I think it is better to keep this "news" out of the news, becouse of privacy of the astronaut...

They collapse all the time.   It is like sensationalism.  Just like reporting evrytime a movie star trips

Hardly privacy if it happened at a public event.

And the media or general public might not know they collapse all the time. I certainly didnt realise that sometimes that happens when you're getting used to gravity again. So, it was an interesting story for me. Thanks.

That's why they started use the CTV on the runway.
1.  It is easier to take off a long duration crew member from the shuttle (they don't have to go down the stairs)  The ground crew is trained to remove a incapaciated crew member
2.  It provides privacy

If a crew or crew member doesn't do the walk around after a landing, guess what happened?

She did appears to me rather tired looking during the press conference. I hope she feel better now.

Yep, Heidi collapsed, as her face is seen on the Yahoo news section.

What the linked article and others fail to mention is that she walked onto the stage at the end of the event and waved to the crowd. JSC director Mike Coats said that Stefanyshyn-Piper had felt well enough to want to come out and sign autographs, but they persuaded her not to...

But I guess it makes for a better story to leave it with that she wasn't taken to the hospital. :(

I first saw this on Yahoo and they gave no context as to how often this happens to returning crews and such, so it seemed for more serious than it apparently is.  Hopefully she'll be better in a few days.

It shows that spaceflight is not easy. Hope she is ok. This only after 1.5 weeks, just think about a 6 month trip to mars. I know it's lower gravity then earth, but it will be hard to adjust from zero 'g' to mars 'g'.

This is the first time I have ever heard about it happening. It was completely logical when I heard about it though.  It sounded like she was ok which is of course a good thing.

I imagine the crew to Mars will spend time each day exercising to mitigate this.

STS-115 scheduled two hours exercise per day for EACH crew member.

Doesn't matter though - as this shows, getting used to 1G is quite a task.

This happens fairly frequently and is always different for every astronaut.  Some never experience any problem and once back on Earth, it's like they never left.  As someone else mentioned, that is why they have the crew transport vehicle (the bus-looking thing that hydraulically lifts up and "docks" to the orbiter).  There have been several instances of someone from the crew getting sick in the ship or the transport.  It happens.

I didn't realize the shuttle astronauts got that much exercise.  I had seen one of the Expedition 12 crewmembers on a talk show saying he had less trouble re-acclimating than he did on previous flights because of his exercise regiment.

I've heard some variants on this as well. For example, there was one astronaunt who had no problems after a few months in space - Came back to Earth and was fine. A few months later he woke up in the middle of the night and tried to 'float' out of bed. Apprently, the crash of him and the beside cabinet was quote something!

This sort of physical stuff has interesting space tourism implications. People aren't going to be able to spend a couple of weeks in zero G and then just return to normal life straight away. This suggests that driving straight after the trip would probably be a bad idea for instance.

all the more reasons to start experimenting on artificial-G contraptions, let's spin the spacecrafts !
