This was on NASA TV today and I really admire the details the engineers went into talking about how the cameras are setup and the framerates.

400fps for the 16mm cameras
180fps for the 35mm engineering cameras (with part of the frame used for the timecode and camera identification)
and 28fps for the widescreen 35mm cameras (so it actually plays back slower than realtime at 24fps)

Of course NASA UHD has early RED ONE footage of one of the final launches (that would be a separate thread, and I may capture it and encode it into AV1 if there's interest) but still, to see them talk about using automatic iris control and nitrogen in the blast proofing for each camera is so intriguing.

Even the purposeful slant on the HDTV 1080i cameras to take advantage of the widescreen frame, that's something only someone working with the orbiter would think up of.

Why is this thread in the Discovery section? They mention in the film most of the engineering video is from STS-124, with less footage from STS-114 and STS-117.

Recutting this film with high dynamic range may just make the SRBs REALLY pop out and the brightness on modern 4K HDR TVs may just be able to reproduce how bright they actually were. Even on NASA UHD they're broadcasting it in SDR.

Sorry, geeking out on the details of how they setup these cameras is something I really wish I could work on one day.

This video original titled "Ascent" was released in September 2013. It's been posted somewhere in NSF I just couldn't find it.  Enjoyed seeing it again.  Thanks.

What I specifically saw on NASA TV today was this specific film, and they even pulled the YouTube autocaptions for the final broadcast version closed captioning that aired on NASA TV, so that's how I know this was the right video.

Yea, it's the same as the original broadcast in 2013. I acquired a copy of it back then and it matches the broadcast above.  The captions do help.

You are probably correct. The date I mention is when I first saw and acquired a copy.

Yes this video "Ascent" originally came out on DVD near the end of the program, but before the manifest was flown out in 2011.  It's been many years since I've seen it.  It got jumbled in with the Ascent highlight videos that NASA was doing at the time.
