Artemis 1 Discussion Thread

As we gear up for Artemis 1, thought it would be good idea to have separate thread for general discussions on the mission.

Is there currently a publicly known target date for CS-1 stacking with the SRBs in the VAB?
Last I saw the forecast was around the end of May, but that was weeks ago.

Good question, that is the latest I know of as well.  I suspect we'll hear some updates in the next few weeks.

'Traveled work' and TPS repair guarantees that CS-1 stacking moves into June.

That's pretty significant, good find.  NASA must be gaining confidence on integrating the entire stack.

It says November on my screen...

BTW, that launch schedule is packed
Antares - 1 flight
SLS - 1 flight
Atlas - 5 flights
Falcon - 4 flights
Electron - 1 flight
Ariane - 1 flight

All in about 6 months.

I think that you meant that PM3 meant October ...  ;)

edit: with JWST still being listed for a Oct 31 launch, who knows ...

So, that page behaves kind of strange. When I change my timezone to Berlin, it says October. When I change my timezone back to PST, it says November. Using a German proxy server has no bearing. Microsoft Edge vs Google Chrome has no bearing either. And it gets stranger, using UTC +01:00 West Central Africa shows November while UTC +01:00 Belgrade, Bratislava, Budapest, Llubljana, Prague shows October despite being on the same UTC offset. Casablanca also shows November. Beirut time says October, while 300 miles away in on Cairo time says November (again, despite being on the same UTC +02:00 offset). My guess is there is some sort of internal date/time that then gets set to different levels of precision, but this internal date/time is being time zone adjusted and the month is moving around. Why Beirut is different than Cairo? Possibly something to do with Beirut changing their clocks in March and October while Cairo doesn't use a daylight savings time system (having abolished it several years ago).

The flight packing is a little more crowded than you indicate.

Just tracking the launches from LC-39A in Oct-Nov timeframe. There is a DOD FH launch and Crew 3 Launch. There can also be up to as many as 3 others off of LC-39A as well in just those 2 months. The other pads are not as much of a concern.

Nice video. The solar array positioning will be a lot more intricate that I imagined.

Presuming Artemis uses a ”barbecue mode” thermal control roll program, those motors will get quite a workout…

I think it will be facing aft first toward the Sun for most of the mission so I don't think they need to rotate much during that time

Agreed, what we saw in the video is over the course of the entire 26+ day mission.

A bad assumption.  Just because Apollo did it doesn't mean Orion will do it.  How many other spacecraft do you hear about  ”barbecue mode”?
