L2 Student Scholarship Program 2018
« on: 07/29/2018 09:54 pm »
Four years ago we started offering students in the fields we cover 50 percent off L2 terms, a student discount. This is still in effect:
https://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=37300.0

However, the discount was still not enough for some students, especially at the college (teenager) level who have no disposable income (and some have no access to a credit card I've noticed), so we also ran an idea where current L2 members (or any regular member) of the site could throw in a bit of cash and that would be converted into L2 scholarships.

That was surprisingly successful, with 50 L2 scholarships taken and the majority of whom are still regulars with the site today. Amazingly, it was one of those scholarships who then became a lifetime L2 member is his own right and asked about the option to sponsor a scholarship himself!

Combined with some long-term L2 lifetime members occasionally chipping in a bit more, which I will convert into scholarships to kick this off, we can start another round.

--

Becoming a L2 scholarship sponsor:

1) If you are a current L2 member (or otherwise) and want to sponsor a student, you can do so at the discounted rate. The scholarships are a 12 month term, but discounted at the student rate, so each $50 gets one scholarship. There's no limit to how many scholarships you sponsor, but one is amazing enough. Also, it goes without question you're again supporting the site via chipping it to cover its costs.

First, click here to enter our secure payment page. Enter the total that will cover the scholarship. Then send me a PM to say it's for a scholarship and how you would like it to appear, such as username or real name, etc. (*you can also post in this thread).

---

Applying for a L2 scholarship:

2) If you are a student interested in a L2 scholarship, please post the following post into this thread.
a) Name (doesn't have to be full name, it's just better than "Sir Rocket-A-Lot").
b) What you are studying and which college/uni.
c) How L2 access would be useful to you.

--

This will keep going for a good month or so as I'd rather people who use NSF see this rather than tweeting it and getting people who've never been on NSF taking advantage. It'll take a while to get going, per previous experience.

As we get applicants for a scholarship, I'll allocate it to the person who sponsored it. 3 (third) of 4 (fourth available scholarship), 15 of 17 and so on, like the previous thread. It'll mainly be in order, but if we get - for instance - a Canadian student applying, then we try and match that to a Canadian sponsor.

Allocating student to sponsor will take a few days at most.

Questions can be posted in this thread too.

Hi Chris.

My name is Paul.

Studying Space Engineering at GALCIT (Graduate Aerospace Laboratories of the California Institute of Technology). My registered e-mail address here will show that.

This is an awesome idea. I joined the site last year and have really enjoyed the open forum and it's assisted my studies already. I'm still learning before I post and I think L2 would REALLY help me. I would really appreciate a sponsor of a L2 membership/scholarship.

I am at the high school at the moment.

How would L2 Help me ?
I'm thinking of studying rocketsience and i think l2 with its big collections of documents could help me to decide if this is the right way for me and helps me to learn more about spaceflight.

A solarship would be great!

Greetings
Lucas

Long time reader of the site and follow you on Twitter. Got myself an account and would love L2. Don't have any notes to do anything, even Netflix, so would be great if I could get a sponsor.

Name John Edwards.
Space Science at Leicester Uni.

Hoping to get a job with Astrium UK at some point! Hanging around industry guys would be amazing.

PS Love the verification question for first post. You got to know your shuttles and I do!

Hi. I've been a member of this site for years as I got into Shuttle when I was knee high to my father who is also into space. I'm now studying and hope to get into rockets as a career!

I'm studying at Virginia Tech, Advanced Math, but could be applied to the career for sure. But I would love L2 access. My name is Mark as you may have guessed. I rebooted my e-mail address to my vt.edu addy to show as proof.

Thank you for your consideration!

Thank you for doing this! I normally read the news site and find the forum a bit daunting, but I'd love to learn more before posting and L2 would really help me learn more.

Name, Sarah.
Studying applied science, Texas A&M

Hello! A few folk pointed me to this.

My name's Joshua, though at this point most folk I interact with know me as Lupi.
I'm just starting out at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University through their Worldwide program, working towards a Bachelors in Aeronautical Sciences.

I haven't really interacted with the forum here much (I've only today created myself account), I've mostly read articles and followed you guys on Twitter, but two people I know have prompted me to give it a shot, and I suppose there's no harm in that. I'm always a fan of learning more, after all. That's how I went from having no goal when I graduated high school, to finally starting to find my way in spaceflight!

Thank you for the opportunity!
