walk along Red Square, after which the cosmonauts visited the house-museum of S.P. Korolev in Moscow.

On March 26, 2021, the crews are to leave for the Baikonur cosmodrome. The launch of the Soyuz MS-18 manned transport vehicle is scheduled for April 9.

Vein, Eye Scans on Station as Next Crew Nears Launch

Mark Garcia Posted on March 25, 2021

The Expedition 64 crew continued researching how microgravity affects biology aboard the International Space Station today. The orbital residents also conducted vein and eye checks and prepared for three new crew members due in early April.

NASA Flight Engineer Shannon Walker joined Russian cosmonauts Sergey Ryzhikov and Sergey Kud-Sverchkov for vein and eye scans on Thursday. Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Soichi Noguchi led the effort scanning veins in the trio’s neck, clavicle and shoulder areas using the Ultrasound 2 device in the morning. In the afternoon, Noguchi examined Walker’s eyes using the orbiting lab’s optical coherence tomography gear.

Walker also assisted fellow Flight Engineer Kate Rubins of NASA setting up samples of tiny worms for viewing in a microscope. Rubins captured video of the microscopic worms wriggling around to learn how microgravity affects genetic expression and muscle function. Insights from the Micro-16 study may benefit human health on and off the Earth.

Astronauts Michael Hopkins and Victor Glover focused on station maintenance throughout Thursday. Hopkins set up alternate sleep accommodations ahead of the Expedition 65 crew launch and docking set for April 9 when 10 people will be on the station until April 17. Glover serviced Water Recycling System components checking for leaks and tightening fittings on the rack located inside the Tranquility module.

Ryzhikov continued observing plasma dust crystals for the ongoing space physics study taking place in the station’s Russian segment. Kud-Sverchkov wiped down equipment inside the Zarya module then explored how pilots may operate spacecraft on future planetary missions.

Back on Earth in Moscow, three Expedition 65 crew members are getting ready to head to the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan where their Soyuz MS-18 rocket is being processed for its April 9 launch. Flight Engineers Mark Vande Hei of NASA and Pyotr Dubrov of Roscosmos will flank Soyuz Commander Oleg Novitskiy during their three-and-a-half-hour ride to their new home in space.

Just over a week later, Rubins will return to Earth with her Expedition 64 crewmates Ryzhikov and Kud-Sverchkov. They will parachute to a landing in Kazakhstan inside the Soyuz MS-17 crew ship after 185 days aboard the station.

ISS-65 crews flew to Kazakhstan

03/26/2021 11:38

At the Yu.A. Gagarin, on the morning of March 26, 2021, a ceremonial departure of cosmonauts and astronauts to Baikonur took place to continue pre-flight training. This event also has its own traditions: the crews have breakfast with colleagues, and then go to the main alley of the Center for joint photographs.

Usually, communication with the press becomes an important part of the wires to the launch site. However, sanitary restrictions designed to stop the spread of the coronavirus have not yet been lifted. Therefore, there were no media representatives at the event.

The crew members were seen off by the management and employees of the CTC, representatives of space agencies, as well as friends, relatives, and colleagues. Roscosmos cosmonauts Oleg Novitsky, Pyotr Dubrov and NASA astronaut Mark Vanda Hai, who are part of the ISS-65 prime crew, were wished good luck, high-quality performance of the assigned tasks, preservation of a warm atmosphere in the team, and upon completion of the expedition, a safe return to Earth. Warm parting words were also addressed to the backup crew. Recall that it includes Roscosmos cosmonauts Anton Shkaplerov, Oleg Artemiev, Anne McClain. They also went to Baikonur.

Pre-flight training at the cosmodrome will last until the day on which the launch is scheduled. The launch of the Soyuz MS-18 manned transport vehicle is scheduled for April 9, 2021 on the Soyuz-2.1a launch vehicle.

Crews of the Soyuz MS-18 spacecraft arrived at Baikonur

03/26/2021 14:45

On the morning of March 26, 2021, at the Yu.A. Gagarin , the ceremonial departure of the main and backup crews of the new 65th long-term expedition to the International Space Station, departing for Kazakhstan, took place. As part of the prime crew: Roscosmos cosmonauts Oleg Novitsky (commander), Pyotr Dubrov (flight engineer) and NASA astronaut Mark Vande Hai (flight engineer-2), their stand-ins are Anton Shkaplerov, Oleg Artemiev and Anne McClain, respectively.

A few hours later, they arrived at the Baikonur cosmodrome to complete prelaunch preparations. Today, cosmonauts and astronauts will be given instructions on how to work on the product of the Soyuz MS-18 manned spacecraft, as well as on checking communications during its fitting. After that, they will preliminarily prepare personal belongings for stowage aboard the Soyuz.

Over the next two weeks, the main and backup crews will have to carry out an intensive program of training, exercises and briefings, as well as medical examinations. So, on March 27, 2021, they will conduct the first "fitting" in the Soyuz MS-18 manned transport spacecraft. They will need to work out the mechanism of action on the ground, familiarize themselves with the on-board documentation and perform a series of tests of the on-board systems.

The launch of the Soyuz-2.1a carrier rocket with the Soyuz MS-18 manned spacecraft and the crew of the next long-term expedition is scheduled for April 9, 2021 from the launch pad No. 31 of the Baikonur cosmodrome.

Station Ends Week with Biology; New Crew Arrives at Launch Site

Mark Garcia Posted on March 26, 2021

The seven residents aboard the International Space Station are wrapping up an intense week of biology investigations in low-Earth orbit. Three new crew members are also two weeks away from launching to the orbiting lab and joining the Expedition 64 crew.

The station astronauts have been focusing their research efforts this week on microgravity’s long-term impacts on the human body and other biological processes. NASA Flight Engineer Kate Rubins examined space-grown protein crystals in a microscope on Friday morning for insights into pharmaceutical production beyond Earth’s gravity. She later peered at microscopic worms wriggling in unique sample slides, set up by NASA Flight Engineer Shannon Walker, to understand how weightlessness affects genetic expression in muscles.

Flight Engineers Victor Glover and Soichi Noguchi partnered together in the ongoing Time Perception study inside Europe’s Columbus laboratory module. The astronauts wear virtual reality googles and click a trackball while performing a series of exercises to understand how their spatial orientation and cognitive performance changes in microgravity.

Lab maintenance is also critical to ensure station systems such as life support and computing remain in tip-top shape. Flight Engineer Michael Hopkins worked preventative maintenance in the Tranquility module’s Water Recycling System. He also replaced electrical components inside the Human Research Facility-2 rack.

The two cosmonauts, Commander Sergey Ryzhikov and Flight Engineer Sergey Kud-Sverchkov, kept up with their contingent space research in the station’s Russian segment. Ryzhikov finalized this week’s plasma physics study closing out the experiment and stowing the advanced science gear. Kud-Sverchkov explored how the human circulatory system adapts to long-term spaceflight.

Three new Expedition 65 crew members have arrived at their launch site at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan today. Flight Engineers Mark Vande Hei of NASA and Pyotr Dubrov of Roscosmos with Soyuz MS-18 Commander Oleg Novitskiy are in final training for their April 9 launch to the space station.

The beginning of the final stage of preparation for a flight into a near-earth orbit is pre-launch training of crews at Baikonur. On Saturday, March 27, 2021, the main and backup crews of the long-term expedition ISS-65 will conduct the first "fitting" on the Soyuz MS-18 manned transport spacecraft. Its launch under the International Space Station program is scheduled for April 9 from site 31 of the cosmodrome.

First, without the Sokol KV-2 flight suits, cosmonauts and astronauts will familiarize themselves with their spacecraft, the placement of the necessary cargo in the utility compartment and the state of the systems. Then, after donning them and conducting leak tests, the crews will test the communication system and the operation of the seat cocking system, which serves to mitigate the shock load during landing. This "fitting" will take place in the assembly and testing building of site No. 254.

Recall that the day before the crews flew to the Baikonur cosmodrome. The final stage of their preparation for launch will take place here. The prime crew consists of Roscosmos cosmonauts Oleg Novitsky (third flight into orbit), Pyotr Dubrov (space debutant) and NASA astronaut Mark Vande Hai (one space flight), their back-ups: Roscosmos cosmonauts Anton Shkaplerov, Oleg Artemyev and NASA astronaut Anne McClain ...
