With Astra 2G grounded for several weeks due to problems with the Briz-M, will Yamal-401 take over as the prestige passenger of the 400th Proton? Sources are currently disagreeing with that: http://oborona.gov.ru/news/view/1456 (http://oborona.gov.ru/news/view/1456) says yes (i.e. Yamal-401 staying on Dec. 12 and Astra 2G NET late Dec.); http://www.vesti.ru/doc.html?id=2152811 (http://www.vesti.ru/doc.html?id=2152811) and this:
Peter B. de Selding @pbdes
On Proton manifest, Gazprom's Yamal 401 was to be next, mid-Dec, then Inmarsat 5F2/Global Xpress in late Jan, a sched likely to be scrapped.
says no (both slipping due to possible commodity problems)
We shall see what happens.... ;)

At Baikonur the next stage of preparation for the upcoming launch of the carrier rocket "Proton-M" with the upper stage "Breeze-M" and the Russian telecommunications spacecraft (SC) "Yamal-401".
Preparation spacecraft "Yamal-401" to launch carried out by specialists of "Information Satellite Systems" Academician M.F.Reshetnёva. " At an early stage in the assembly building site 92A-50 were conducted final stages of preparation of the carrier rocket "Proton-M" for docking with the space head part (SHM). Today we have completed the preparation of the AU to the general assembly with the carrier rocket "Proton-M". Also, experts finalized verification work carried out and the spacecraft fairing knurling. However, the staff of the FSUE "TsENKI - Space Center" South "is prepared launch pad 81 to receive ILV" Proton-M ", which will orbit" Yamal-401 ".
Previous launch rocket "Proton-M" was held October 22, 2014. As a result, was successfully launched into orbit Russian telecommunications spacecraft "Express-AM6."
Launch of "Proton-M" with the spacecraft "Yamal-401" is scheduled for December 16.
The new satellite orbital group of the Russian satellite operator "Gazprom Space Systems" is designed to provide relaying communications and broadcasting in Europe and Asia in a continuous mode. The satellite transponder 53 and six antennas operating in C- and Ku-band frequencies.

Yesterday at the Baikonur Cosmodrome State Commission has decided to roll out the launch vehicle (ILV) "Proton-M" with the upper stage "Breeze-M" and the spacecraft "Yamal-401" to the launch pad.
In accordance with the decision of the State Commission this morning ILV "Proton-M" was delivered to the launch site and installed on the launcher.
After supplying the rocket service tower and connecting communications specialists Khrunichev. Khrunichev and enterprises Roscosmos began work on the first day of the schedule.
Launch of spacecraft "Yamal-401" is scheduled for December 15th. This will be the seventh space launch, carried out in 2014 with the help of the carrier rocket "Proton", and 400th start in year history of the media (1965).

"Tonight, we dine in hydrazine!" (C) :P
Yes, 400 Protons is much cooler than 300 Spartans. Somehow, even with all its problems from 1965 till 2014, the thought that a rocket of the size of the Saturn IB is still in active duty after 400 flights in basically the same configuration (yes I know the number of incremental upgrades is huge) is......astonishing. Given its extremely chequered early history (9 failures in 11 launches 1969.1-1970.2 - had this been the Saturn IB/Titan III there would be zero chance that it would have survived this feat), it's amazing to see the Proton having a chance of actually getting to 500 flights before retirement.

What's most amazing to me about Proton is it's pioneering use of staged combustion hypergolic propellant engines, even more impressive than the Soviet Union's development of hydrocarbon SC engines. The latter were challenging enough to develop, but hypergols are in a class of their own using very highly reactive and corrosive propellents. No one else I'm aware of has attempted the design of such engines, far less attempt the development of F-1 class engines using the same SC cycle and propellants (RD-270)

Yamal-401 | Second Burn
December 14, 2014 8:50 pm (GMT)
ILS Communications Team
As the Breeze M upper stage of our Proton M rocket continues its climb into space with the Yamal-401 satellite onboard, we have received confirmation that the 2nd burn of the upper stage occurred and shut down as scheduled.
The next events are scheduled for about 2 hours from now. The Breeze M upper stage will ignite for a 3rd time and burn for approximately 18 minutes; after that the additional propellant tank will be jettisoned. All this will happen in a span of almost 20 minutes while the vehicle is again out of range of a ground station. We should reacquire the vehicle shortly after the APT is jettisoned.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjSwbGnPMmo
Wow, I think this the first time I've seen 2nd stage sep./3rd stage ignition from Baikonur! (easy to see down-range, but not from the launch site)
Briz-M's 3rd burn should be completed by now and external fuel tank jettison should happen very soon. We will know very shortly when it comes back into ground station coverage. ;)
-
Briz-M's 3rd burn and APT jettison completed without issues. 4th and last burn starts at 09:03 UTC.
-
http://sen.com/news/yamal-401-launch-on-proton
04:10 UTC
Ground control confirmed that the third engine firing and the separation of the external tank had actually took place.
04:15 UTC
The telemetry accumulated onboard Briz-M during the flight out of range of ground stations and later downlinked to mission control indicates that the third engine cutoff and the jettisoning of the external tank took place 11 seconds ahead of schedule. (It is not an indication of a serious problem).
-
All first three Briz-M firings were a little shorter than planned:
1st burn: -5s
2nd burn: -14s
3rd burn: -11s
APT was jettisonned 11s early
(should not represent an issue at this stage)
-
What seems to be the Briz-M auxiliary tank (APT) has been catalogued by USSTRATCOM:

why bother, the launch stream died. Better to watch other sources.

No TLEs yet for the spacecraft.
However according to NK forum on January 1, Yamal-401 was in GEO with excentricity 0.0001 and longitude was 89.92°E

Looks like NORAD finally tracks the satellite and the Briz-M today - currently the satellite TLE is issued under 40347/2014-082C although I guess it will be swapped later on. ::)
