NICER is going into mission continuation review this summer.

So far, on-sky requirement of 35% is exceeded and about 65%. On sky performance is 85%, 15% slewing to new targets. Going through radiation belts reduces the 85% to about 65%.

First results of NICERs primary mission to measure the diameter of 6 pulsars to 5% accuracy expected in a few weeks. Algorithms to extract this information from science data takes weeks. The process has been started one week ago and preliminary results look good so far.

NICER was also able to prove that one can use pulsars pulsars as a GPS in deep space. NICER was able to measure its position to 10km over a period of two days using pulsar signals alone. This would method work anywhere in the solar system.

This is one of my favorite photos I was lucky enough to capture from space - it's the first time @SpaceX successfully launched a recycled capsule! Reusability and capitalizing on natural resources will be imperative to build a thriving and diverse lunar economy.

Look carefully towards bottom left of the photo

Edit: I’m sorry, yes I meant left …

NASA’s NICER Finds X-ray Boosts in the Crab Pulsar’s Radio Bursts
A global science collaboration using data from NASA’s Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) telescope on the International Space Station has discovered X-ray surges accompanying radio bursts from the pulsar in the Crab Nebula. The finding shows that these bursts, called giant radio pulses, release far more energy than previously suspected.

NICER is still providing interesting science. Is the instrument still active?
