The news site style sidebar importantly allows additional revenue opportunities for the site, although you will notice we mostly use it for supporting our team members, including the rolling twitter feed (which is very useful) and only a few actual ads.

Personally i don't mind the ads, as long they are static. When they start to blink like in a discotheque i tend to block them. With that said I'm pretty sure i would not like the rolling twitter feed on the side, these sorts of things are really distracting. So if you go with them, please make it so it is easy to block them without also blocking the ads.
