Thanks - I was aware of the cryo issue, I thought he was referring to something specific to today's attempt that was hard on the TPS.

So did I read this right that they have the "Safe Haven" option now where they can stay at the station and have the shuttle attempt to land unmanned if there are fears of Columbia-like damage?  I would assume if they try that it will be a EAFB landing and NOT KSC, most of the entry profile for Edwards is over ocean, easy to ditch it if it cant be saved.

I had thought of something like that right after Columbia, my idea was a bit more "out there".  I thought they could send up Atlantis, do REPAIRS on the damaged shuttle and then let it do a unmanned landing attempt at EAFB.  Much better chance of saving the vehicle and the crew of the damaged shuttle can come home on the rescue shuttle (assumes ITS not damaged as well).

Anyone else counting the days till the ET is retired?
